Morning Room On Visit To Fyvie Castle Aberdeenshire Scotland
Tour Scotland travel video, with Scottish music, of the morning room on visit to Fyvie Castle near Turriff in Aberdeenshire. In 1733 the Crown sold Fyvie to William Gordon, 2nd Earl of Aberdeen who required another seat for his third wife Anne and her children because Haddo House was due to be inherited by his son by his second wife. From 1770 to 1840 Anne’s son William Gordon carried out sweeping changes. Fyvie remained in various lines of the Gordon family until Sir Maurice Duff Gordon, a notorious spendthrift, had to sell the castle and it’s contents in 1889. The term “ morning room ” came about during the early 1800s, to designate a space used mainly in the morning. These rooms

Fyvie Castle With Music On History Visit Near Turriff Aberdeenshire Scotland
Tour Scotland 4K travel video, with Scottish music, of the exterior and interior of castle on ancestry, genealogy, family history visit to Fyvie near Turriff in Aberdeenshire. The castle is a magnificent example of Scottish Baronial or Scots Baronial architecture. Buildings in the Scots Baronial style are characterised by elaborate rooflines embellished with conical roofs, tourelles, and battlements with machicolations, often with an asymmetric plan. Popular during the fashion for Romanticism and the Picturesque, Scots Baronial architecture was equivalent to the Jacobethan Revival of 19th century England, and likewise revived the Late Gothic appearance of the fortified domestic architecture of the elites in the Late Middle Ages and the architecture of the Jacobean era. Among architects of the Scots Baronial style in the Victorian era were William Burn and David Bryce. The earliest parts of Fyvie Castle date from the 13th century, some sources claim it was built in 1211 by King William the Lion. Fyvie was the site of an open air court held by Robert the Bruce, and King Charles I lived there as a child. Following the Battle of Otterburn in 1390, it ceased to be a royal stronghold and instead fell into the possession of five successive families; Preston, Meldrum, Seton, Gordon and Leith, each of whom added a new tower to the castle. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.

New Slains Castle On Visit To Coast Of Aberdeenshire Scotland
Tour Scotland travel video of New Slains Castle on ancestry visit to Aberdeenshire. The 16th Century castle is thought to have inspired the Irish author, Bram Stoker's, Dracula. The Clan Hay were a powerful family in the area for generations, having possessed the lands of Slains since the 14th century. In 1453 Sir William Hay, the clan chief, was made Earl of Erroll by King James II. At this time the local seat of power was Old Slains Castle, near Collieston some five miles to the South West. Francis Hay, 9th Earl of Erroll, succeeded in 1585, and converted to Roman Catholicism. He conspired with other Catholic nobles, including the Earl of Huntly, with whom he joined in a brief rebellion in 1589. Erroll was declared a traitor in 1594, and Old Slains Castle was destroyed in October on the orders of King James VI. Earlier distinguished visitors to the castle include Samuel Johnson and James Boswell on their tour of the Highlands and Islands
