The Bermuda Triangle is Hella Weird! Here's 10 Reasons Why

Get more Tips here!

The Bermuda Triangle is a mysterious place in the Atlantic Ocean that has boggled our minds for centuries. Christopher Columbus was the first to report erratic compass readings and a great flame of fire as he sailed through the region. Countless ships and aircraft have vanished while venturing inside it, and despite all that has been reported, there’s still so much information many people aren’t aware of.
Here are 10 bizarre facts about the Bermuda Triangle that might surprise you.

1. Governmental Denial
With thousands of people who’ve gone missing, you’d think the government would launch an investigation into what really goes on in one of the strangest regions of the ocean. But government officials and scientists don’t think there’s anything mysterious going on there at all.

2. Time Travel
In December of 1970, Pilot Bruce Gernon was traveling to Florida with his father and a business associate and took off from Andros, Bahamas. Once they flew closer to the triangle, they noticed a cloud hanging low over the ocean. As they got closer to the cloud, it grew bigger and began to engulf them. Inside, they described the cloud as dark with bright flashes of light. They radioed into the air traffic controllers, who located their plane in Palm Beach, Florida. Gernon had somehow managed to complete his 75-minute flight in just 47-minutes. To this day, he still can’t explain how they had managed to leap forward 100 miles.

3. Its Pacific Sister
The Bermuda Triangle may be unique, but rumor has it, the region has a sister that’s located in the Pacific Ocean. (62-miles off the coast of Tokyo) In the 1950s, a vessel with more than 700 sailors disappeared, and various ships and planes have also vanished in the area.

4. Its Weapon Test Area
The U.S. government set up a facility in the Bahamas that faces a deep, oceanic trench. The Atlantic Undersea Test & Evaluation Center – (AUTEC) is used by the U.S. Navy to test submarines and various weapons.

5. It Has Ties to Atlantis
No one’s quite sure whether Atlantis was an actual city or a mythical island. Those who do believe in its legend think the city was swallowed up by the Bermuda Triangle after the last Ice Age.

6. It’s Not Really a Triangle
Even though it’s commonly referred to as a triangle because of its points between Bermuda; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Miami Florida; it doesn’t have any official boundaries, as disappearances have happened in all of the surrounding areas including the center and on the perimeter.

7. Erratic Compass
In December 1945, a group of Navy bombers took off from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to conduct airfield tests. But their compasses began to malfunction, and the leader of the mission went severely off course. All five planes followed and eventually ran out of fuel and had no choice but to ditch at sea. The triangle is said to be one of the few places on Earth where a compass will point towards true north, misleading dozens of travelers.

8. Methane Gas
Methane gas is reportedly trapped thousands of feet below the Bermuda Triangle’s ocean floor. When the gas is released, it supposedly changes the buoyancy levels of the water, causing ships to sink almost instantly. The methane also has the ability to erupt and ignite passing aircraft. Many believe this explains the strange occurrences that have happened nearby.

9. It’s Not a Recognized Space
Even though the three points are well-known as the Bermuda Triangle, this area of the ocean isn’t found on any world maps, and the US Navy refers to it as open ocean. Although people refer to the triangle, it’s nothing more than imaginary lines.

10. It’s Massive
When you view the area on a map, it looks relatively small. But it covers approximately 500,000 square miles of ocean. It’s also insanely deep. Studies have shown that the floor of this particular section of the ocean is riddled with sloping mountains, deep craters, and never-ending ravines.

Which of these bizarre facts surprised you the most?

10 Things Not to Do in Bermuda

Get more Tips here!

Bermuda is an archipelago of 138 islands that are covered in pink, sandy beaches; specialty shopping; world-class cuisine; and beautiful golf courses. You might be eager to visit it, but take into account these 10 things NOT to do in Bermuda.

1. Don’t Try to Rent a Car
If you’re hoping you’ll be able to rent a car to zip around one of the islands, you’ll be out of luck. Bermudan law makes it illegal to operate a car without a Bermudan driver’s license.

2. Don’t Rent a Motorbike
If it’s your first time on one of these scooters, you might want to think it twice. Many local bus and taxi operators tend to exceed the speed limits on the roads, and they often switch lanes without any warning.

3. Don’t Forget to Try a Swizzle

This tasty concoction is made with Gosling’s Black Seal rum, Gosling’s Gold rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, grenadine, and Angostura bitters. A swizzle is then spun rapidly between your hands and inside the cocktail to give it a thick layer of frost.

4. Don’t Visit the Pink Sand Beaches

One of the most talked about attractions in Bermuda is its pink sand beaches. If you want to enjoy some peace and quiet on a less-hectic coastline, check out the quiet beach on Warwick Long Bay located on Bermuda’s South Shore instead.

5. Don’t Visit on a Tight Budget
You really shouldn’t expect to receive a discount on anything in Bermuda. Since everything has to be imported in, it’s all marked up to insanely high prices.

6. Don’t Touch the Portuguese Man of War
It’s known to float above the surface of the water. Below their purple bladders, they have polyps which contain long tentacles ranging from 30-150 feet long. They can inject venom, and in some cases, it can be fatal.

7. Don’t Stop by Royal Navy Dockyard
Adjacent to the cruise port, this area is full of expensive restaurants and pricey shops. However, if you travel just a few miles more, you’ll find more shops and restaurants that have decent prices.

8. Don’t Book a Budget Hotel
Many people advise visitors to stay at a bed and breakfast instead. The accommodations will be much cheaper, and if you’re traveling with a large group, a B&B will be less expensive per person.

9. Don’t Stay Off the Beaten Path
The islands are so spread out that it’s difficult to make your way from one end to the other. Far from the central locations, many buses stop infrequently, and a lot of the routes end around 7 PM every night. After that, there would only be expensive taxis.

10. Don’t Be Afraid of Sharks
There’s really no need to fear them. The two most common, Galapagos and Dusky sharks, don’t come very close to the shore. And, they’re relatively harmless. Bermuda is known for having a low amount of shark attacks.

What Bermuda is like

What Bermuda is like.

10 Things I Love About Bermuda

10 THINGS I LOVE ABOUT BERMUDA
(Read this piece and see pictures on my blog missmjxoxo.com)

1. Monetary Exchange Rate. The Bermuda dollar is equal to the US dollar in value so it wasn't hard figuring out how much change I should get back after every dollar I spent.

2. The Beaches. We visited Horseshoe Bay which is a long stretch of beach in itself, but you will find other beaches along the sandy path. We followed a pathway to Jobson's Cove which is like a natural swimming pool. Where the waters were rough on Horseshoe Bay, Jobson's Cove had calmer waters that didn't run too deep which made it great for my daughter and me who are both non-swimmers. Each beach boasts beautiful rock formations, not to mention pink sand and breathtakingly gorgeous shades of blue water. I also loved Shelly Bay, located in Hamilton Parish. Once again, with its calm, shallow waters, it was the perfect place for my daughter and me to enjoy. The beach was so serene and the waters looked like a bed of jewels sparkling in the sun.

3. Ginger Beer. Whether Goslings or Barritt's, Bermuda Ginger Beer is delicious especially served over ice and garnished with a cherry. I enjoyed a glass everywhere I went on the island, but my favorite was at LITT, Lost in the Triangle Seafood Restaurant and Lounge. If you're in Hamilton be sure to stop by LITT for their thirst quenching glass of Ginger Beer. They also serve delicious food and their music selection is perfect for those who love good tunes.

4. The People. New York is probably not the friendliest city so to have random strangers in a foreign place greet you as though they've known you for years is definitely a pleasant experience. The people of Bermuda are warm and very friendly. They are always excited to help. They will answer all of your questions without an attitude. They seem to have a laid back and relaxed approach towards life and that’s a great way to live.

5. I Felt Safe. Living in the Bronx, you know to lock the doors behind you, but we stayed at an Airbnb in Ingams Vale in Spanish point where our doors and windows were open during our entire stay. I don't think Bermuda has a high crime rate and although you should take great precaution anywhere you go, Bermuda is one of the places I felt the safest visiting.

6. No Panhandlers. It felt so good visiting a place where no one is aggressively trying to sell me something on the beach or at the market. I respect that poverty often forces people to peddle goods, but while on vacation I don't like being harassed into buying a beaded necklace with a shark tooth pendant. Besides one guy slowly driving by us to sell us sea shells, we did not encounter heavy soliciting which made for a very relaxing time away.

7. Fish Cake. The fish cake is probably Bermuda's signature food along with wahoo bites. I didn't try the wahoo bites, but I had two variations of the fish cake - one on a cinnamon raisin roll with tartar sauce at the Dock Yard's Pastry Shop. The fish cake I had at CoCo Reef Resort definitely took the cake. The serving was too small to be called an entree, but the flavors are beyond magnificent! A fish cake on delicious crab bisque topped with a curry aioli. The Gods have spoken and the fish cake at CoCo Reef Resort’s Café Coco is truly a must have when visiting Bermuda.

8. A Fully Functioning Transit System. This is great for anyone on a budget or even the adventure who chooses to get around like the locals. You can take a bus to pretty much anywhere on the island. There is also a ferry that takes you from the Dockyard to Front Street in Hamilton. It's an easy system to follow and the buses run quite frequently. We rode the bus with the local school kids and it was a fun experience.

9. If public transportation isn't your thing, Taxis are Readily Available. It is very easy to catch a taxi around town. We got lost on two occasions and were able to easily hail a cab who took us to our destination safe and sound.

10. It's Only a 1 hour and 45 minute Flight from New York City. A short, straight flight via JetBlue will get you to this gorgeous island destination in no time. Even though it’s a popular cruise stop, a quick flight will get you there in no time!
