Crossing the border: Thailand to Cambodia
Here is a step by step guide to crossing this notorious route.
Note: We just landed on Don Meung airport coming from Koh Samui, the previous night and decided to just spend the night at the airport because you have to be extremely early if you want to take the train going to Aranyaprathet .
FARE BREAKDOWN WITH COST OF VISA:
1. Train going to Hualampong Station: 20 Baht = $0.58

Setelah di Episode 9 kami berbagi cerita tentang perjalanan lintas negara dari Siem Reap menuju Poipet, kota perbatasan Kamboja, kini akhirnya kami berhasil memasuki Thailand. Melintasi imigrasi dan tiba di kota Aranyaprathet, kami disambut dengan tantangan baru: mencari tiket kereta murah seharga 20 ribuan rupiah dari Aranyaprathet untuk menuju ke kota Bangkok.
Tantangan yang kami hadapi tak hanya berebut tiket, tetapi juga bertahan hidup di Aranyaprathet, kota kecil dengan keterbatasan makanan halal. Saat loket tiket akhirnya dibuka, kami menaiki kereta tradisional yang membawa kami kembali ke masa lalu—jendela terbuka lebar, kipas angin berputar, dan kursi yang menguji kesabaran.
Di tengah perjalanan, kami menikmati jajanan dari pedagang asongan yang wara-wiri di gerbong. Perjalanan ini menjadi lebih dari sekadar perpindahan tempat; ini adalah pengalaman tak terlupakan.

Followed my friend to go visit his daughter in Aranyaprathet (Thai: อรัญประเทศ) is a district (Amphoe) in Sa Kaeo Province in Thailand. It borders Cambodia to the East. I can't believe how many people were out so early in the morning as 40 min before that we were down the road eating rice porridge in the wet market.
Aranyaprathet was formerly a stop on the railroad connecting Bangkok with Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Rail service was interrupted at the border when the Khmer Rouge seized power in Cambodia in 1975. It is a popular destination for Thai, Cambodian and expatriate visitors who are attracted by the border crossing with its market and casinos. Gambling is illegal in both Thailand and Cambodia, but enterprising politicians and businessmen have created a popular string of 7 casinos in the strip of land separating the border checkpoints of the two countries. As the closest casinos to Bangkok (3-5 hrs overland (car/bus)), these are well-frequented and have resulted in numerous bankruptcies and soaring real estate prices in the town. Although they make up most of the staff of the casinos, Cambodian citizens are generally not permitted to enter as paying customers. Expatriates in Thailand often use the border crossing to renew their Thai visa or to cross over to Cambodia, en route to the temples of Siem Reap. Aranyaprathet's twin city on the Cambodian side is Poiphet, the western terminus of National Highway 5, leading to Phnom Penh.
Prasat Khao Noi - Ancient Khmer Ruin on the Cambodian Border - Thailand 2023
Prasat Khao Noi is a stone castle that is believed to be a religious place for Hinduism. It is assumed that this castle was built in the 12th Buddhist century and was renovated in the 15th Buddhist century and remained important until the 16th Buddhist century. On top of the little pink hill In the Aranyaprathet District, Sa Kaeo Province, about 1 kilometer from the Thai-Cambodian border. It was registered as an important national historic site March 8, 1935.
This Prasat is a brick building without cement (no mortar). Originally there were 3 after the outer 2 collapsed, leaving only the middle prang and 2 mounds. Many antiques were found in the area.
The most important archaeological artifact is the lintel at Khao Noi. There was a Khmer style lintel of Sambor Pai Kuk. Attached above the door frame of the entrance to the middle prang, the Khao Noi inscription (the oldest inscription in Thailand) is inscribed in Panwa script on the doorframe of the middle prang on the right hand side of the door.
There are leaf patterns in the style of Khmer art in the Gulen style. A sculpture of a person with four hands standing above the buffalo's head. It is assumed that it is a picture of Durga when she defeats a buffalo beast or Mahisa Sura Madhana. These antiques, some of them have been lost over the years, have been transferred to storage.
In the year 1989 the fine arts department began excavation of Prasat Khao Noi. After excavating all the accumulated soil from Prasat Khao Noi, it was found that the northern prang and the central prang were on the same base. But the northern pagoda was built protruding outside. The south building is located on the base of the same height, but is slightly separated from each other, only the brick base at the back is connected to the others.
All the ruins have only one way out, which is to the east. In front of the castle there are stairs leading up to all 3 buildings, and on some of the steps of all 3 buildings, there are square incisions at both ends. may be intended to plug in the wooden pillars which connected the roof of the wooden arches from all 4 sides. The center prang has been constructed with 3 fake doors in the cardinal directions with the east being the only opening.
There were other lintels found at the site and a few are still near the ruin. The site is in poor condition but it’s still worth a short visit if you enjoy Khmer architecture.

People have said that the Aranyaprathet / Poipet border crossing is by far the worst crossing of all the land borders in Thailand post covid. Poipet, Cambodia, is know for its casinos, telemarketing scammers, and worse of all human trafficking. Watch as my friend and I cross into Cambodia. Crazy CHEAP TRAIN RIDE from Thailand to Cambodia for $1.25 🇹🇭/🇰🇭
I took an insanely cheap train from Bangkok, Thailand all the way to the Cambodian border. Then I crossed on foot and took a taxi and a tuktuk over to Siem Reap, Cambodia. From all the research, stories, and preparation I did in advance I was expecting a horrible experience full of discomfort and scams. But I was surprised to encounter nothing but great things, every step of the way!
The train wasn't very comfortable, but it was a comfortable temperature, spacious and roomy, and even had street food vendors walking up and down the aisles selling food, snacks, and drinks. The taxi ride to the city was relaxing. And even the tuktuk driver Noice was very friendly, helpful, and brought me straight to my hostel.
I highly recommend taking this same train in the morning if you want to visit Cambodia. I still cannot believe it was only $1.25!!!
