(PD질문)” “약 두 시간 정도 나갑니다” 호수는 주민들의 삶터다. 하지만 가뭄 때문에 어획량이 줄어 걱정이 많다. 그래도 호수는 주민들의 희망을 저버리진 않는가 보다. 소년이 직접 잡은 생선을 보여주며 자랑한다. 크기가 어마어마하다. 잡은 생선은 그 자리에서 비늘을 벗겨 말린 후 판매한다. 카세니이는 마을 주민이 천명도 안되는 전형적인 어촌이다. 마을에서는 점심준비가 한창이다. 생선조림은 우리의 김치처럼 늘 밥상에 오른다. 우리나라 호떡과 비슷한 이 부침개는 바나나와 밀가루를 혼합해 만든 것으로 이름은 ‘짜파티’다. 나는 도미와 비슷한 텔레피아 3마리를 우리 돈 5천원에 사서 인근 식당에 튀겨 달라고 부탁했다. 맛있는 소리가 귀를 자극한다. “일단 튀김 생선 맛을 한번 보시면 더 달라고 계속 저를 괴롭힐 것입니다” 회나 구이로만 먹던 생선을 통째로 튀긴 맛은 과연 어떨까. 상상이 되지 않았다. 맛있는 건 나눠먹으면 더 맛있는 법. 생선 맛은 기가 막혔다. 더 먹고 싶은 마음이 굴뚝같았지만 오래돼 보이는 튀김 기름이 식욕을 눌렀다. 어부에게는 그물이 무기다. 전쟁터에 나가기 전 총을 손보는 병사처럼 이들은 매일 그물을 관리한다. 욕심을 허락하지 않는 자연. 자연에 순응해 살아가는 사람들. 이들은 만선을 기대하지도 않는다. 다만 호수가 내어주는 대로 받아들일 뿐이다.

The Rest of the Uganda Visit (November 2017)
It was such an amazing, life changing experience visiting Luuka, Uganda. Saying goodbye was like leaving a piece of my heart there. I haven't cried so hard leaving a place and a people as I did (hiding, so the children wouldn't know) as I did there. It truly felt like heartbreak. I hope to return someday. Here is the rest of the footage I got for that part of the trip. I would have gotten more had I a place to charge my camera while staying there. Charging things is challenging there (unless you stay in a westernized hotel or something). Next time I will remember to bring solar battery packs. :)
