A Walkthrough Of the Elmina Castle - West African Slave Trade History, Ghana

A walk through Elmina Castle!

This was the second fort / castle we visited in Ghana that was part of the West African slave trade. All of these castles and forts along the coast have one thing in common, the door of no return. Through the door, people left their homes and never returned until they boarded a boat that took them, against their will, to the Americas.

Walking through Elmina Castle is extremely haunting and makes you feel so upset, even more so when you hear the story.

If you're in Ghana and only want to visit one slave trade castle, I would recommend going to Elmina. The one in Cape Coast is very, very touristy.

Akosombo Dam Of Eastern Region In Ghana - Changing a Landscape in Africa

Before we left the Volta Region of Ghana, we wanted to see one last thing, the famous Akosombo Dam. A huge mega project which transformed the enter Eastern Region of Ghana. It's highly controversial, so we were kind of surprised that the dam company was actually giving tours.

All the conflict aside, it was a very interesting tour and we loved that we were able to get up close, walking on top of the dam wall. It was amazing to see on the one side the huge dam lake (which is visible from space) and on the other side the dam wall and the turbine, releasing water down to the valley.

We actually had planned to take an overnight ferry on the dam lake going up north, this is probably one of the most adventurous things you can do while visiting Ghana. But we ran out of time, not even 91 Days are enough to see all what Ghana has to offer.

We're going to be writing about the Akosombo Dam soon on our Ghana Travel Blog:

A VERY TOUCHING STORY OF OSU CASTLE

Osu Castle (also known as Fort Christiansborg or the Castle) is a castle located in Osu, Ghana on the coast of the Gulf of Guinea in Africa.

A substantial fort was built by Denmark-Norway in the 1660s, thereafter the fort changed ownership between Denmark-Norway, Portugal, the Akwamu, Britain, and finally post-Independence Ghana. Under Denmark–Norway control it was the capital of the Danish Gold Coast, and held and dispatched enslaved people overseas.

In 1902, Osu Castle became the seat of government in Ghana but this has now moved to Golden Jubilee House.

Boti falls in the Eastern region of Ghana

#BotiFalls #WaterFall #Koforidua #EasternRegion

Boti Falls is located just 17km North-east of Koforidua, the eastern regional capital. For those interested in how soon it takes to get there, it is just over 30 minutes drive from Koforidua and over 90 minutes from Accra depending on your means of transportation.

There are actually two falls at Boti: The upper falls and the lower falls. These are the main features of the Boti Falls (what has widely been talked about is the lower falls). The locals describe it as male and female (this description is for the lower falls only). When the volume of water is high especially during the rainy season, the two meet in what the local describe as ‘a mating ceremony’. This ceremony is ‘graced’ by the rainbow that is formed by the splashing water.

Safari in Mole National Park, Ghana Video

Our adventure begins in the Mole National Park in Ghana. While we go out on Safaris in the bush to see wild animals, little did we know that the animals would come to us when we least expected it?

Mole’s big draw is the Elephants and there is a very high chance you will see one, although the rangers never guarantee it. But you will also be able to see baboons, antelopes, crocodiles, warthogs and many many more.

Achimota Village (Northern Accra) - June 2010

This clip is of Legon West Road in the Achimota district of Accra. Particularly, I am driving throught the Christian Village, heading north from around the Achimota Golf Club to the western entrance of the University Of Ghana's Legon Campus.

This is an area of Accra that doesn't get seen on You Tube very much, and it is an area of the city that typifies the constrasts of the place. I really like this area of Accra, as the forest reserve really makes it feel like it's own little town.

Apologies for the dirty windscreen - it had rained heavily for several days before, and it must have been the only time that there was no squegee guy to be found during my travels for the day. When you need them, they are never there......

Kasoa new market, unbelievable#abizi #ghana #tv

Kasoa has territory in one of the 20 Metropolitan, Municipalities and Districts in the Central Region of Ghana Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly. It is the largest and fastest growing town and municipality. The city is situated along the Accra-Cape Coast Road and, approximately 36 kilometres (22 mi), by road, west of Kotoka International Airport, the International Airport that serves Ghana's capital city of Accra. approximately 28 kilometres (17 mi), by road, west of the central business district of the city of Accra. The coordinates of the town are:05 31 12N, 00 28 48W (Latitude:5.5200; Longitude:-0.4800).

The average elevation of Kasoa is 75 m above sea level.

#Abizi

Kasoa experiences a five-month dry season lasting from November through March. During the dry season, the northeast trade winds are prominent. The dry season is followed by a seven-month rainy season that lasts from April through October. During this rainy season, the southwest monsoon winds are most common. The rainy season is usually characterized by flooding, low crop yield, and financial strain for a large portion of Odupongkpehe/Kasoa's population.

Population[#Abizi]

Awutu Ofaakor are the indigenous to Odupongkpehe/Kasoa. Awutu, Akan and English are the most commonly spoken languages.Odupongkpehe/Kasoa is traditionally home to the Awutu tribe who belong to the guan ethnic group. Today, it is home to other ethnic groups such as Hausas, Gas, Akans, Ewes, Walas/Dagartis, Moshies, Basares and other smaller tribes. As of 2010, Odupongkpehe/ Kasoa's population was estimated to be 370,384 people.Ghana has experienced rapid population growth in the past three decades. The population growth directly affects /Odupongkpehe/Kasoa, and other peri-urban areas.Odupongkpehe/Kasoa is reported to be one of the fastest growing communities in West Africa.

This growth is revealed by an examination and comparison of /#Odupongkpehe/#Kasoa's population in 1970, 1984, 2000, and 2010. In 1970, Odupongkpehe/Kasoa had a population of 863. In 1984 the population was 2,597. In 2000 the population was 34,719. In 2010 the population grew to 69,384. Clearly, there has been an increase in the population size over the past 40 years. Comparing the change in population between the aforementioned dates proves the fact that the population is increasing at an increasing rate. From 1970-1984 the population increased by 1,734 people. Between 1884–2000, the population increased by 32,122 people. Lastly, from 2000–2010, the population increased by 34,665.[8] The net population growth between 1970 and 2010 is 68,521. This means that in the past 40 years, Odupongkpehe/Kasoa has multiplied by more than 79 times what it was in 1970. This close consideration of the population reported by the National Analytical Report quantitatively indicates just how fast the population of Odupongkpehe/Kasoa has been and is continuing to grow. Approximately 4 decades ago, Odupongkpehe/Kasoa was a rural community; it is now very rapidly urbanizing.[8]

Since 2000, the “spill-over effect” of the growing population of the Accra-Tema metropolitan area into smaller towns around the edges has contributed greatly to the rapid increase in the populations of towns, like Odupongkpehe/Kasoa.[8] Challenges associated with living in the overly crowded urban centers such as transportation and safe/affordable housing have influenced individuals working in the Urban centers to have their place of residence be in a nearby settlements—often peri-urban areas like Odupongkpehe/Kasoa—and commute into the urban center for work.[10]

The population growth of Odupongkpehe/Kasoa and its repercussions can be understood as the result of urban sprawl. Rural-Urban migration due to diminished economic opportunities in rural Ghana and migration to Accra has led to a huge urban sprawl, which is the spreading of an urban population into surrounding areas such as peri-urban Odupongkpehe/Kasoa. This sprawl has had very specific and identifiable effects on Odupongkpehe/Kasoa, due to the fact that the growth was spontaneous and unplanned.[11] This spontaneous growth imposed a large number of inhabitants on a town that did not have the infrastructure nor the established planning. Subsequently, the original name, Eshaapa has been subsumed by Odupongkpehe/Kasoa, a name bestowed by migrant settlers who have dominated the population. Odupongkpehe/Kasoa is finding ways to cope with issues that have arisen from the combination of a rapidly increasing population and infrastructure that was intended for a much smaller population size.#ghana #abizi #tv
