24 Hours In Anacortes, WA
Anacortes is a charming small town located on Fidalgo Island, a quick 90 minutes from Seattle. The town offers great views of the Cascade Mountains and the San Juan Islands.
During this 24 hour visit to Anacortes, the main goal was to explore the Historic Downtown, The Marina, The Farmers Market and have my first Turkish Coffee. It was good😋
Stop by Zaza’s Coffee stand at Cap Sante Marina, say “Hi” to Leo and enjoy a yummy treat!
We stayed at The Majestic Inn & Spa: A luxury historic hotel in downtown with a fantastic rooftop bar.
It was closed during our stay ☹ It opens up in May.
To see more of Anacortes, click on the link below for some outdoor adventures such as Cap Sante Viewpoint & Washington Park.
Thank you!

Anacortes, Washington - Hidden Gem | Top things to do in Anacortes, WA in Fidalgo Island | Day trip
Located on Fidalgo Island, Anacortes beautifully represents the Pacific Northwest. Often disregarded over its more popular neighbors (Seattle, Bellingham, and Vancouver BC), it’s a true hidden gem. Anacortes is more convenient than you think. It’s about a 1.5-hour drive from Seattle and well worth it. Aside from a drive, Anacortes has a ferry running from Seattle, Canada, and the coveted San Juan islands known for their relaxing getaways. Whether you’re making a detour or day trip, Anacortes may be the perfect answer you’re looking for. The Deception Pass Bridge connects Fidalgo Island to Whidbey Island. The bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. According to the Washington Department of Transportation, the bridge spans more than a quarter-mile and graces an average of 18,000 vehicles per day. Whether you enjoy whale watching, kayaking, or fishing, Anacortes is a paradise for people who love the outdoors. The Washington Loop Trail is one of the major attraction in Anacortes for its picturesque views and an easy loop hike. The trail is shared between pedestrians and cars in a one-way loop. There are three separate areas in Washington Park - Sunset Beach, Loop Road, and the campground. Loop Road has 3 Major Viewpoints - Burrows Channel Lookout, West Beach & Green point and the third is the Sunset Beach. Cap Sante Park, Anacortes, Washington - Cap Sante Park is a lushly-forested 37-acre park along Anacortes' eastern edge, known for its stunning overlook views of Fidalgo Bay, March Point, and the Cascade Mountains. The park, which is located above the Cap Sante Boat Haven Marina, is a popular family-friendly recreation site throughout the summer months. A short mile-long roundtrip hiking trail traverses grassy stretches and glacial outcroppings as it gains 100 feet in elevation, passing by a thickly-forested area that is home to day-use picnic sites. At the trail's end, visitors can enjoy unparalleled views of nearby Mounts Erie and Baker. Remains of a former amphitheater are showcased on the park's eastern banks, making for interesting photo opportunities. San Juan Island, WA State Ferry Tips
⛴️ Island Time!
If you are headed to one of the San Juan Islands from the Anacortes, WA ferry terminal, here are our best tips for a smooth sailing!
⏰ Even in the off season, we recommend making ferry reservations for peace of mind. Reservation space is released at 7am each morning. Set an alarm or alert for yourself! Spots on the ferry are rolled out in 3 tiers:
30% of the spots on the boat can be reserved 2 months ahead of sailing day and time.
30% more of the spots on the boat can be reserved 2 weeks ahead of sailing day and time.
30% more are available 2 days before sailing day and time.
10% is reserved for day of ticket purchases.
☝🏻We recommend arriving 45-60 minutes before your reserved sailing. With a reservation, the rule is 30 minutes before, but we like to give ourselves a 15-30 minute cushion, just in case.
⛽️ Fill up your gas tank before driving on to the ferry. As you might guess, prices are much more expensive on the islands, and there are fewer places to fill up. Locally, we found the Costco in Burlington, WA to have the cheapest price, and the Safeway in Anacortes 2nd cheapest.
🍩 Leave yourself enough time for a stop at the Donut House in Anacortes for Apple Fritters as big as your head, and delicious Fidalgo coffee.
😎Once on the ferry, get out of the car, and explore! Our kids love finding puzzles to complete or add to while we sail. There are so many different areas and vantage points to take in the surrounding water and islands. You never know, you might see one of our resident Orca Whales! Try taking in the views from the back of the ferry—warmer, minimal wind, and less people!
🍻🥖Some vessels have galleys with refreshments, while some do not, check the WSDOT website for up to date info. Make sure to pack a picnic or check ahead if you are traveling around mealtimes.
Have you traveled to Washington State’s San Juan Islands? Have a favorite island, park, restaurant, farm, or other destination? We’d love to know!

BEST Place to See Orcas in North America | San Juan Island, Washington
Today we will be exploring San Juan Island and we have a lot of fun things planned! We have booked a whale watching tour for the afternoon which we are so excited about! This area is known for whale watching so we have our fingers crossed...
We have an early morning as we catch the 5AM ferry from Anacortes to San Juan island. We arrive on the island just after 6AM, before the sun is even up so we head to the southern part of the island to start the day.
We go to Cattle Point Lighthouse on the very southernmost tip of the island which is a great place to catch the sunrise. We find the perfect spot overlooking the sea with the lighthouse in the foreground and the sky really puts on a show!
The sunrise alone is incredible but as we are sitting and watching, we hear an entire pod of orcas swimming right along the coast next to us. We are so surprised and delighted and we follow them along the coast for 10 minutes or so, barely able to contain our excitement.
They swim out of view so we head back to our sunrise post and watch as the sun makes its way up over the islands in the distance! After the sun comes up, we take a walk around the lighthouse and down by the coast.
We then head to the nearby American Camp. The island actually has both an American Camp in the south and an English Camp in the north which we will be visiting later in the day. Back when the ownership of the San Juan Islands were disputed between England and the United States, tensions rose between he two countries and military camps were built. After 12 peaceful years of joint occupation, the US was given title to the islands but both camps still remain on the Island.
We make one more quick stop for a walk along South Beach before heading back to Friday Harbor for our 11AM whale watching tour. We booked a 3 hour tour with Spirit of Orca Whale Watching & Wildlife Tours. It is a smaller boat which only holds 6 passengers plus our captain so we are really excited. We have NEVER been whale watching so we don't know what to expect but after the morning we have pretty high hopes!
We still have about 30 minutes before our meeting time so we grab some coffee and walk around Friday Harbor. Friday Harbor is a charming town full of galleries, shops, restaurants. As we are sitting in the harbor watching the boats, we actually get a call from our boat captain asking if we can meet a little early because he has already located the pod of orcas and he wants to get back out to them as quickly as possible.
Just when we thought the day couldn’t get any better, we now have very high hopes we will see yet another pod of orcas! We head over to the dock and wait for the boat to arrive. All 6 of us hop on the boat and our captain Ken does a quick intro before immediately heading back out to where he left the whales.
After following the pod for around an hour and a half, they cross over into Canadian waters and unfortunately we cannot follow. The tour is not over yet! We drive around the beautiful islands for another hour or so spotting all kinds of wildlife including harbor seals, several types of birds, porpoises, and even an entire island covered in exotic deer and sheep.
We make it back to Friday Harbor and after our tour, we head to Lime Kiln Point State Park. There is beautiful coastline and a lighthouse here making for stunning scenery, but the park is considered one of the best places in the world to whale watch from land. Considering we have now seen orcas twice today, we are not getting any hopes up but we go to have a picnic and enjoy the views.
Next we head a bit further norther to English Camp which to be honest was a bit more elaborate than the American Camp. Waterfront property, large trees and even a formal garden.
And finally, we make a quick stop at Roche Harbor to grab some provisions for sunset. We talk to a friendly local who recommends we go to San Juan County Park. We head to the park and post up for an amazing sunset which is the perfect way to end the day!
