It's been a wild several days in Turkmenistan. In my opinion, this is (by a long shot) the world's most bizarre country.
In this video, I explain the 10 strangest things that I find about Turkmen culture -- from the thousands of white-marble buildings to the shockingly empty streets, a massive fire crater in the desert that hasn't stopped burning for 50 years, and the heavy censorship of the internet.
Turkmenistan is essentially the North Korea of Central Asia. Both the capital cities of Pyongyang and Ashgabat feel eerily similar when walking around. The only major difference is that the people of North Korea are oppressed, whereas the people of Turkmenistan seem to be warm, friendly, and hospitable.

The Museum of Ethnography and Local Lore of Turkmenistan of the State Museum of the State Cultural Center of Turkmenistan was opened in 2009 on May 18. The three-storey building adjoins the main building of the museum. On the first floor of the museum there is an exposition dedicated to the nature of Turkmenistan, on the second - ethnography of the Turkmen people.

Independence Day Parade Practice, Ashgabat, Turkmenistan
Shot in the runup to the Independence Day Parade in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, on October 27, 2010 as part of the 20th anniversary independence celebrations. Foreigners were not allowed anywhere near the actual parade on Independence Day, but for some reason the authorities did not mind my photographing and videotaping some of the parade practice sessions. I also took advantage of the chance to get some footage of the gold-domed Presidential Palace in the background. Photography of that building was strictly prohibited (as is the case with all government buildings in Ashgabat), but the authorities did not realize that it would be prominently displayed in the background of my video.
