Hello Friends, पुराणों और किंवदंतियों के अनुसार इस शहर का नाम पहले जबालिपुरम् था, क्योंकि इसका सम्बंध महर्षि जबालि से जोड़ा जाता है। जिनके बारे में कहा जाता है कि वह यहीं निवास करते थे। 1781 के बाद ही मराठों के मुख्यालय के रूप में चुने जाने पर इस नगर की सत्ता बढ़ी, बाद में यह सागर और नर्मदा क्षेत्रों के ब्रिटिश कमीशन का मुख्यालय बन गया। यहाँ 1864 में नगरपालिका का गठन हुआ था।
एक पहाड़ी पर मदन महल का किला स्थित है, जो लगभग 1100 ई. में राजा मदन सिंह द्वारा बनवाया गया एक पुराना गोंड किला है जिसका निर्माण सामरिक उद्देश्य से किया गया था. इसमें आवासीय व्यवस्था नहीं थी । इसके ठीक पश्चिम में गढ़ है, जो 14वीं शताब्दी के चार स्वतंत्र गोंड राज्यों का प्रमुख नगर था। भेड़ाघाट, ग्वारीघाट और जबलपुर से प्राप्त जीवाश्मों से संकेत मिलता है कि यह प्रागैतिहासिक काल के पुरापाषाण युग के मनुष्य का निवास स्थान था। मदन महल, नगर में स्थित कई ताल और गोंड राजाओं द्वारा बनवाए गए कई मंदिर इस स्थान की प्राचीन महिमा की जानकारी देते हैं। इस क्षेत्र में कई बौद्ध, हिन्दू और जैन भग्नावशेष भी हैं। कहते है कि जबलपुर में स्थित ५२ प्राचीन ताल तलेैयों ने यहाँ की पहचान को बढाया, इनमें से अब कुछ ही तालाब शेष बचे हैं
