Whether you're into hiking, swimming, camping, or just enjoying nature, these state parks offer incredible outdoor adventures—all within a short drive from the city. From cascading waterfalls to hidden caves, scenic rivers, and lush forests, this video will guide you through the must-visit state parks near Austin, Texas!
Just outside Austin’s city limits, McKinney Falls State Park is one of the easiest escapes into nature. This park is home to Upper Falls and Lower Falls, where you can swim, fish, or simply admire the rushing water. The hiking trails here are easy, making it a great place for a relaxing nature walk. Don't miss the 500-year-old bald cypress tree or the unique grotto! McKinney Falls is perfect for a quick day trip from Austin and an easy way to enjoy the outdoors without leaving the city.
A favorite among many, Pedernales Falls State Park is where you’ll find breathtaking limestone waterfalls and turquoise pools. The main waterfall area is off-limits for swimming due to flash floods, but there is a designated swimming area further down the Pedernales River. With over 40 miles of hiking trails, this park is great for those who want to explore the beauty of the Texas Hill Country. If you love hiking near Austin, this is a must-visit!
Palmetto State Park is where you'll feel like you've stepped into a tropical jungle. The park gets its name from the dwarf palmetto trees that fill the area, creating a unique swamp-like landscape. There are easy walking trails, scenic boardwalks, and access to the San Marcos River. It's the perfect park for birdwatching, kayaking, or a quiet getaway from the city.
Located near Lockhart, the BBQ capital of Texas, Lockhart State Park is a small but peaceful escape. While the park only has 3 miles of hiking trails, it's known for its historic golf course. If you’re looking for a quiet place to enjoy nature or a scenic round of golf, this is a great stop!
Buescher & Bastrop State Park are two parks that sit side by side and offer a mix of hiking, biking, fishing, and paddling. Together, they have 16 miles of hiking trails, as well as mountain biking routes. The 12-mile Park Road 1C is a favorite for cyclists looking for a scenic, paved ride through the Lost Pines Forest. If you love outdoor adventures near Austin, Buescher and Bastrop are fantastic choices!
If you're looking for the best Texas state parks for swimming, Blanco State Park is a top pick. Located along the Blanco River, it offers natural swimming areas, fishing spots, and kayaking opportunities. It's especially popular in the summer, but be sure to check for water levels, as droughts can sometimes affect swimming conditions.
A little over an hour from Austin, Enchanted Rock is one of the best hiking destinations in Texas. The massive pink granite dome is a challenge to hike but rewards you with stunning panoramic views of the Texas Hill Country. If you're up for a bit of an adventure, this is a bucket-list hike!
If you're looking for a way to escape the Texas heat, Longhorn Cavern State Park is the perfect destination. This underground cave system is rich in history and geological formations. Guided tours take you through the cavern, explaining its unique formations and past uses. It’s one of the most fascinating Texas state parks to visit in summer!
Just down the road from Longhorn Caverns, Inks Lake State Park is one of the best places for swimming, kayaking, and camping near Austin. The Devil’s Waterhole is a popular swimming spot, offering deep, refreshing water surrounded by rocky cliffs. Inks Lake is also dog-friendly, so it's a great place to bring your pup for an adventure!

Bastrop State Park - Texas State Park 15/89
Today we travel to Bastrop, TX! This is where Lydia went to school and is the closest thing to being her hometown state park. It was a tough day because we both were here when the Bastrop Complex Fire raged through and we knew and loved the area before it burned. While sad to still see the burned-out areas, the returning pines are a beauty to behold. Come with us for a walk through Bastrop State Park and learn about the Bastrop Complex Fire that changed this area forever.

A trip to Bastrop, Texas (downtown restaurants and live music)
Bastrop is a small town about 30 miles from Austin. It's got a nice strip of restaurants and breweries and places featuring live music. It's part of Central Texas and has a bit more of a conservative vibe. People shoot guns and they eat meat and they sometimes eat meat that they shot with their guns. They call themselves hip, not weird. The downtown area has a number of popular places for music, including Copper Shot Distillery, 602 Brewing Company, Bastrop Beer Company, and Neighbors Kitchen & Yard. Neighbors is known for great food and it overlooks the Colorado river. The Bastrop 1832 Farmers Market was happening on this Saturday and just across the way was the Bastrop Art Fest at the Lost Pines Art Center (every first Saturday). I had a gig up the road a bit at the Loebau Store, where they noted that many folks were away because it was the first day of hunting season. The Astros also won the world series. Good times.

Texas. Bastrop is an amazing place for camping as
they have 2 state park near by, 2 LCRA parks and
