SEGEZHA. The Town of Leading PULP AND PAPER MILL and Wooden Houses. The Republic of Karelia Russia.
Segezha is the town in the Republic of Karelia of Russia. It is located in 260km north from Petrozavodsk, the capital city of Karelia. In the place where Segezha river meets Vygozero (Vyg Lake).
Founded in 1914.
In 1915 during the construction of St Petersburg-Murmansk railway, the line was laid down through Segezha. It is gave the first move of development to the town.
In 1933 was finished the construction of 227km long The White Sea and Baltics Canal which is connected The White Sea and Lake Onega (Volga and Baltics Route). The way of canal went through Segezha.
So, in 1935, the Soviet government considered Segezha as a great place for the Pulp and Paper Mill and ordered its construction.
Segezha Pulp and Paper Mill was launched in 1939. That was the main driver for the growth of Segezha settlement which is in 1943 got a status of a town.
Segezha’s Mill turned to be one of the biggest Pulp and Paper Mills in the Soviet Union.
On a peak of its history before the collapse of USSR, the population of Segezha was 38,000 residents. But now after 30 years dropped down to 25,000.
However, Segezha Pulp and Paper Mill keep staying one of the leaders in production of kraft paper and paper sacks with recently 2,000 employees.
