Amazing Ancient City Near Yangon | Twante
Amazing Ancient City Near Yangon | Twante
Twante Township also Twantay Township is a township in the Yangon Region of Burma (Myanmar). It is located west across the Hlaing River from the city of Yangon. The principal town and administrative seat is Twante. The township is home to the Shwesandaw Pagoda and it is believed to contain strands of hair from the head of Gautama, and its annual pagoda festival is held on Burmese New Year. The longest man made canal in Myanmar is Twante canal and it is also a shortcut waterway to Ayawaddy river to Yangon river which divides Twante Township with its length of 35 km and there is one bridge that spans the canal is called Twante bridge. Baungdawgyoke Monastery in Twante Township is famous as there are pagodas including the replica of Mahabodhi Temple.
The Twente Canal is a canal that connects the Irrawaddy River and the Yangon river in Myanmar. The 35 km (22 mi) canal is a heavily used short cut between the city of Yangon and the Irrawaddy Division. The canal is named after the town of Twante, located near the canal's mid-way point. The canal was the quickest route from Yangon to the Irrawaddy Delta until the 1990s when roads between Yangon and the Irrawaddy Division became usable year round. The canal is still heavily used.
Due to the lack of regular maintenance, the canal has become silted and narrower over the years. In 2010, the mouth of the canal was widened by 600 feet (180 m). However, plans to put in concrete embankments were yet to be carried out, and the navigation problems still remain. Twante Bridge is only bridge that spans the Twante Canal.
The construction work on Twante Canal began in 1903 during the British colonial rule. The canal was completed in 1915. The Twante Canal shortened the distance by the Kanaungto creek between Yangon and the Irrawaddy river. The Irrawaddy Flotilla Company, Ltd., which handled nearly all inland carrier traffic in British Burma, ran daily services from Yangon to the Irrawaddy delta and Upper Burma. In 1935, the canal was widened and deepened to allow for the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company's large steamers to Mandalay. Previously larger steam ships had to go out the Yangon river and up one of the larger mouths of the Irrawaddy.

Biking tour starts from Yangon Strand Road, passing markets, exploring riverside villages, Chu Chu plastic recycle souvenir shop in Dala, biking through countryside, paddy fields, beautiful lakes, village school, along the famous Twante Canal and visit to friends' home in Dala. Information on How to get to Dalah, Myanmar, by: www.AdventuresInWanderland.NET
How to Get to Dalah (Dala):
You have to go to the jetty on Pansodan Street, where you’ll be ushered to the tourist area (to the left just as you enter) so you can pay 4000K (roundtrip) as a tourist, instead of the 100K the locals pay. You do get a bottle of water with that 🙂
TIP: Take the ferry at sunset for beautiful views of Yangon.
You can see my detailed blog post about Dalah here, on my website,

Myanmar, Around Yangon
Yangon is a small yet busy capital city and as such has the workings of government within its boundaries. Situated on the River Yangon, it has a flourishing port, but the most spectacular sights are the Buddhist temples, pagodas and stupas. Arriving by air, the visitor will see golden domes dotting the thick greenery of the outlying areas of the city. Set on Singuttara Hill, is the most holy of all these shrines, and the place every visitor must see -- The Shwedagon Pagoda.

Yangon Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Yangon in Myanmar.
Yangon is a river city and the capital of Myanmar. A country surrounded by India, China, Laos and Thailand with a fascinating mêlée of tribes and cultures plus a tranquil harmony of churches, pagodas, Hindu temples and mosques. Here, contrast is all, and that makes Yangon unique! The Chaukhtatkyi Pagoda contains one of the largest prone Buddha statues in the world. Its length makes up for its lack of artistry as it is seventy metres long. Over six hundred monks live in the adjoining monastery that was founded in 1907 for the study of Buddhist scripts that are known as ‘Palikanums’. Three seasons determine the climate of this subtropical country: the cool of winter, the heat of summer and the monsoons when it rains for most of the afternoon and entire regions are flooded. But then follows the lush green sight of endless paddy fields. In Yangon the early morning is the best time to travel to the nearby city of Bago which was once the capital of the Second Burmese Realm. It was thought by Europeans to be the most magnificent city in the East, a fact highlighted by its many splendid monuments. The city of Yangon is like travelling back in time to the colonial days of British Rangoon and hopefully this fascinating city will continue to be a golden fairy tale behind a tantalising bamboo curtain!

SHWEDAGON PAGODA | DAY IN YANGON | VLOG 48
We arrived in Myanmar. We had done all the research we could - what to expect, cash to carry, areas to stay and what to do and see, but nothing could prepare us for Yangon. We instantly fell in love. The city is big, the streets are dirty and the people are very warm and kind. Street eats were cheap and easy to come by - there was never a 10 metres span without something delicious sitting over an open flame (yes, everything was still prepared over open flames, from your fresh seafood to naan bread to boiling water for cups of coffee) plastic tables and chairs set up over drains and dirt sidewalks surrounded in friends, family, young and old sharing a meal or a cup of tea, there was so many smiles and the sound of laughter and chatter it was infectious.
We ate well, we were very impressed with the foods - what we could only call a mish mash of food culture but with a personal twist. Our favourites - whatever was in that red bowl - the noodles with the chilli with the fresh vegetables, the Shan Noodle soup, and some of the freshest, tastiest vegetable produce we have ever had.
A day spent meandering the city on foot, finding markets and street stalls, so many pagodas - of course being the magical space of the Shwedagon Pagoda, where locals outnumbered the tourists 5-1. The giant reclining Buddha, a last minute stop a little bit out of Downtown was worth the $2 in a cab ride to see.
We loved our time here, wish we could have had more - we disagree that everything we had read was 'spend one or two days tops, then leave' we wish we had of had at least a couple more.
Onwards to Bagan, quick 9 hour bus ride, make sure you take snow gear, these buses are set to a frozen 13 degrees, no matter the bus or the day you will freeze your butt off!
See you in Bagan xx

A very brief history on Burma, its worth digging around.
Make sure you read this too! Incredibly important when talking money in Myanmar! We were actually rejected a couple of times with USD that was ever so so slightly creased! They aint kidding when they say they only except the most pristine notes, so when you are getting funds, ask for bills for Myanmar - then you need to carry them perfectly flat, make sure there are not smudges or marks... this is very real (we saw a guy at the airport with $500 USD, each of them had a very small dog ear on one corner - straight up rejected... you don't want to see an American angry over rejected USD...
