കുംഭകോണം | Kumbakonam, is a town and a special grade municipality in the Thanjavur district. It is located 40 km (25 mi) from Thanjavur and 273 km (170 mi) from Chennai. Kumbakonam is known as a temple city due to the prevalence of a number of temples here and is noted for its Mahamaham festival which attracts people from all over the country.
Kumbakonam dates back to the Sangam period and was ruled by the Early Cholas, Pallavas, Medieval Cholas, Later Cholas, Pandyas, the Vijayanagara Empire, Madurai Nayaks, Thanjavur Nayaks and the Thanjavur Marathas. It rose to be a prominent town between the 7th and 9th centuries AD, when it served as a capital of the Medieval Cholas. The town reached the zenith of its prosperity during the British Raj when it was a prominent centre of European education and Hindu culture; and it acquired the cultural name, the Cambridge of South India. In 1866, Kumbakonam was officially constituted as a municipality, which today comprises 45 wards, making it the largest municipality and second largest local civil body in Thanjavur district.

The Nadaswaram is a highly complex and ancient musical instrument, dating back to the 13th century in its present form. Nadaswarams are very important in the cultures of many societies in the south of India, and are played widely in their weddings, temples and festivals. Making the Nadaswaram is a very skilled and sophisticated process; traditionalists execute it entirely by hand. Narasinganpettai is home to some of the finest makers of the instrument, and families here have been with the art for several generations.
Aduthurai , also known as Maruthuvakudi is a small panchayat town situated in the Thanjavur District in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Maruthuvakudi's major attraction is the Ten Kurangaaduturai Temple, which is believed to be the place where Sugreeva worshiped Lord Shiva. This highly revered shivasthalam is one of two Kurangaaduturai temples in Aduthurai, located south of the Cauvery River. It is the sub urban region of business city of Kumbakonam.
The Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute is located in Aduthurai. The research station was first established at Manganallur in 1912, and was shifted to Aduthurai in 1922. In 1962 it was renamed the Regional Research Institute. In 1981, after 19 years of successful operation, it changed its name again to Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute, or TRRI, and was elevated to Directorate of Rice Research Lead Centre in 1985.
The institute occupies around 64 hectares and produces various high-quality breeds of rice and cane sugar. The institute's main focus is on promoting short-term cultivation. Some noteworthy breeds developed here are Aduthurai 32 (ADT-32) and Aduthurai 36 (ADT-36).
Notable places near Aduthurai Many pilgrims visit the temples located near Aduthurai each year. Temples in the Aduthurai area include the Sooriyanaar Koil-sun, Thirumangalakudi-Mangambihai Oppliappan koil-Perumal, Swamimalai-Murugan, Thirunageswarar-Raghu, and Kanajanoor-sukran temples.
The village name Viswanathapuram is named after Lord Viswanathar, one of the names of Shiva, and contains the Vishalatchi Amman temple. The connection by marriage between Viswanathar and Vishalatchi (another name for Shiva's consort Parvati) is treated as historical, and this site is locally considered parallel with the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Vishalakshi Temple in Varanasi. A local saying expresses this: Kaasiyin veesam viswanathapuram, that is, One part of holy Varanasi is Viswanathapuram.

1) Kasi Vishvanathar temple
Kasi Vishvanathar temple in Kumbakonam is situated close to the Mahamaham tank with the principal deity being Kasi Viswanathar and his consort Visalakshi or Parvati. What fascinates you in the temple is the small lingam, which is believed to have been worshiped by Ram and Lakshman on their way to Lanka, and said to have acquired Rudraksham which helped them kill the demon king Ravana. The idol is believed to have been growing with ages. February-March is the most important festival here. The present masonry structure was built during the 16th century.
2) Mahamaham Tank
Mahamaham Tank is a huge temple tank located in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India. It is considered to be the foremost and one of the largest temple tanks in Tamil Nadu. The Masimaham festival held in the tank has 100,000 visitors and the 12-year Mahamaham festival has close to 2 million visitors.
3) Arulmigu Abimukeswara Swami Temple
Abimukeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva located in Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, India. The temple is one of 12 Shiva temples connected with the Mahamaham festival, which takes place in Kumbakonam every 12 years.
4) Nageswaran Temple Nageswaran Temple is dedicated to Shiva in the guise of serpent king Nagaraja. Aditya Chola constructed this in the 12th century and stands as a fascinating structure that depicts the prowess of the Chola dynasty in architecture and astronomy. The temple is also known by the name Surya Kottam as sunlight enters the temple only during the months of April and May.
