TOP 3 PLACES TO GO IN BANGKOK

Planning a trip to Bangkok, Thailand? Don't miss these 3 must-do activities, including visiting The Grand Palace, the Golden Mount, and Chinatown! Get ready for an unforgettable experience in this vibrant city.

The Grand Palace (Phra Borom Maharatchawang) is a former royal residence in Bangkok that was consecrated in 1782. Today, it’s only used on ceremonial occasions, but it remains the city's biggest tourist attraction and a pilgrimage destination for devout Buddhists. The Emerald Buddha. Attached to the temple complex is the Grand Palace, the former royal residence, once a sealed city of intricate ritual and social stratification. Today it's Bangkok’s biggest tourist attraction and a pilgrimage destination for devout Buddhists.

You should tackle the brisk ascent to the Golden Mount. Serpentine steps wind through an artificial hill shaded by gnarled trees, some of which are signed in English, and past graves and pictures of wealthy benefactors. At the peak, you'll find a breezy 360-degree view of Bangkok's most photogenic side.

Soak up the buzzing atmosphere of Chinatown

A photographer’s muse, a foodie’s dream, a shopper’s paradise and a cultural anthropologist’s fantasy – that's Bangkok's Chinatown. Packed into one of Bangkok’s oldest boroughs, the district is a riotous supernova of smoke-spewing food carts, gold-laden jewelry stores, atmospheric temples, vibrant food markets and quaint family homes.

Nonthaburi Province in Thailand

Due to its close proximity to Bangkok the city is actually considered to be a suburb of the national capital, and is more or less considered a part of Greater Bangkok - had it not been for the signposts you'd hardly notice where one ends and the other begins. Officially, however, Nonthaburi is one of the five neighboring provinces of Bangkok. Covering an area of 622.303 square kilometres and separated into 2 parts by the Chao Phraya River, Nonthaburi is administratively divided into six districts: Mueang Nonthaburi, Pak Kret, Bang Kruai, Bang Yai, Bang Bua Thong and Sai Noi.

Wat Bang Oi Chang - Built in 1761 - Nonthaburi Thailand 2023

Wat Bang Oi Chang วัดบางอ้อยช้าง is an ancient temple located on the Khlong Bangkok Noi in the area of Bang Kruai District, Nonthaburi Province, on the outskirts of Bangkok.

Its name meaning place of canes for elephants temple. The locals in this community had the duty of supplying Letha t food for the army, normally sugar-canes and other plants to the royal elephants during the Ayutthaya period. In addition, it was a place where densely grown wodier trees (Oi Chang in Thai) sprouts, hence the name Bang Oi Chang. At that time, people used the wodier tree bark for elephants. They pounded the bark until soft. The soft bark was then put over the backs of each battle elephant, beneath the howdah. It helped protect the elephant's skin from rubbing directly against the seat.

This temple is assumed to have been built in the late Ayutthaya period around 1761 by local people. During the war with Burma in the King Taksin's reign, the temple site was also used as a place to gather troops for war. Including a place for medical treatment for injured people as well as beasts of burden.

Wat Bang Oi Chang is also mentioned in Nirat Phra Pathom (นิราศพระประธม, journey to Phra Pathom Chedi), a poem by famous poet Sunthon Phu in 1842. When he traveled to Nakhon Pathom Province to pay homage to Phra Pathom Chedi and passed to this temple by boat.

The inside of the temple is full of interesting things and many other precious relics, such as the hanging (raised as on hill) Buddha’s footprint cast in bronze more than 200 years ago, the only one like this in the world. The temple museum exhibits a number of old items, including wooden cabinets for keeping Tripiṭaka scripture. Among them are cupboards that show foreign influences such as communities of Chinese people and Kāma (god of love and passion), with a portrait of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) given to the temple when he made merit at the temple, according to the village head, including items used in the daily lives of people in the past, old coins, kitchenware, war weapons, a wooden boat etc.

In addition, the principal Sukhothai Buddha statue in Māravijaya posture named Phra Si Satsada (พระศรีศาสดา), it can be considered an important Buddha statue with a long legend and history alongside Phra Phuttha Chinnarat in Phitsanulok Province and Phra Phuttha Chinnasi of Wat Bowonniwet in Bangkok. It once was almost sent to enshrine at Wat Pradu Chimphli in Bangkok's Thonburi side, but was rejected by King Mongkut (Rama IV) because it was an important Buddha statue.

Unfortunately the day I visited the museum and footprint were closed. It is still worth a visit to see.

Wat Prasat Nonthaburi - 400 Year Old Ayutthaya Style Temple - Thailand 2022

Wat Prasat Nonthaburi วัดปราสาท is considered the oldest temple in Nonthaburi. It was constructed in the Maha Uttara style, which is that both side walls have no windows in front, with a castle-shaped door decorated with stucco patterns, behind only a small light hole. Wat Prasat was built in the reign of King Prasat Thong. Wat Prasat is now over 400 years old. Inside the temple are the oldest paintings in Nonthaburi and is registered as a national historic site. In addition, inside the temple, there is also the Tripitaka Hall which holds the ancient serpent ladder and still has the largest Ta-khian tree in Thailand and is more than 1,000 years old. To the Thais it is a sacred thing that they respect and worship.

Wat Prasat was built when King Prasat Thong came to set up a pavilion to dig a canal from Wat Tai Muang (วัดท้ายเมือง) to the mouth of Bang Kruai canal (ปากคลองบางกรวย) in front of Wat Khema Phirataram (วัดเขมาภิรตาราม) and a place to mobilize troops (barracks) to prepare to fight against the Burmese in Ayutthaya.

The ordination hall was built in the late Ayutthaya period. The base of the chapel is bent like the bow of a junk boat, known as the elephant's belly (ตกท้องช้าง). Inside the hall visitors can see murals depicting Thotjataka, which have eroded over time but are still bisible after all of these years. The mural paintings are in the late Ayutthaya period. Nonthaburi craftsmen have depicted the birth of ten Buddhas, which is considered one of the oldest murals in Nonthaburi. The mural is the story of the Tathagata Jataka

Behind the hall there is a Holy Tripitaka in the middle of the water built-in 1997. It is a wooden building above the ancient holy pond in the Ayutthaya period. The villagers call it the Holy Pond of Luang Pu Tum. Inside there is a centuries-old serpent staircase on display that is well preserved.

The temple is well worth a visit for anyone interested in thai history. It is also off the tourist maps and mostly just known to the locals.
