From the 19th century AD, this region was governed by District Collectors and Judges appointed by the British authorities. In 1910, for the sake of administrative efficiency, the District of Ramanathapuram was established by delineating areas from the Madurai and Tirunelveli districts.
Following India's independence in 1948, the zamins were abolished. In 1985, the Ramanathapuram district was divided into three separate districts through State Government Notification, G.O. Ms. 347 dated 08.03.1985, resulting in the formation of Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, and Virudhunagar districts.
The district is organized into three Revenue Divisions: Aruppukottai, Sivakasi, and Sattur, and comprises ten taluks, which are Aruppukottai, Kariyapatti, Rajapalayam, Sattur, Sivakasi, Srivilliputtur, Tiruchuli, Virudhunagar, Vembakottai, and Wathirairuppu.
