Salvador Brazil | Historic Old Town & Sao Francisco Church | Pelourinho

Our first stop on South America was in Brazil or Brasil! After an Atlantic crossing, our World Cruise stopped at Salvador, Brazil, also known as Salvador de Bahia since it is the capital of the Bahia region of Brazil and the first capital of the entire country. We visited it's gorgeous historic old town, the Pelourinho neighbourhood with cobbled streets and bright colonial buildings. We stepped inside the incredible gold covered Church of San Francisco or Sao Francisco. The church boasts over 800 kilograms of gold throughout its decorations. Salvador is known for its African and Brazilian culture with some European influence and is known as the home of the samba. Founded in 1549, the Pelourinho neighbourhood is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We also visited the lighthouse for a photo stop and the Mercado Modelo market for shopping. I was excited for this first visit to and first stop in Brazil!

Top 05 Beaches - Alagoas - Brazil

Hello and welcome to Discovering Brazil, the channel that brings you the best travel tips and hidden gems of this amazing country. Today, we're going to explore the top 5 beaches of Alagoas, a northeastern state known for its warm waters, coral reefs, and coconut trees. Get ready to dive into paradise!

Beach 1: Praia do Francês
Our first stop is Praia do Francês, a crescent-shaped beach surrounded by cliffs and white sand dunes. This beach is perfect for surfing, kite surfing, and stand-up paddleboarding, as well as sunbathing and swimming. Did you know that in 1989, a French treasure hunter named Jean L'Herminier found a shipwreck off the coast of Praia do Francês that contained gold, silver, and jewelry from the 17th century? The treasure is estimated to be worth millions of dollars, but its whereabouts remain a mystery.

Beach 2: Praia do Gunga
Next, we have Praia do Gunga, a secluded beach located on a private property that offers breathtaking views of the sea and the mountains. To access the beach, you can take a buggy ride through the coconut groves or a catamaran tour on the lagoon. Fun fact: Praia do Gunga was used as a filming location for the Brazilian TV series The Clone and the Hollywood movie Turistas, which portrayed the beauty and diversity of the Brazilian coast.

Beach 3: Praia de Maragogi
Moving on, we arrive at Praia de Maragogi, also known as the Caribbean of Brazil due to its crystal-clear waters and colorful reefs. This beach is a paradise for snorkeling, scuba diving, and boat trips to the natural pools formed by the low tide. Did you know that in 2016, a humpback whale and her calf were spotted off the coast of Praia de Maragogi, attracting tourists and locals who witnessed their majestic beauty and playful behavior?

Beach 4: Praia do Patacho
Our fourth beach is Praia do Patacho, a hidden gem that remains unspoiled and peaceful despite its natural beauty. This beach has soft sand, turquoise waters, and coconut palms that sway in the breeze. A curious fact about Praia do Patacho is that it was chosen as the cover of the album Ainda Há Tempo by the Brazilian rapper Criolo, who wanted to pay homage to the simplicity and authenticity of the local culture.

Beach 5: Praia de São Miguel dos Milagres
Last but not least, we have Praia de São Miguel dos Milagres, a charming fishing village that boasts one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil. This beach has calm and warm waters, as well as coral gardens and mangroves that provide a habitat for sea turtles and dolphins. A fascinating fact about Praia de São Miguel dos Milagres is that it has a natural phenomenon called the Piscina do Amor (Love Pool), which is a heart-shaped pool of water formed by the rocks and the tide.

So there you have it, the top 5 beaches of Alagoas, each with its own personality and history. Which one is your favorite? Let us know in the comments below, and don't forget to subscribe to Discovering Brazil for more travel adventures, hit the like button, and turn on the notification bell to stay updated. Visiting Salvador Brazil? The Brazilian city of Salvador is one of the best cities to visit in Brazil. There's plenty to see and do in Salvador, making it one of the great cities for tourists in South America.

The most recognizable of all Salvador tourist attractions would be both the Lacerda Elevator, which transports people between the lower and upper towns, and the historic center of Salvador.

Also known as the Pelourinho, the historic center of Salvador is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the most famous part of Salvador having been the first colonial capital in Brazil. Its colorful houses, shops and numerous religious buildings of note are a just some of the sights tourists will take in here.

Most of the main sights of Salvador are within easy walking distance of each other so the city is relatively easy to get around on foot to enjoy.

Beautiful places to go in Salvador include Port da Barra beach and surrounds which are another great sight-seeing point-of-interest. Tourists can walk the numerous beaches in the area or take in a number of old fortifications that dot the coast-line - they stretch for miles with the Morre do Cristo and its statue of Jesus marking one of the Southern points of the city.

When in Salvador you should definitely visit the Mercado Modelo, the market has a wonderful history, although ravaged by fire on numerous occasions the current market houses an amazing array of craft and artisan shops - it also lies right next to the ocean and popular tourist area in the city.

Amazing views in Salvador include Rio Branco Palace and the striking Cruz Caida which offers some of the very best views of the city and surf below! the fallen cross monument or sculpture marking the place where a prominent Cathedral once stood.

And all of that is leaving out the plethora of notable churches and cathedrals that exist within the city - a couple of note being the Basilica do Senhor do Bonfim and the Sao Francisco Church and Convent, alongside a number of highly reviewed museums.

Rio de Janeiro never fails to impress us with its modern outlook that reflects its progression through the times of yore. The historic sites, sparkling beaches, green belts, and cheerful attitude of the locals attract tourists where heaven meets earth.

Rio de Janeiro lives up to its pet name as the ‘marvelous city’ with its white beaches, towering mountains, and scenic docks.

It is the second-largest city in Brazil and the state capital of Rio de Janeiro. The bustling city is best known for its sandy beaches, concerts, carnivals, football matches, music, and its well-preserved lush tropical forests.

This incredible city has thousands of entertainment options for tourists who visit Rio. Its amazing landmarks and diverse culture make it a must-visit place. It has something to offer to people of all ages, so come and have a blast.

If Ronaldo played football at the Maracanã stadium, then Christ the Redeemer put Rio on the world map.

Rio's carnival, with its energetic samba dancers jiggling their hips, attracts thousands of tourists from around the world.

Rio de Janeiro has always enjoyed the glamour of stardust sprinkled over its traditional cabaret shows, samba dance, and concerts.

A trip to Rio de Janeiro is incomplete without experiencing the shimmer and jiggle of brilliant samba dancers, where shows of a modern or classical edge can be equally enjoyed. However, along with the exciting music and dance carnival, it may be a simple theatre night at one of Rio's numerous locations that will take your fancy.

The city also has several football stadiums to enjoy the sport of die-hard football enthusiasts.
