Beaches of the Costa Vicentina, Algarve west coast
When you think of a beach or seaside holiday in the Algarve, you immediately see in your mind the picturesque bays with their typical rock formations, caves and grottos, which are visited by masses of people in the summer months.
However, those who prefer deserted beaches and wild nature to the crowded beaches of the western Algarve will find a wonderfully beautiful natural paradise with natural beaches and magnificent dunes in the south-west of the Algarve in the nature reserve of Costa Vicentina. The barren and rough coastal landscape between Sagres and Odeceixe, especially, is dotted with steep cliffs and headlands, from which one can get an incomparable view down into bays and across endless sandy beaches. Often, the narrow paths from the main roads to the beaches meander endlessly through the countryside towards the sea, until they suddenly provide you with views of a beautiful coast.
Between Carrapateira and Aljezur lies the small fishing village of Arrifana with its beautiful beach, Praia do Arrifana, which is situated in a shell-shaped bay. The beach is narrow, no more than 700 metres, and is protected by imposing black slate rocks. From the northern tip of the beach, you have a panoramic view of the ruins of the fortress of Arrifana..
At the northern end of the beach, next to the fishing port, there are good conditions for diving. The beach is also popular with surfers and bodyboarders. However, the Praia do Arrifana is classified as a beach with limited use, because due to the high rock walls at the back there is danger of falling rocks.

Arrifana Beach Aljezur Algarve Portugal
This beach is located in a beautiful cove in the shape of a shell, sheltered from the cold north and swells of the north, associated with a small fishing village.
The sand is extensive, with more than 500 meters, it is bordered by imposing black cliffs, carved in schist. Looking south, a dark and narrow gravel rising from the sea stands out in the landscape; it is the Pedra da Agulha that has become an icon of the Vincentian coast.
There are good conditions for diving at the northern end of the beach, next to the fishing port, which is also one of the best beaches for surfing and bodyboarding. The panoramic view of the Fortress of Arrifana (currently in ruins), at the top of the northern cliff, is breathtaking.
At Ponta da Atalaia, famous for its barnacles, there are traces of a Muslim Ribat, a convent-fortress of great archaeological value.
Note: Given the possibility of landslides and rocks coming off, it is recommended that you keep a safe distance from the cliffs.
Road access is tarmacked from the southern entrance to Aljezur (EN 120), heading towards the beach for approximately 8 km. Ample and orderly parking at the top of the cliff, before heading down to the beach. Restricted road traffic and parking next to the beach. Support equipment (restaurant, toilet and recreational support – surf school) and surveillance during the bathing season. Orientation: west / southwest.
GPS: 37° 17' 41.06 N 8°51' 58.61 W
The Fortress of Arrifana is a military monument, located in the town of Arrifana, in the municipality of Aljezur, in the Algarve region, in Portugal. It was built in 1635 to protect the coastal strip in the Arrifana area, having been the subject of several rebuilding works throughout its history, mainly after the destruction caused by the 1755 earthquake. It went into decline at the end of the 18th century, and in 1861 was already completely abandoned. The fortress is located on a promontory, about 70 m above sea level.

Costa Vicentina | Arrifana | Algarve

Top Ten Best Beaches in Algarve, Portugal. The Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region, is known for its Atlantic beaches and golf resorts. Whitewashed fishing villages on low cliffs overlooking sandy coves were transformed in the 1960s, and now its central coast between Lagos and Faro is lined with villas, hotels, bars and restaurants. The region's western Atlantic coast and rugged interior are less developed.

The Fishermen’s Trail, Southwest Portugal - Day 6 - Aljezur to Arrifana
This could have been a shorter re-positioning day, but we extended it to see more beaches, which we were looking forward to making a walk of 11 miles. We had booked breakfast at our Hotel (Vincentina), at 7.30am, and we were not disappointed. It was all beautifully set out for us, with a great choice, of breads, croissants, eggs, juice, coffee etc. The hotel is next door to the Inter March shop which opens at 8.30am, there is a laundrette in the basement car park-if only we had known!!! Leaving at 8.45am, we went back over the bridge passing large information boards about the walk, turned right, then left through the town. On reaching the church we turned left down a road, before passing a well, Fonte das Mentiras which has Islamic origins dating back to the C10th (9.05am). Continuing uphill passing new houses, we had great views inland and over to the coast with some salt pans. Turning right along a main road for about two miles (Monte do Carrical 9.50am), right again along small roads, then a sandy track, we arrived at the unfortunately closed Cafe Taberna do Gabriel with stunning views of Amoreira beach at 11.05am.
Heading south once more, we stopped for lunch at O Ze, before having more breath-taking views from the promontory at Ponta da Atalaia. Spot the fishermen perched high on the edge of the cliffs, an amazing way of fishing-and looked pretty dangerous too. We arrived at some marvellous ruins dating from 1150, which we took our time to explore. Turning left, we headed inland along a dusty track-which seemed hard-going in the afternoon heat. Eventually we were on a road that led to our destination of hotel Vale da Telha, at 3.15pm happy to arrive, and again chilled out in the large-but slightly cool pool.
We went to a local shop to buy lunch for the following day, before going to the nearby Font do Vale restaurant for dinner, which had a great choice of food and football shown too. This was another great day, tough walking in the sand and heat!! We need to leave early-but difficult to do when such superb buffet breakfasts are supplied!!.

Praia da Arrifana - Algarve holidays, Portugal
Praia da Arrifana -
Praia da Arrifana is a blue flag beach that is hugely popular with the surfing crowd. The town itself here clings to the hillside overlooking the bay and provides visitors with a variety of individual accommodations and restaurants. There is a hip feel to this whole area and lots of surf based shops to cater for the local sport of choice. There is a delightful picnic spot just on the beach road where you can relax and enjoy the views and watch the rollers crashing in. There is a fantastic look out point high above the cliffs at the site of an ancient fortress dating back to 12th century. This long sweeping bay is the focal point of this quirky area and it is now a holiday village in it's own right these days. Although parking is available, it is limited beside the beach and further parking can be found higher up in the town. Facilities include toilets, showers and beach bar.

Arrifana Aljezur Algarve Portugal (HD)

The beach has more than 500 meters long and forms a small bay surrounded by cliffs and slopes. In the southern part of the beach and in the water, there is a rock known as The Needle Stone, due to its vertical form. It is considered one of the best beaches for surfing all year round. A small harbor shelters fishing boats, which is the main livelihood of the people of this region. Beside that remains of the ruins of the Fortress, you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the Costa Vicentina.*carl0spais*2012.

(EN) Arrifana Beach is located 10 km from Aljezur - Algarve Portugal in the Natural Park Costa Vicentina. It is a beautiful beach in front of a shell-shaped bay. Due to the high cliffs, it gives bathers and surfers a little shelter from the north winds that hit other locations of Costa Vicentina. On top of a cliff there is a small fortress dating back to 1635 but destroyed during the 1755 earthquake.
