Top 10 Places to Visit in Central Asia and the Caucasus - Silk Road Travel Video (Documentary)

Welcome to Central Asia and the Caucasus, two beautiful regions on the crossroads of Asia and Europe. Often overlooked as travel destinations, the countries here provide some of the most rewarding and unique experiences. From stunning mountain landscapes of the Pamir Highway to historic monasteries in Armenia, from spectacular monuments along the ancient Silk Road to the modern skylines of Baku and Astana.

I traveled through these regions for four months in 2013, and in this short travel documentary I share with you my personal top 10 places to visit. The countries included in the video are Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We begin this journey in Samarkand, one of the most iconic cities along the ancient Silk Road. Located in Uzbekistan, it’s full of remarkable monuments but also provides a good introduction into daily life, especially in the lively farmers markets and bazaars. After Samarkand, we go to the Caucasus, to visit the fast developing capital city of Azerbaijan, Baku. Visiting the modern shopping malls and vibrant streets gives an interesting contrast with the narrow alleys of the old town here, and the wide promenade facing the Caspian Sea.

The Pamir Highway in Tajikistan is one of the most challenging, but also rewarding, travel destinations in Central Asia. It requires solid preparation, and many tourists decide to hire experienced travelers and guides for their trips. Back in Uzbekistan, the Fergana Valley takes you back in time, with charming villages, and an opportunity to view a traditional silk weaving factory.

Astana, now known as Nur-Sultan, is the modern capital city of Kazakhstan, and sometimes nicknamed as ‘Dubai of the Steppe’. It’s an interesting place to visit, and attracts people from across the country to work, study, and live. Back in the Caucasus, Tbilisi is steeped in history, and full of culture and charisma. The stunning Tsminda Sameba Cathedral is an important place of worship in the Georgia’s Orthodox Christian religion.

In Kyrgyzstan you will find some of the region’s most traditional ways of life, as nomadic shepherd families still move from villages to classic yurts. Traveling across the green pastures is a great way to experience a lifestyle that seems unusual in many societies these days. The capital city of Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, is a peculiar place on the list. Regarded as a secretive dictatorship, Turkmenistan is also one of the most mysterious and closed countries in the world. Keep in mind that people here face severe limitations in their daily lives.

Armenia is a beautiful destination in the Caucasus, and includes the friendly capital Armenia, and several stunning medieval monasteries. We finish this journey in Bukhara, another important stop on the historic Silk Road. There are many mosques and other landmarks to visit, but it’s also just a friendly town where you can eat some delicious food and soak up the relaxed atmosphere.

$10 Challenge in TASHKENT, UZBEKISTAN (Impossible to Spend $10 Here!)

In this Uzbekistan travel vlog I take you with me as I explore Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Uzbekistan’s capital and largest city. In this Tashkent Uzbekistan travel guide, I challenge myself to discover what I can get for $10 in my $10 challenge, which is equivalent to about 100,000 Uzbek Som. To start my Tashkent Uzbekistan travel vlog, I go to the Chorsu Bazaar, which is a local market with tons of fruits, vegetables, Uzbek food, breads, and more. No travel to Tashkent and Tashkent Uzbekistan city tour is complete without a trip to the Chorsu Bazaar. After wandering around the Chorsu Market in Tashkent Uzbekistan, I buy some fresh pomegranate juice for $1.5. After enjoying my fresh fruit juice, I walk over to the bakery section of the bazaar where I learn how the fresh Uzbek bread is made, which was one of my favorite experiences throughout my Tashkent travel vlog.

Next on my Tashkent Uzbekistan travel guide, I go to the Central Asian Plov Center to eat some delicious plov! Plov is a local Uzbek dish with rice, vegetables, eggs, meat and more, and it’s absolutely delicious. For the best plov you have to go to the Plov Center in Tashkent Uzbekistan, where you can also see how the plov is made. After trying horse meat for the first time and enjoying my Uzbek plov, the next stop on my Tashkent Uzbekistan vlog was to the Hazrat Imam complex, which is home to some of the most incredible architecture in Tashkent.

Next on my Tashkent travel guide, I decided to take the Tashkent subway as the metro system is extremely famous in Tashkent Uzbekistan. For about 14 cents you can buy a metro ticket to go anywhere in the entire city of Tashkent Uzbekistan. What makes the metro and subway system so special in Tashkent is the incredible design and architecture inside the metro stations. The colors, columns, mosaics and designs of the metro stations are absolutely remarkable in Tashkent Uzbekistan. When you travel to Tashkent Uzbekistan, taking the metro is a must!

Next on my Tashkent Uzbekistan 4k vlog, I visited the famous Hotel Uzbekistan, which is a Soviet style hotel with tons and tons of rooms and windows. Hotel Uzbekistan is an interesting place to walk around, and I even got a coffee at the hotel bar. Visiting Hotel Uzbekistan should definitely be on your Tashkent travel guide. Next on my Tashkent Uzbekistan 4k travel guide, I went to a local bakery to try some Uzbek treats before ending the night on a pedestrian street in Tashkent where I indulged in a Turkish style ice cream.

I hope you enjoyed my Tashkent Uzbekistan travel vlog and found this Tashkent travel guide useful for your future trip!

DAY 1 - 00:35

00:41 - Secret Garden
Home-Cooked Vietnamese Restaurant is located on the rooftop of an old building in the centre of town.

01:03 - Cafe Apartments
A refurbished apartment building now houses several cafes and shops. It is a 9-story apartment with over 30 shops. In its early days, it used to house government workers and military personnel.

01:13 - Saigon Oi
Located on the 5th floor Cafe Apartments, this cafe has a minimalist interior and large windows with views of the walking street — great for people watching!

01:24 - Saigon Sky Deck
Saigon Sky Deck is also known as Bitexcon Financial Tower. The design of Bitexcon Financial Tower was inspired by a lotus, Vietnam’s national flower!
For unobstructed views of Ho Chi Minh, head up to Saigon Skydeck. It’s located on the 49th floor of the Bitexcon Financial Tower and has informative touch screens where you can learn about the city’s landmarks like the Sai Gon Central Post Office.

01:42 - Golde Water Puppet Show
The theme showcases the beauty of ancient Vietnam and its mythologies. The show is in the Vietnamese language but you could still
grasp and enjoy the show!

02:00 - Nam Giao
This restaurant features authentic Hue, the ancient capital food. Most types of Hue delicacies include steamed pork served with rice paper and fresh herbs, Banh bao and Banh bot.

DAY 2 - 02:05

02:18 - Cu Chi Tunnels
It is a 250km-long network of tunnels, used by Viet Cong troops (pro-communists in Southern Vietnam) during the Vietnam War to combat American soldiers!
The Americans had more advanced technology, so the Vietnamese had to move underground to evade aerial bombing.

03:10 - Mekong River Delta
It is a quiet and calming river tour, more than half of Vietnam’s rice & fish comes from the Delta Region. Cruise along My Tho River (Mekong Delta) to see the Dragon, Unicorn, Phoenix, and Tortoise Islands.

03:37 - 200 Market
200 Market in district four came highly recommended by our Vietnamese guide. We arrived at a chaotic intersection of street food stalls — motorcycles constantly weaving through the crowds, hawkers barking out orders. Be warned — it’s not catered to tourists, so menus are only in Vietnamese. Despite this, 200 Market turned out to be one of our favourite street food experiences in Ho Chi Minh!

DAY 3 - 4:00

04:00 - Ben Thanh Market
Ben Thanh Market is the city’s most well-known market, located centrally in the heart of district one. It’s a touristy spot, but still worth a visit if it’s your first time in Ho Chi Minh. You’ll find all sorts of things here — clothes, spices, souvenirs, and a section dedicated to local food.

04:23 - Central Post Office
One of the most oldest and iconic buildings in Ho Chi Minh City.
This structure represents a good blend of European architecture and Asian decorations.

04:36 - Notre-Dame Cathedral

04:43 - Ho Chi Minh City Book Street
Located right in the centre of Ho Chi Minh City, a book road named Nguyen Van Binh book street stretches 100 meters from Hai Ba Tung street to Notre Dame Cathedral. A perfect place for book lovers and people who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Ho Chi Minh City.

05:00 - Little Hanoi
Hidden gem cafe is known for its traditional Vietnamese egg coffee.

05:20 - Banh Mi Ba Huynh
The best food spot and number one best-rated Bahn Mi in Ho Chi Minh City.
