French and English are the country's two official languages. Two of the ten regions of Cameroon - in the north-west and the south-west of the country - are primarily Anglophone, representing 17% of the country's population. The lingua franca in these areas, however, is Cameroonian Pidgin English.

The remainder of the country is primarily Francophone. , Most Cameroonians speak either French or English and a third indigenous language. Cameroon is home to 230 languages, with Fulfulde being the lingua franca in the north, and Ewondo in much of the Centre, South, and East provinces.

Cameroon has 4 differents cultural areas:
The “fan-béti” cultural area including the Regions of Centre, South and East. It is characterized by the rain forest and mostly inhabited by the beti tribe, the “bantou” people and pygmies. – the “Littoral” cultural area including the Regions of Littoral, South- East and the division of “Ocean”(head quarter, Kribi). It’s characterized by water(the atlantic ocean) and mount Cameroon(for trekking). It’s mostly inhabited by the “sawas people”. – the “Grassfield” cultural area, including the Regions of West and North-West. It’s characterized by it’s Kingdoms that are important artistic and cultural centers. It’s mostly inhabited by the “Bamileke” people, the “Bamoun” people and the anglophone community. – the “Soudano-Sahelian” cultural area, including the Regions of Adamaoua, North and Far-North. It’s characterized by the Savannah landscape, and mostly inhabited by “foulbe people”.

Cameroon Northwest region : Heavy precipitations cause river Momo to Flood, Landslide blocks roads

The Northwest Region, or North-West Region (French: Région du Nord-Ouest) is one of ten regions in Cameroon. Its regional capital is Bamenda. The Northwest Region is part of the Southern Cameroons, found in the western highlands of Cameroon. It is bordered to the southwest by the Southwest Region, to the south by the West Region, to the east by the Adamawa Region, and to the north by Nigeria. Various Ambazonian nationalist and separatist factions regard the region as being distinct as a polity from Cameroon.

In 1919, the Northwest Region became solely administered by the British Empire. In 1961, the region joined the Cameroon. Separatists from the Ambazonia administration regard both the Nord-Ouest (Northwest) and Sud-Ouest (Southwest) regions as being constituent components of their envisaged breakaway state.

Administration

The Northwest Region (known before 2008 as the Northwest Province) is the third most populated province in Cameroon. It has one major metropolitan city, Bamenda, with several other smaller towns such as Wum, Kumbo, Mbengwi, Ndop, Nkambé, Batibo, Bambui and Oshie. The province saw an increase in its population from approximately 1.2 million in 1987 to 1.8 million in 2010.[6] The population density of 99.12 people per square kilometer is higher than the national average of 22.6. The provincial urban growth rate is 7.95%, higher than the national average of 5.6%, while the rural growth rate, at 1.16%, is equal to the national rate. In 2001, according to the Statistical Provincial Services of the North-West Province, the population of the province is young, with over 62% of its residents being less than 20 years old. Therefore, the dependency rate in the province is high, particularly in the rural areas.


Like other regions in Cameroon, the Northwest Region is made up of administrative divisions. The province was created in 1972 with five divisions or departments: Bui, Donga-Mantung, Menchum, Mezam, and Momo. Today, it has seven divisions, the additions being Boyo, which was carved out of the Menchum division, and Ngo-Ketunjia or Ngoketunjia, split off from the Mezam division. Each division is further subdivided, with thirty-one total subdivisions in the Northwest Province. The basic unit of local government is the council, and there are thirty-two councils in the region.

Politics

The Northwest is a stronghold of the Social Democratic Front (SDF) which is one of the main opposition parties of Cameroon. Some Northwesterners feel completely marginalized by the government. There is also a secessionist movement, the SCNC (Southern Cameroon's National Council) whose goal is to secede from Cameroon and form a republic consisting of the English-speaking regions.[clarification needed] Much of the SCNC's influence exists in the Northwest. In 2008, the President of the Republic of Cameroon, Paul Biya, signed decrees abolishing Provinces and replacing them with Regions. The Northwest Province subsequently became the Northwest Region.

TOURISM AND CULTURE: BABUNGO NKOH IN ACTION, The Best Africa culture

Babungo is one of the four villages of Babessi Sub Division, Ngoketunjia Division of the North West Region Cameroon. It is situated on the Ring Road from Bamenda about ten kilometers (6.2 miles) from Bamunka on the high plain of Ndop which is fertile and rich in water, intensely cultivated and surrounded by a ring of hills covered with pastures, making it an ideal grazing land.

Since October 2003, Babungo Museum started to contribute to the development of the cultural values aimed at overcoming the gap between local and global, as well as between tradition and modernity. They opened up new job opportunities and possibilities for development linked to the enhancement of an important resource of the country, whilst reinforcing the conscience of a rich cultural identity opened to encounter and exchange with the cultures of the world. The museum was designed using local materials, techniques and labor thanks to an Italian architect Antonio Piva, lecturer in museography at the faculty of Architecture of the Politecnico of Milan and a UNESCO collaborator. Upon the opening of this museum to the public, it has been attracting a lot of visitors to Babungo village to see the sculptures.
The ngumba is the strongest political institution in Babungo. It represents the executive power of the traditional government, which limits the power of the fon. The elder members of the ngumba also have an important role in the burial of the fon and in the enthronement of his successor. Thus the Babungo say that the ngumba is a kingmaker and that it is the father of fons. Other customary societies with an important role in Babungo include: the samba, organized at the level of the quarter, which helps the tii ntih to regulate the life of the community.
Movement to Babungo from Bamenda is along the tarred ring road since the village is located along the stretch of the ring road through Bamunka, while movement within the village is on earth road. Vehicles move in and within the village easily.

ON THE OTHER HAND,
Mankon is a geo-historic community constituting a large part of Bamenda in Cameroon, formed as an amalgamation of about five different ethnic groups. The Mankon fondom (kingdom) represents one of the oldest monarchies of the Grass field people of the Northwest Region. The fondom is ruled by a fon (king) with rights to kinghood acquired by birth. The crowned fon is usually a designated son of the deceased king, a child who was born only during his reign.
