Don't want to go to the overly crowded Venice? Want to see a piece of Italy that's authentic? Let us show you the beautiful Veneto city of Treviso! We did say that North Italy has a lot of hidden gems and this is one of them.
A short train ride north of Venice, you have another charming town that also has the canals and also fortified walls. This medieval city has stunning, picturesque streets that most tourists never seen.
Since we live in Italy, we want to show you as much as possible as we explore this great country!
More on Treviso:
Treviso, a hidden gem in the Veneto region of Northern Italy, is a city that often slips under the radar for many travelers, yet holds a charm and a wealth of culture that can rival its more famous neighbors like Venice. Here's an engaging introduction to Treviso, tailored for someone who might not be familiar with the city or the region:
- **A City of Waterways and Medieval Walls**: Often referred to as Little Venice, Treviso is crisscrossed by a network of canals and encircled by well-preserved medieval walls. These serene canals, with their gentle flow, add to the city's picturesque and tranquil ambiance.
- **The Original Home of Prosecco**: For wine enthusiasts, Treviso is a destination of note. It's the birthplace of Prosecco, the globally beloved sparkling white wine. The surrounding hills of Treviso are dotted with vineyards producing this effervescent delight, making the city a must-visit for those looking to explore the origins of their favorite bubbly.
- **Tiramisu - A Sweet Invention**: Treviso stakes a claim to being the birthplace of Tiramisu, the world-renowned Italian dessert. This delectable treat, made from ladyfingers dipped in coffee and layered with a whipped mixture of eggs, sugar, and mascarpone cheese, dusted with cocoa, is a culinary emblem of the city.
- **Historical Treasures in Architecture**: The city boasts a range of architectural marvels from various eras, including the Romanesque-Gothic Church of San Francesco, where the tombs of Petrarch's daughter and Dante's son can be found, adding a literary angle to its historical significance.
- **The Land of Radicchio**: Treviso is renowned for its Radicchio Rosso di Treviso. This unique red lettuce is celebrated in local cuisine and is a symbol of the city's agricultural heritage. It's used in a variety of dishes, from risottos to salads, and is cherished for its slightly bitter taste and crisp texture.
- **A Haven for Cyclists and Walkers**: With its tranquil streets and scenic river paths, Treviso is a paradise for those who love to explore on foot or by bike. The city's commitment to pedestrian and cycling paths makes it an ideal place to wander without the rush and noise of heavy traffic.

Better Than Venice? North Italy's Hidden Medieval City | Treviso
VLOGMAS Day 6 | Udine | Day Trip From Aviano Air Base |
Nolan and I took the train on a day trip to Udine and had the best risotto.
Udine is a perfect day trip from Aviano Air Base and is about a 50 minute train ride from the Sacile station. We ate lunch at Trattoria Al Chianti and I had amazing pumpkin (zucca) gnocchi and a local white wine.
For dinner we ate at Osteria Ex Provinciali Udine and it was incredible. If you visit Udine you must go and order the risotto. Nolan basically licked his plate clean it was delicious.
The town is so cute especially during Christmas. I highly recommend going to the piazzas, walking up to the castle, and trying our favorite little restaurants.
Happy Vlogmas!

Italy's BEST City To Live In? 🇮🇹 North Italy's Hidden Gem | Udine
North Italy doesn't get enough love, especially the eastern side. Living in the
Friuli Venezia Giulia ourselves, we really want to share with you this hidden gem that Italy has. Don't get us wrong, we love visiting the popular cities like Rome, Milan and Venice but there is more to see in Italy. Especially if you wan to experience something more unique, authentic and without the huge tourist lines, check out Udine.
Udine, a hidden gem nestled in the northeastern part of Italy, is a city that beautifully intertwines ancient charm with modern vibrancy. Often overlooked by tourists in favor of more famous Italian destinations, Udine offers a unique and authentic Italian experience. Here's why this city is a must-visit:
- **A City Steeped in History:** Founded over a thousand years ago, Udine flaunts a rich history visible in its medieval and Renaissance architecture. The city's heart is Piazza della Libertà, acclaimed as the most beautiful Venetian square on the mainland.
- **Cultural Fusion:** Udine sits at a crossroads of Latin, Germanic, and Slavic cultures, offering a unique blend that is evident in its language, architecture, and customs. This multicultural fusion makes it a fascinating spot for cultural enthusiasts.
- **Culinary Delights:** Food in Udine is a serious affair. The city is known for its traditional Friulian cuisine, a delightful mix of Italian, Austrian, and Slavic influences. Key dishes to try include:
- *Frico*: a mouth-watering cheese and potato dish.
- *Prosciutto di San Daniele*: a world-renowned dry-cured ham.
- *Gubana*: a delicious, spiral-shaped cake filled with nuts, raisins, and grappa.
- **Wine Wonderland:** Surrounded by vineyards, Udine is a paradise for wine lovers. It's a gateway to the famous Friuli Venezia Giulia wine region, known for exceptional white wines like Friulano and Ribolla Gialla.
- **Art and Literature:** The city boasts an impressive artistic heritage. The Tiepolo Galleries, for instance, exhibit works of the famous painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. Additionally, it was the home of the poet Pasolini, adding a literary depth to its cultural tapestry.
- **Vibrant Nightlife:** Despite its historical aura, Udine has a youthful spirit, partly due to its university. The city comes alive at night with bustling bars and cafes, especially around Via Mercatovecchio.
- **Proximity to Nature:** Just a short drive from the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, Udine is perfect for those who love combining city exploration with outdoor adventures.
- **Unique Traditions:** Experience the traditional ‘Tocatì’ – a local custom where friends gather in taverns to enjoy wine, chat, and play cards.
- **Architectural Marvels:** Don't miss the Udine Castle, offering panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains.
In a nutshell, Udine is a blend of historical intrigue, culinary excellence, and natural beauty, making it an ideal destination for young travelers seeking an authentic Italian experience beyond the usual tourist trails.

Aviano: Off Duty - Episode 2
In this episode, we expose the myth that the only worthwhile thing to do in Piancavallo during the off season is to watch your toenails grow and wait for it to start snowing. SrA Caitlin Jones and SrA Melissa Hay take you to the mountain wonderland where they meet a donkey with contact dermatitis, buy a ticket for the alpine roller coaster that comes with a change of underwear, and check out a ropes course.
Back at sea level, SrA Joshua Adkins brings you the Aviano and Sacile markets in a way that only he can. He gives you the lowdown on what to expect, sharpens a knife with a bicycle, and meets the woman and fruit of his dreams.

So in our last week in Italy we stayed with the Cravers, a wonderful family who let us enjoy the 4th of July with them and we had such a great time during our stay! This is on the 4th, and we were worried that the rain was going to ruin the festivities, but Cheryl proves that all you need to do to have fun is enjoy the simple things in life, like running to touch the flower pots to see how wet you can get lol Recorded on July 4, 2010 using a Flip Video camcorder.

GOLF in Friuli Venezia Giulia (DE)
