5 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Pittsburgh, United States

On the north-western Allegheny Plateau, at the point where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers join to form the Ohio, lies the city of Pittsburgh, surrounded by the wooded hills of the western Appalachians.

The wealth of the city came from these hills: the coal mined here was the basis of a great steel industry which at one time produced half the total requirements of the United States. However, Pittsburgh is no longer the soot-encrusted coal and steel town of the past, but rather a metropolis with fine parks and gardens flanking the rivers and a modern city centre with established cultural institutions such as the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Pittsburgh Opera. Let's see five tourist attractions in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

1. Phipps Conservatory
2. Carnegie Museum of Art
3. Carnegie Science Center
4. Andy Warhol Museum
5. Frick Art and Historical Center

THINGS TO DO IN PITTSBURGH & CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA | Pennsylvania Travel Vlog

Welcome to Pennsylvania!

Although I'm a Florida girl now, I'm originally from the slightly chillier state of Pennsylvania. We took a trip over the holidays and split the time between Pittsburgh and my home town, Patton.

Here's what we did:

PITTSBURGH
*Andy Warhol Bridge & Rachel Carson Bridge - Fun fact, Pittsburgh is home to 446 bridges. You definitely can't miss them! They may make navigating the city slightly challenging, but they are a beauty to look at.

*North Shore - In the North Shore is where you'll find Heinz Field where the Pittsburgh Steelers play and PNC Park where the Pittsburgh Pirate play. There are also many sports bars and brewhouses in that area. We ventured to that side of town to visit the Carnegie Science Center, but sadly the science center was closed.

*Primanti Brothers - A Pittsburgh legend, Primanti Brothers originated in the city and are famous for their almost famous sandwiches. They are unique because they come with hand-cut fries and vinegar based coleslaw on them. I recommend the Pittsburgher or the roast beef sandwich!

*Kimpton Hotel Monaco Pittsburgh - We stayed here while we were in Pittsburgh and absolutely loved it! It is very artsy and instagramable. It was also comfortable and clean. Here is the the link to my hotel tour video I made while staying there for more information on the hotel:

*PPG Place - PPG Place is a complex downtown. During the holiday season, they have an iceskating rink in the center of the plaza!

*Point State Park - Point State Park is where the Allegheny & Monongahela rivers meet, forming the Ohio River. It is also where Fort Duquesne once stood in 1754, as it was established by the French and taken over by the English.

*Monongahela Incline - There is a lot of cool history associated with Pittsburgh's inclines. Built in 1870, the Monongahela Incline is the oldest continuously operating funicular in the United States. It's only $3.50 for a roundtrip ticket up & down. at the top, you'll find Mount Washington.

*Grand Concourse - In Station Square, you'll find the Grand Concourse. It is an old train station turned restaurant, and it is extremely beautiful inside!

*Strip District - The Strip District's streets are lined with indoor & outdoor markets, grocers, and gourmet food. You can experience a wide variety of treats, culture, and stock up on your Pittsburgh Steelers merch.

*Union Station - The Union Station, also known as the Penn Station, was once another train station. Now it is an apartment complex, The Pennsylvanian Apartments. I love the architecture and the beautiful lights. It's great for snapping a few photos!

CENTRAL PA
*Schwab Estate & Mount Assisi Gardens - Located in Loretto, PA, these grounds were once the grounds and summer home of Charles Schwab, Andrew Carnegie's trusted lieutenant and the first president of the United States Steel Corporation. It is a beautiful place to visit, walk around, and to take photos.

*Horseshoe Curve - The Hourseshoe Curve was completed in 1854 to lessen the grade to the summit of the Allegheny Mountains. Now, there is a Railroaders Memorial Museum where you can check out some exhibits and history on the Curve. You can also take the incline (or stairs) up the hillside to unwind at the trackside observation park and watch as the many trains roll by. Here's a link to another video I made on Altoona's Horseshoe Curve:

*Blue Knob All Seasons Resort - Blue Knob is a ski resort in Claysburg. It is the highest skiable mountain in PA. They have snow tubing, snowboarding, and other fun stuff to do! For our first time ever snowboarding (or skiing), I think we did pretty good!

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - Driving the South Tenth Street Bridge (2021)

To view this drive in 4x speed visit...

South Tenth Street Bridge, most often called the Tenth Street Bridge, but officially dubbed the Philip Murray Bridge, is a suspension bridge spanning the Monongahela River in Downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is the longest bridge spanning the Monongahela River and serves as the only cable suspension bridge across any of Pittsburgh's three rivers. The bridge was renamed on Labor Day 2007 for Philip Murray, the first president of the United Steelworkers of America.

The bridge was built in 1931 and connects South Tenth Street on the South Side to Second Avenue and the Armstrong Tunnel under the Bluff. A staircase leads from the northern terminus of the bridge up to the campus of Duquesne University on the Bluff. In 2015, the bridge was one of 3 bridges to have bike specific lanes installed.

The earliest proposal for a bridge near the site was to construct a toll bridge at Denman Street (now 12th Street). The company to build it was incorporated as the Birmingham Bridge and Road Company in 1837, and also had license to construct a road extending to the Monongahela and Coal Hill Turnpike (modern day Arlington Avenue and William Street). The project languished for many years, until the company was reincorporated as the Birmingham and Pittsburg Bridge Company in 1853, having fully abandoned plans to construct a road extending from the bridge. The site of the bridge was also changed to 10th Street. The bridge was constructed as a covered wooden structure.

This bridge was bought by the city in 1896. Having been antiquated for some time, the bridge was reconstructed as with a Pratt Truss structure. The bridge was reconstructed in 1931 as a suspension bridge.

Pittsburgh is a city in the state of Pennsylvania in the United States and the county seat of Allegheny County. An estimated population of about 300,286 residents live within the city limits as of 2019, making it the 66th-largest city in the U.S. and the second-most populous city in Pennsylvania, behind Philadelphia. The Pittsburgh metropolitan area is the anchor of Western Pennsylvania; its population of 2.32 million is the largest in both the Ohio Valley and Appalachia, the second-largest in Pennsylvania, and the 27th-largest in the U.S.

Pittsburgh is located in the southwest of the state, at the confluence of the Allegheny River and the Monongahela River, forming the Ohio River. Pittsburgh is known both as the Steel City for its more than 300 steel-related businesses and as the City of Bridges for its 446 bridges. The city features 30 skyscrapers, two inclined railways, a pre-revolutionary fortification and the Point State Park at the confluence of the rivers. The city developed as a vital link of the Atlantic coast and Midwest, as the mineral-rich Allegheny Mountains led to the region being contested by the French and British empires, Virginians, Whiskey Rebels, and Civil War raiders.

Aside from steel, Pittsburgh has led in the manufacturing of other important materials — aluminum and glass — and in the petroleum industry. Additionally, it is a leader in computing, electronics, and the automotive industry. For part of the 20th century, Pittsburgh was behind only New York City and Chicago in corporate headquarters employment; it had the most U.S. stockholders per capita. Deindustrialization in the 1970s and 1980s laid off area blue-collar workers as steel and other heavy industries declined, and thousands of downtown white-collar workers also lost jobs when several Pittsburgh-based companies moved out. The population dropped from a peak of 675,000 in 1950 to 370,000 in 1990. However, this rich industrial history left the area with renowned museums, medical centers, parks, research centers, and a diverse cultural district.

After the deindustrialization of the mid-20th century, Pittsburgh has transformed into a hub for the health care, education, and technology industries. Pittsburgh is a leader in the health care sector as the home to large medical providers such as University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). The area is home to 68 colleges and universities, including research and development leaders Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. Google, Apple Inc., Bosch, Facebook, Uber, Nokia, Autodesk, Amazon, Microsoft and IBM are among 1,600 technology firms generating $20.7 billion in annual Pittsburgh payrolls. The area has served as the long-time federal agency headquarters for cyber defense, software engineering, robotics, energy research and the nuclear navy. The nation's eighth-largest bank, eight Fortune 500 companies, and six of the top 300 U.S. law firms make their global headquarters in the area, while RAND Corporation (RAND), BNY Mellon, Nova, FedEx, Bayer, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have regional bases that helped Pittsburgh become the sixth-best area for U.S. job growth.
