The Republic of Tatarstan, or simply Tatarstan, is a republic of Russia located in Eastern Europe. It is a part of the Volga Federal District and its capital and largest city is Kazan, one of the most important cultural centres of Russia.
The republic borders Kirov, Ulyanovsk, Samara, and Orenburg Oblasts, the Mari El, Udmurt, and Chuvash Republics, and the Republic of Bashkortostan. The area of the republic is 68,000 square kilometres (26,000 sq mi). The unofficial Tatarstan motto is Bez Buldırabız! (We can!). As of the 2010 Census, the population of Tatarstan was 3,786,488.
Islam is the most common faith in Tatarstan, as, 53.8% of the estimated 3.8 million population is Muslim while the remaining population is mostly Russian Orthodox Christian and non-religious.
Tatarstan is one of the most economically developed regions of Russia. The republic is highly industrialized and ranks second to Samara Oblast in terms of industrial production per km2.in 2017 Tatarstan's GDP per capita was $10,000, with total GDP at about $35 billion.
There are three UNESCO world heritage sites in Tatarstan—Kazan Kremlin, Bulgarian State Museum-Reserve, and Assumption Cathedral and Monastery of the town-island of Sviyazhsk.
The republic has vast experience in the organization of high-tech production. Tatarstan is home to a number of flagship projects such as Tatneft (listed in the Top 5 of Russian oil companies), chemical and petrochemical holding TAIF, oil refinery TANECO, one of the largest petrochemical companies in Europe Nizhnekamskneftekhim, Russia's largest trucks manufacturer KAMAZ, Kazan Helicopters, Zelenodolsk Shipbuilding Plant named after A. M. Gorky, and many others. A lot of things that make Russia modern and competitive are made in Tatarstan.
Kazan has an official status of Russia's sports capital. The city has almost all the required infrastructure for hosting large-scale events like summer Olympics. Kazan has hosted multiple international sports competitions like the Universiade, the World Aquatics Championship, the FIFA Confederations Cup and the FIFA World Cup.
