Follow DW’s Lukas Stege to Wuppertal in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

DW Travel Guide Lukas Stege shows you the famous suspension railway in Wuppertal, a spectacular landmark in this city in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Wuppertal was once the center of the German textile industry. And philosopher Friedrich Engels, known as one of the founders of Marxism, lived here. In the video you’ll find out why the Engels monument is very popular with Chinese tourists.
Lukas’s climbing session in the hilly Bergisches Land region around Wuppertal is a real highlight. In spite of his fear of heights, he tries to climb up Müngstener Brücke, Germany’s highest railway bridge. It’s breathtaking!

Consider this as a teaser ;)

North Rhine-Westphalia is a federal state of Germany, located in the West of the country. It is the most densely populated region in Germany, with a population of 17.9 million people. The region was formed in 1946 from the Prussian province of Westphalia and the northern part of their own province of the Rhine, later the Lippe region was added to them.
The center of the earth can be called the Rhine-Ruhr region, which is formed from the large cities of Düsseldorf, Cologne and the industrial Ruhr region, which is important for Germany.

Capital
Despite the fact that Cologne is the largest cultural center and the abode of industrial facilities, Düsseldorf became the capital of the region after the unification of the lands.

Nature
The nature of the region is quite typical for Europe. In connection with the environmental policy pursued since the 60s of the last century, two thirds of the region's area is occupied by fields, meadows and forests. Despite the fact that life is teeming in large cities, silence, tranquility and fresh air with beautiful landscapes can be easily found when you leave the metropolis. There are 14 nature reserves on the earth.

Main cities: Cologne, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Essen
Cologne is the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is the third largest city in the country. Its agglomeration is home to two million inhabitants. Like any large city, its inhabitants include people of different nationalities, however, more than 80% of the population are Germans. Thus, the city is great for getting to know German culture and the traditional way of the country. A visitor, even with a high level of knowledge of the language, will have to strain himself to make out the speech of a local resident on the move, because in Cologne they speak their own dialect. By the way, Cologne is the birthplace of cologne. Translated eau de Cologne - Cologne water.
Düsseldorf is famous primarily for its economy. Many banks and exchanges are concentrated on the territory of the state capital, and the Rhine harbors make a great contribution to trade and shipping. The city is also famous for its cultural life, because it is the center of artists, architects and sculptors, and the theaters and opera of Düsseldorf are appreciated among art lovers.
Dortmund is a city with a special flavor, acquired back in the Middle Ages. It is located on the banks of the Lippe River, in a colorful valley. On the territory of Dortmund you can find a considerable number of parks, botanical gardens and small squares.
Essen is located in the heart of the Ruhr region in the northwestern part of Germany. The city is considered the center of German industry and education. Essen is famous for its diversity of nationalities living on its territory, which is also reflected in gastronomy. It is in this city that you can find a lot of restaurants with different cuisines, which will help you not only get acquainted with the national cuisine of Germany, but also try something exotic. Restaurants, bars and shops are located on Kettwiger Strasse, because the city is the commercial center of the region.

What to watch?
In the Eifel National Park, on the territory of more than 10 thousand hectares, 900 species of plants and animals that are part of the Red Book live and are protected.
On November 11 of each year at 11:11 am local time, the largest carnival in Cologne starts. Loud music, carnival costumes, rivers of foamy drinks and shouts of “Kölle Alaaf!” - all components of mass celebrations.
Be sure to visit a restaurant serving traditional Westphalian dishes at least once. The most famous of them are Westphalian sausages.

Attractions
The sights of the region are located mainly in the historical centers of cities. Here is just a small part:
In Bonn, you can visit the house where Ludwig van Beethoven was born;
In Cologne you can find one of the most visited sights in Germany - Cologne Cathedral of the 13th century;
To the west of Münster, you can look at Hülshoff Castle, the home of famous Westphalian aristocrats. An interesting fact is that earlier the portrait of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff adorned the banknote of 20 marks.
