Top 10 Shameful Facts About Canada

Are these the 10 worst things that have ever happened in Canada?
Like any country, Canada has its fair share of proud moments. But, like every other country, it has also had its share of controversial moments. Here is a list of ten things in Canadian history that nobody likes to talk about.
THE RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL SYSTEM
Why did the residential school system bring shame to Canada? More than 150,000 native kids were thrown into this harsh and unfamiliar system against their will or the wishes of their parents. And, worse than that, some did not come home alive.
In the beginning of the 19th century, Canada established the Canadian Indian Residential School System as an attempt to help aboriginals make the transition from the traditional lifestyle lived for thousands of years to a more alternative, different way of life, with a more European influence.
Although the intention was to integrate Native Canadians within European-Canadian society, the whole process was far from positive for those families: thousands were separated from their families and communities, and the government has been accused of cultural genocide for the policy of not tolerating any native culture.
THE COMMERCIAL SEAL HUNT IN CANADA
Millions of Canadians are ashamed of the fact that the country has the largest slaughter of marine mammals on the planet. Not a record to be proud of, for sure. In the past four years, the hunt increased tremendously, although the global demand for seal products has decreased around the world. Attributed mainly to the 2009 ban on seal products in the European Union, although in 2015, the European Union did amend the ban to take into consideration the socioeconomic and cultural significance of seal hunting by the Inuit and other indigenous communities, allowing seal based products to exempted from the 2009 ban.
Images of seals being pummelled to death has shocked the public, and even though the Canadian government claims that it is no less cruel then what happens in slaughterhouses around the world, the public are adamant in their belief that the practice of seal hunting is cruel.
THE EXPULSION OF JAPANESE CANADIANS IN 1942
More than 25,000 Japanese Canadians had to abandon their homes due to an order from the Federal Cabinet, as the beginning of a process of confinement in camps, humiliated and feeling betrayed, more than 4000 Japanese opted to leave Canada under the repatriation scheme. Japanese Canadians that were confined to internment camps had their property confiscated and auctioned off to pay for their internment, the only race of people who were forced to pay for their own internment.
Traumatized by these events that lasted 8 years, the Japanese Canadians felt humiliated by such experience: victims of racism and discrimination, they knew that they were innocent victims, but they could not do anything to stop that.
But things are different lately, discrimination has considerably decreased, and Japanese Canadians are now viewed no differently than anyone else: they are seen as well-educated, hard-working and integrated to Canadian culture, while keeping their own tradition.
THE BAN ON BLACK IMMIGRANTS IN 1911
On the assumption that African-Americans could never meet the strict regulations on health and financial support set by the government, nor the literacy level of Canadians, many Black African immigrants were not allowed to enter Canada. When The Immigration Act was passed it gave the government total power to regulate immigration in Council (i.e. on whim), with prohibitions of immigrants belonging to any class, occupation or character unsuited to the climate or requirements of Canada. Another Order in Council was released in order to discourage any black immigrant to move to Canada.
LAKE ONTARIO’S POLLUTION
Home and source of drinking water for more than 9 million people, Lake Ontario has suffered from pollution from human activities, resulting in the extinction of species of fish, among other environmental issues. But many f the fish that would normally be eaten by the population are now considered inappropriate and dangerous, as several tests are performed regularly and samples of phosphorus, dioxins and other toxins have been found in species such as salmon and trout. Because of mercury, thousands of kilos of fish are not available for consumption.
Lake Ontario Waterkeeper, a Canadian charity organization, is constantly trying to warn the population on how to avoid polluting the lake, as well as advocating for new laws to protect Lake Ontario.

Top beautiful places to visit when traveling in Canada | Montreal, Toronto

Canada is the second largest country in the world, surpassed only by Russia in size. The area of Canada is 9 million square meters. km, but in general its territory is sparsely populated. In total, 32 million people live in the country (2003). Geographers have calculated that for every Canadian there are 30 hectares of fields and forests, for every seven - along a lake, and for every family - along a river or a large stream.
The nature of Canada is very similar to the Russian one. Here you can see tundra, taiga, huge forests and steppes. The Pacific coast is distinguished by beautiful coniferous forests. The Northern Lights are not uncommon in Canada. Canada has a large number of lakes, rivers and waterfalls.
Canada is a developed economy. Many minerals are mined here: nickel, asbestos, cobalt. In addition, the country is rich in oil, gas, uranium, which are necessary for obtaining atomic energy. The factories of the country produce a variety of products: from jet planes and ocean-going ships to paper. A lot of wheat is grown in Canada. Herds of cows, sheep, herds of horses graze on vast meadows.
Happy viewing friends =)

When we first published The Top Worst Places to Move in Canada, it was not received so well. Probably because of the use of 'worst' in the title. So we decided to ask you. We conducted an internet poll, that most scientific of data collection methods. The poll included the 8 cities in our original list and 12 major cities throughout Canada. Here's how our users ranked the top 10:

7. TIE: MONTREAL, THETFORD MINES, SARNIA AND VANCOUVER - 5% OF VOTES
Thetford Mines and Sarnia both found themselves on our original list due to their reputations for being extremely polluted. There was considerable debate in the comments section of the article about whether or not Sarnia remains polluted. In 2013 a Canadian magazine ran a story claiming that Sarnia was the most polluted city in Canada.
FactJunkie writes:
Sarnia has impressive social services available and is a common through-destination for people traveling to the States. Heck, the similar city of Windsor, Ontario has higher unemployment and is right across from Detroit... it has higher suicide rates, too. And it's only 2 hours away from Sarnia. Another great pick.

M Egan S Horttie writes:
Sorry Ana if you lived in Sarnia, you would see that there is some truth to this article lol. If you are not working in either the Chemical Valley part of Sarnia or Blue water health, expect an entry level low paying job here.
Corduroy-Pillows writes:
Over last couple years, Downtown Sarnia has enjoyed and very encouraging amount of revitalization. New residential spaces converted from older buildings and homegrown businesses moving into the empty store fronts. There's First Fridays events, a few decent festivals, art galleries, music venues, pubs, restaurants, green space and a new craft brewery opening up downtown. Sarnia is doing fine.
M Egan S Horttie counters:
Really where? because I sure as hell didn't see much of anything, and I was there 2 days ago Where was I going ? Work place Group Employment! because I trained for 6 weeks, for a different trade out side of London (Yet another opportunity not available in this dump!) OH WOW more pubs ,and restaurants? That oughta boost our horrible employment rate, best look for another job on the side.. (If you can even f*cking find one) Let's not forget our lovely waterfront Centennial Park, full of Asbestos. As a kid ya this city was great, Canatara Park was awesome, the Howard Watson Natural trail is great the Beach, is great. I loved the Animal Farm. But as far as employment goes, that's far from being revitalized, not everyone wants to be a Chemical Engineer, or a goddamn nurse. Or sharpen pencils all day in an office. Those are pretty much your only options here. Oh and such a shame about Montanas, AGAIN. You like many other Sarnians may already be retired, not young and looking to find their way. Sarnia is showing it's age, and it's not looking good so far. It's old, and tired like the many people who live here anyway. The only big success was Bayfest. But even that seems to have been taken away from us. Oh yes, and apparently blinkers are optional on cars in this city.

The Best Places to Visit in Vermont, USA

The Best Places to Visit in Vermont, USA

Vermont is equal parts myth and reality. A mere mention of its name and images appear: sunlit meadows of black-and-white cows, dazzling white ski trails, tidy hillside farms, blazing red maple trees along a stone wall, covered bridges, buckets collecting sap for maple syrup.

Vermont is a place, but also a state of mind that revels in outdoor beauty, good food, and the preservation of unique small towns and cities. Visitors love Vermont for its colorful fall foliage; ski mountains like Killington, Manchester, Stowe, and Mount Snow; mountain vistas; and attractions for families and kids. Although Vermont is an inland state, it has beaches and water sports at the Lake Champlain, along with many lakes, streams, and swimming holes.

History Of Holmes Foundry

Built in 1918 in partnership with Henry Ford, Holmes-Blunt Ltd. became a huge employer in the Sarnia area. The site of the second ever sit-down protest in Canada, a massive race-riot was instigated in 1937, just before the industrial union movement took off.

The Labour Health Ministry didn't act on several dozen health and safety code violations they discovered between 1958 and 1976- eventually leading to several dozen deaths from Asbestosis and related illnesses.

The complex was closed in 1988, partially demolished in 1989 then finally totally demolished in 2021.

URBEX | We explore the dangerous abandoned asbestos mining village in the Cyprus mountains.

Last November we went to Cyprus and on one day we headed up the mountains to take a look at some places we had seen that may of been of interest via google maps. We found 3 places and this is the first.
Its a miners village for an asbestos mine that we think shut around 1996 and has been left abandoned ever since. Their did seem to be some form of patrols near by and certain roads where restricted access.

Abandoned Train Tracks: Charlie I see where it goes

Abandoned Train Tracks: Charlie I see where it goes

Roaring Camp is a historic mining town located in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California. It was founded during the California Gold Rush of the mid-19th century and became a thriving mining community during that time.

The town was named after the roaring sound made by the nearby San Lorenzo River, which was caused by the heavy winter rains that frequently hit the region. The town quickly grew into a bustling community with over 3,500 residents, many of whom were miners and their families.

In its early days, Roaring Camp was a rough-and-tumble town, known for its saloons, gambling halls, and other vices. However, it also had a more respectable side, with churches, schools, and other community institutions.

The gold rush brought many people to Roaring Camp, including prospectors from all over the world. They came to the town in search of gold, and many of them found it. The discovery of gold in the nearby hills and streams led to a massive influx of people, and the town quickly became one of the most important mining centers in the region.
As the town grew, so did the infrastructure that supported it. The town had a post office, several general stores, hotels, restaurants, and even a stagecoach stop. The San Lorenzo River was dammed to provide water for the miners, and a network of canals and flumes was built to carry the water to the mines.

Despite its rough beginnings, Roaring Camp eventually became a more settled and prosperous community. The town's residents built homes, schools, and churches, and the population stabilized at around 1,500 people.

The town's economy continued to be based on mining well into the 20th century, but by the mid-1900s, most of the mines had been played out. Many of the town's residents moved away in search of work elsewhere, and Roaring Camp began to decline.

In the 1950s, the town was purchased by a group of investors who saw its potential as a tourist destination. They restored many of the historic buildings, including the general store and the post office, and turned them into museums and gift shops.

Today, Roaring Camp is a popular tourist attraction that gives visitors a glimpse into the history of the California Gold Rush. Visitors can take a ride on a historic narrow-gauge railroad that winds through the redwood forests and along the banks of the San Lorenzo River. They can also pan for gold, visit the historic buildings, and learn about the town's rich history.

Overall, Roaring Camp is an important part of California's history and a fascinating place to visit. Its rich mining heritage, coupled with its natural beauty and unique attractions, make it a must-see destination for anyone interested in the history of the American West.

TOP 8 WORST PLACES TO MOVE IN CANADA (2013)

416-962-2623 / 1-866-760-2623
We’ve told you about some of the underrated immigration destinations in Canada, now check out our list of places prospective Canadians should avoid: the poor places, the racist places, the isolated places, the depressing places, the worst of the worst! Naturally, the tiny towns in the woods of Northern Ontario or the southern shore of Newfoundland would be the worst of the worst, but let’s be reasonable. Here are list of towns and cities with a substantial population (at least 5000 residents) that might seem like a decent idea to a prospective immigrant interested in a slower pace of living.

High crime rate? Check.
High unemployment? Check.
High cost of living? Check.
Limited access to services? Check.
High property taxes? Check.
Bad weather? Check.
Despite being a small, quaint city just a few hours from Halifax, New Glasgow tops polls of the worst places to live in Canada. How could those 10,000 people stand it? They must have all been born there.
In 2009 New Glasgow ranked 36th out of 208 in StatsCan's crime severity index. The crime rate increased from 2011 to 2012, and was significantly higher than the provincial average.
In 2006, New Glasgow had an unemployment rate of 7.7%. It has decreased since then and, as of the 2011 census, it was 5.7%, or slightly lower than the provincial average.
The cost of living in New Glasgow was estimated by one website to be 4% higher than the cost of living in New York City, but only 30.3% of those reporting say their households earn more than $60,000 Canadian per year (after taxes).
Property tax in New Glasgow was higher than the average in Nova Scotia and significantly higher than Halifax up to and including 2013.
Climate
New Glasgow receives 1212 cm of precipitation per year (that's more than Vancouver).
2. Kitchener - Waterloo, Ontario

Congratulations, Kitchener / Waterloo, you are the hate crime capital of Canada! Despite hosting two universities and a massive tech company campus, the Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge tri-city area experiences a high per capita rate of verbal and physical assaults on ethnic, religious and gay minorities. Despite its location in the highly diverse Southern Ontario region, Kitchener has inherited the mantle from the previous main offender, Calgary.
In 2011 Kitchener-Waterloo was surpassed by Peterborough, Hamilton and Ottawa in police-reported hate crimes, however the rate remained at nearly double the national average.
3. Thetford Mines, Quebec
The third of the three rogues’ gallery dwellers is poor Thetford Mines, the heart of Quebec’s asbestos mining region and the winner of the title Most Polluted City in Canada. Despite the overwhelming evidence of the dangerous health effects of asbestos, Canada still mines the dangerous mineral, and the biggest mine in a populated area is in Thetford Mines.
4. Bay Roberts, Newfoundland
Photos by Werner Koehler, via Wikimedia Commons
Many, many other rural communities on the east coast could make this list, but Bay Roberts appears because it has the highest unemployment rate in Canada, at 17%. Despite the oil, gas, mining and hydro-power booms in Newfoundland, Bay Roberts has somehow managed to avoid the job benefits. This wouldn’t seem so peculiar if Bay Roberts wasn’t just an hour’s drive from money-drunk St. John’s and other rapidly expanding bedroom communities like Conception Bay South.
The unemployment rate has improved as it was 20.7% in 2006
5. Sarnia, Ontario
Sarnia itself may not be so bad, but its view of and proximity to American heavy industry helps to reinforce the fact that this border town is polluted. It also has an empty downtown and a shrinking population.
6. Saint John, New Brunswick

Long known as the unglamourous milltown cousin to its apostrophic neighbour to the east, St. John’s, Saint John is a dirty, stinky pulp and paper port on the Bay of Fundy. Despite the natural beauty nearby, the city has a declining population and few economic opportunities outside of the paper mills, nuclear power plant, and small university satellite campus. Don’t end up in Saint John when you want to live in St. John’s!
