Hey guys, welcome back to Lion on the Road, a different way to bring travels into your life. In this Vlog we gonna Explore Timor ISLAND (the Indonesian side) on the road & from the drone. Timor is an island at the southern end of Maritime Southeast Asia, north of the Timor Sea. The island is divided between the sovereign states of East Timor on the eastern part and Indonesia on the western part. The Indonesian part, also known as West Timor, constitutes part of the province of East Nusa Tenggara. Within West Timor lies an exclave of East Timor called Oecusse District.Timor and its offshore islands such as Atauro, a former place of exile increasingly known for its beaches and coral, as well as Jaco along with Wetar and the other Barat Daya Islands to the northeast constitute the Timor and Wetar deciduous forests ecoregion. The natural vegetation was tropical dry broadleaf forests with an undergrowth of shrubs and grasses supporting a rich wildlife[citation needed]. However much of the original forest has been cleared for farming,[citation needed] especially on the coasts of Timor and on the smaller islands like Atauro. Apart from one large block in the centre of Timor only patches remain.[citation needed] This ecoregion is part of the Wallacea area with a mixture of plants and animals of Asian and Australasian origin; it lies in the western part of Wallacea, in which Asian species predominate

The earliest historical record about Timor island is the 14th-century Nagarakretagama, Canto 14, that identifies Timur as an island within Majapahit's realm. Timor was incorporated into ancient Javanese, Chinese and Indian trading networks of the 14th century as an exporter of aromatic sandalwood, slaves, honey and wax, and was settled by both the Portuguese, in the end of the 16th century, and the Dutch, based in Kupang, in the mid-17th century.
As the nearest island with a European settlement at the time, Timor was the destination of William Bligh and seamen loyal to him following the infamous Mutiny on the Bounty in 1789. It was also where survivors of the wrecked HMS Pandora, sent to arrest the Bounty mutineers, landed in 1791 after that ship sank in the Great Barrier Reef.
The island has been politically divided in two parts for centuries. The Dutch and Portuguese fought for control of the island until it was divided by treaty in 1859, but they still did not formally resolve the matter of the boundary until 1912. West Timor, was known as Dutch Timor until 1949 when it became Indonesian Timor, a part of the nation of Indonesia which was formed from the old Netherlands East Indies; while East Timor was known as Portuguese Timor, a Portuguese colony until 1975. It includes the exclave of Oecussi-Ambeno in West Timor.
Kupang was an important port and trading point during the Portuguese and Dutch colonial eras. There are ruins and remnant signs of the colonial presence in the city.
Representatives of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) approached Kupang in 1613 after having conquered the Portuguese fort on Solor. At this time the place and its hinterland was governed by a raja of the Helong tribe which claimed descent from Ceram in Maluku. Kupang was well situated for strategic control over parts of Timor, since it was possible to monitor shipping activities to the south coast of the island. Moreover, the Koinino River provided fresh water for the inhabitants

Tempat wisata di Kabupaten Belu (Atambua) - Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) memiliki pesona keindahan tersendiri. Sebagai wilayah perbatasan antara Indonesia dan Timor Leste, Kabupaten Belu memiliki daya tarik wisata perbatasan, keindahan padang di dataran tinggi serta pantai yang tidak kalah menawan.Beberapa tempat wisata menarik di Atambua dan sekitarnya diantaranya adalah wisata desa perbatasan Silawan dengan pos lintas batas Motaain sebagai daya tarik utamanya. Desa Silawan juga memiliki pesona lainnya selain pos perbatasan diantaranya adalah wisata Mangrove Kanokar Ki'ik, spot pemandangan di dusun Webenahi dimana pengunjung dapat melihat Kampung Jokowi dari atas serta bukit-bukit dengan pemandangan yang mempesona.
Menuju ke arah barat dari Silawan menyusuri pantai utara, ada Atapupu dengan beberapa tempat wisata yang populer diantaranya adalah Pantai Pasir Putih, Jembatan Pelangi serta Teluk Gurita. Desa Silawan dan Atapupu terletak di sebelah utara kota Atambua, hanya menempuh perjalanan sekitar 20 menit dari pusat Kabupaten Belu ini.
Di sebelah timur Atambua, ada salah satu objek wisata yang tidak boleh terlewat jika sedang jalan-jalan keliling Atambua dan sekitarnya. Padang Fulan Fehan yang berada Kecamatan Lamaknen dan berada tepat di kaki gunung Lakaan memiliki pemandangan dataran tinggi yang indah. Padang rumput di atas awan, pemandangan puncak gunung Lakaan, hamparan perbukitan dan desa yang dapat dilihat dari sisi-sisi tebing sekitar Fulan Fehan serta Kuda dan hewan ternak lain yang mencari makan di padang ini.
Tidak jauh dari savana Fulan Fehan, terdapat Benteng 7 Lapis (Benteng Makes) yang terbuat dari batu karang di sekitar gunung. Benteng ini berada di dalam hutan yang cukup lebat dengan suasana yang cukup mistis.
Pergi atau pulang dari Fulan Fehan, jangan lupa untuk singgah menikmati pesona Air Terjun Mauhalek yang sangat memanjakan mata. Air Terjun Mauhalek berada di jalur antara Atambua - Fulan Fehan, tepatnya di Raiulun, Lasiolat.
Pesona wisata di Kabupaten Belu, tepatnya di Atambua dan sekitarnya memang tidak boleh dilewatkan jika sedang jalan-jalan keliling NTT.

Sekeliling kota Atambua dipagari oleh perbukitan. Bisa dibilang dan kita doakan selalu, Atambua adalah daerah yang tidak rawan akan bencana Alam seperti banjir, gempa, tsunami, yang bisa menimbulkan kerusakan yang parah.
Jarak dari kota Kupang ibukota provinsi Nusa Tenggara Timur ke Kota Atambua sekitar 274 km, dengan waktu tempuh menggunakan mobil atau bis sekitar 6.5 jam perjalanan.

TIMOREvery motorcycle traveller always wonder of what lies behind a random path next to the road.
That's exactly what came to mind when we travelled from Atambua to our next stop which supposedly to Fatumnasi to camp over night.
Instead we got lost somewhere in a beautiful plantation that led us to discover a beautiful untouched beach in the north shore of Timor.
Most bikers skipped exploring West Timor and went ahead to Timor Leste. But Natalie´s visa forced us to stay in within the border of Indonesia. But, we could not regret any bit of it. We got the chance to explore more of this beautiful and wild Island. There are so much more to offer on West Timor that unfortunately most motor travelers missed!
Timor is the heaven for adventure bikers like us!
