Penicuik is a town and former burgh in Midlothian, Scotland, lying on the west bank of the River North Esk. It lies on the A701 midway between Edinburgh and Peebles, east of the Pentland Hills. The town was developed as a planned village in 1770 by Sir James Clerk of Penicuik. It became a burgh in 1867. The town was well known for its paper mills, the last of which closed in 2004. More recently the town was home to the Edinburgh Crystal works. Penicuik has two secondary schools, Penicuik High School and Beeslack Community High School. Crystal FM is the Community Radio Station serving Penicuik & S W Midlothian on 107.4
The town's name is pronounced 'Pennycook' and is derived from Pen Y Cog, meaning Hill of the Cuckoo in the Old Brythonic language (also known as Ancient British and the forerunner of modern Welsh). Penicuik is Scotland's 50th largest town and the biggest settlement in Midlothian.
Near Penicuik is Glencorse Parish Kirk, which formed part of the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped (1886). Some of the streets nearby are named after characters in the novel and its sequel, Catriona (1893). Penicuik is home to the Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, garrisoned in Glencorse Barracks. Penicuik is twinned with the town of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue in France. The site of Penicuik was home to the paper mill established by Agnes Campbell in 1709. A monument in the churchyard reads 1737, Annabel Millar spouse to Thomas Rutherford Papermaker at Pennycuik.
Around 1770, the arrival of the Cowan family, and their expansion of the paper mill, led to the need for homes for their workers. The hamlet of Penicuik was expanded as a planned town (roughly based on Edinburgh's New Town) by Sir James Clerk of Penicuik, the builder of nearby Penicuik House, and by 1800 the population had risen to 1,700.
Penicuik was the site of a prison camp for French prisoners during the Napoleonic Wars (housed in the old range at Valleyfield Mill). The former camp is now the site of a housing development in Valleyfield. A monument dated 1830 by the River Esk commemorates the mortal remains of 309 prisoners of war who died 1811-14. It was erected by Alexander Cowan owner of the paper mill, whose house overlooked the burial site.
Penicuik hosted the inaugural Grand Match in curling, between the north and the south of Scotland, in 1847. This took place on the high pond on the estate of Penicuik House, not the low pond which is still used for curling on rare occasions. The town became a burgh in 1867. In the oldest part of Penicuik, surrounding the town centre and to the south of the former POW camp, crossing the river Esk is Pomathorn Bridge which was once a toll bridge and the main route between Edinburgh to the north and the Scottish Borders to the south. As such Penicuik has a number of ancient traveller's inns, including The Crown, and the Royal. Because of their location on such a busy caravan route, both these public houses advertise the patronage of many characters from Scottish 18th Century history, including alleged visits from Burke and Hare and Bonnie Prince Charlie.

It is West Lothian's county town, reflected in the county's alternative name of Linlithgowshire. An ancient town which lies south of its two most prominent landmarks: Linlithgow Palace and Linlithgow Loch, and north of the Union Canal. King James V was born in Linlithgow Palace in 1512.

TRANENT, SCOTLAND
Tranent is a town in East Lothian (formerly Haddingtonshire), in the south-east of Scotland. The town lies 6 miles from the boundary of Edinburgh, and 9.1 miles from the city centre. It lies beside the A1 road, the A1 runs through the parish splitting the parish from its associated villages and hamlets namely Meadowmill and the port of the parish Cockenzie. Tranent was formerly a major mining town, but now serves as a commuter town for Edinburgh.

History
The name is thought to be of Brythonic origin, possibly containing the elements Tre and Nant, meaning town over the stream Travernant.
Tranent was once an important mining town, and coal was first worked there in the thirteenth century by the monks of Newbattle Abbey who mined a nearby 2.5m / 7 ft thick coal deposit called the Great Seam.The town possesses the oldest coal-mining charter (1202–1218) in Great Britain, and the history of coal mining in Scotland is mirrored in the history of the coal heughs, mines and pits of Tranent. Tranent is now a commuter town supporting the south-east of Scotland and, more specifically, Edinburgh.
The Massacre of Tranent took place in 1797, when local people were killed by soldiers after a protest against conscription into the county militia under the Militia Act of 1797.One of the 12 victims, Jackie Crookston, is depicted on the memorial that commemorates the dead in Tranent's Civic Square.
In connection with the annual commemoration of the Battle of Prestonpans (originally called the Battle of Gladsmuir, and then renamed the Battle of Tranent, before many decades later being renamed the Battle of Prestonpans) there are plans to recreate a small portion of the Tranent to Cockenzie Waggonway which dates back to 1722.
There is a long history of settlement in Tranent, perhaps dating back to prehistory. There are several historic buildings in and around the town, including the ruins of the old parish church, parts of which date from the 11th century and which was demolished in 1797, while a few miles south-west of the town stands Fa'side Castle, sometimes known as Falside or Fawside, a fourteenth-century L-shaped tower house.
Isabella Begg née Burns, the youngest sister of Robert Burns, moved to Tranent from Ormiston with her family after her son William resigned his post as the schoolmaster. She supported her family with the help of her daughters Agnes and Isabella, working as dressmakers. In 1843 she moved to Bridge House in Alloway, South Ayrshire.
Industry
Coal was first mined in Tranent Parish when Robert de Quincy granted rights in the early-thirteenth century to the monks of Newbattle to mine at Prestoungrange, which was then part of that parish. Soon many wealthy families in the parish joined the rush to mine coal. Heughs (surface mines), were being cut throughout the area. Longniddry, St. Germains, Fa'side, Ormiston (much later town) and Elphinstone, all parts of old Tranent, had their collieries and for the next 750 years, the industry prospered. Other industries grew to employ increasing populations: distilleries, breweries, tanneries and metal implement works. Quarries opened providing stone for homes. Farming was modernised and mills opened to provide food. The nineteenth-century saw a slowdown in industrial growth and, gradually, industry centralised and moved to larger centres. The coal industry had peaked and the twentieth century brought about a slow, but terminal decline. The last large deep mine closed in 1961, then in 2000, the opencast mine at Blindwells closed.

EAST LINTON SCOTLAND | Scotland's Prettiest Town?
East Linton, Scotland. We travel to East Linton in East Lothian in Scotland, just a short drive from Edinburgh, and close to Dunbar and North Berwick!

East Linton is a small country town between Haddington and Dunbar in East Lothian.
The agricultural town of East Linton lies on the River Tyne, 22 miles east of Edinburgh. Its 16th century bridge over the Tyne gorge helped its growth until the arrival of the A1. You can take a seat in the square and watch the water in the fountain sparkle in the sun and splash over the cherubs or take a stroll down Mill Wynd to The Linn, the waterfall that gives East Linton its name.
Some buildings of special note are St Andrew's former church in the square with its neo - Romanesque frontage and its clock named Jessie. Preston Kirk is a very old church on Preston Road, the road which leads to Tyninghame, which has a fascinating graveyard complete with cast iron headstones.
A bit further down the road is Preston Mill, an unusually shaped old water mill now in the care of the National Trust for Scotland. East Linton is also home to Phantassie Doo'cot, a beehive shaped dovecot from the 16th century. There is also Smeaton Lake, which has a fine collection of different specimen trees around the lake plus geese and water fowl.
The Museum of Flight at East Fortune, home to over 50 vintage aircraft including a Spitfire, Tigermoth and Vulcan, as well as a Concorde, is just a stone’s throw away.
Some people say East Linton is Scotland's prettiest town and the best place to live in Scotland so we take a look around to see if that's true!
East Linton lies largely to the west of a bridge built in the 1500s over the River Tyne, but probably predates it by many centuries. A little over a mile to its south-west lies Hailes Castle, built in the 1200s, while on the edge of the village is the Parish Kirk of Traprain, which incorporates a chancel of similar age.
The bridging of the River Tyne secured East Linton's place as a staging post on the Great North Road. This is reflected in the rather good choice of hotels and pubs in the village, including the Bridgend Hotel set, not surprisingly, facing the end of the bridge.
The River Tyne proved ideal as a source of power for mills, a number of which were built along its banks through the village. Just to the north-east of East Linton is Preston Mill, a survivor dating back to the end of the 1500s. This is run by the National Trust for Scotland and is one of the oldest meal mills in Scotland with its machinery still in working order.
The railway came to East Linton in 1846. Today the East Coast Main Line is carried through the village at high level, bridging both the River Tyne and main village street. It comes as a surprise to see high speed trains passing feet away from the gable end of the pretty ivy-clad stone pharmacy in the village. East Linton originally had its own station, but this disappeared in 1960.
The Great North Road, the A1, has long bypassed East Linton, and the most recent incarnation of the road has no convenient junction for the village. The earlier bypass succeeded in keeping through traffic away from its narrow streets and even narrower bridge, and despite the arrangement of its successor the village remains a busy place in its own right. At its heart lies the village square, complete with an attractive gilt fountain. From here roads lead to the River Tyne bridge, as well as north-east towards Prestonkirk and north towards North Berwick.

This 15th-Century Castle is Where Mary Queen of Scots Spent Her Last Night of Freedom | Scotland 4K
First constructed in the 15th century, Fa'side castle was saved from ruin in the 1970s. It's hidden away on top of a hill in Tranent, East Lothian, which is near Edinburgh. The castle is said to have housed Mary Queen of Scots on her last night of freedom. The castle was burned by the English before the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh, which was fought nearby on 10 September 1547, suffocating or burning all those inside.
