Places to see in ( Musselburgh - UK )
Musselburgh is the largest settlement in East Lothian, Scotland, on the coast of the Firth of Forth, 6 miles east of Edinburgh city centre. The name Musselburgh is Old English in origin, with mussel referring to the shellfish, and burgh derived from the Old English for town.
Musselburgh was first settled by the Romans in the years following their invasion of Scotland in AD 80. They built a fort a little inland from the mouth of the River Esk, at Inveresk. They bridged the Esk downstream from the fort, and thus established the line of the main eastern approach to Scotland's capital for most of the next 2,000 years. The bridge built by the Romans outlasted them by many centuries. It was rebuilt on the original Roman foundations some time before 1300, and in 1597 it was rebuilt again, this time with a third arch added on the east side of the river. The Old Bridge is also known as the Roman Bridge and remains in use today by pedestrians. To its north is the New Bridge, designed by John Rennie the Elder and built in 1806. This in turn was considerably widened in 1925. The Battle of Pinkie Cleugh was fought south of Musselburgh.
Musselburgh is known as The Honest Toun, and celebrates this by the annual election of the Honest Lad and Lass. The town motto Honestas dates back to 1332, when the Regent of Scotland, Randolph, Earl of Moray, died in the burgh after a long illness during which he was devotedly cared for by the townsfolk. His successor offered to reward the people for their loyalty but they declined, saying they were only doing their duty. The new regent, the Earl of Mar, was impressed and said they were a set of honest men, hence Honest Toun.
The town and its population grew considerably throughout the latter half of the twentieth century, with major local authority and private housing developments on both the eastern and western outskirts. Before 1975, Musselburgh was part of Midlothian, not East Lothian. It became part of the East Lothian District following the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 and subsequently East Lothian unitary council area in 1996.
Musselburgh is served by two railway stations. Musselburgh railway station is in the west of the town, adjacent to Queen Margaret University and has regular Abellio ScotRail services from Edinburgh Waverley to North Berwick. It is a relatively new station, having opened in 1988. The other station serving the town is Wallyford railway station to the east of the town in the village of Wallyford, which opened in 1994. The town's original station was close to the town centre at the end of a short branch from Newhailes Junction. Passenger services from there ceased in 1964, and the line closed to all traffic in the early-1970s. The former railway line is now a road bypassing the Fisherrow area of the town.

Explore the Gems of Haddington: 5 Fascinating Attractions You Can't Miss
Hello and welcome to my channel where we explore chunks of Scottish history this episode will be full of it, thanks to the lovely people of this Scottish jewel called Haddington. Today I will show you 5 main places, that you can easily visit.
The first one is One of the two main streets in Haddington, Haddington’s High Street is an excellent place for Shopping, have to chat with locals, grabbing an ice cream or just enjoying a moment in this beautiful town. The history of this town was dating from the 6th century AD and it became part of Scotland in the 10th Century.
Second place to visit is stunning Lennoxlove house, that sits just on the outskirts of Haddington. Lennoxlove house is home of the duke of Hamilton built in the 14th century. Lennoxlove House is an intriguing mixture of time periods, with 18th-century Palladian and Victorian elegance blended with the earlier 14th-century tower house. The house also acts as a showcase for one of Britain's great art collections, featuring portraits, fine furniture, and ceramics. Much of the collection was brought here from Hamilton Palace
St. Marys Parish Church
3rd gem of this beautiful town is ST. Mary's Parish Church and I can tell you, I was not expecting it to be full of exciting history. Thanks to Janet, a local volunteer I had a chance to film it for you. Thank you Janet appreciate it.
Just outside of St. Mary's Parish Church lies the historic Nungate Bridge – known for its majestic stone bricks and tranquil atmosphere.
This attraction is a stone’s throw from St Mary’s Church, and it’s a great place to stop, relax, and watch the swans and ducks of Haddington frolicking in the River Tyne. It was also the punishment site, as criminals would regularly be hanged from the bridge!
From its green, you’re treated to a memorable skyline of town churches and buildings and the complex history and outstanding architecture that make this bridge an attraction you must see while in Haddington.

Fife Coastal Route / Top 7 Attractions / Visit Scotland 🏴 #fife #scotlandroadtrip
With a total distance of 77 miles (124km), the Fife Coastal Route runs as you’d expect almost entirely along the coast. It takes in the historic Kingdom of Fife and rather neatly, it starts and ends on bridges crossing two of Scotland’s greatest rivers: the Firth of Forth and the Tay. The bridges over the Forth rank among some of the finest in the UK.
Charming cobbled streets tumble down to the miniature harbour, which is sheltered by cliffs and surrounded by historic fishing cottages. Crail is a historic fishing village on the East Neuk of Fife coast and is well worth a visit.
Only 90 minutes by car from Edinburgh and 10 miles south of St Andrews, the Home of Golf.
Crail is the most easterly of the line of coastal settlements along the south side of the East Neuk of Fife. Many would also say it is also the most attractive of them, though each has its own unique character. Crail is a wonderful place to visit at any time of year, though it's probably at its best on a bright day in Winter when you stand more chance of having it to yourself.
Anstruther is a charming fishing village in the East Neuk of Fife, popular with day-trippers and holidaymakers.
Located south of St Andrews, Anstruther is the largest in a string of pretty, old-fashioned fishing villages along the stretch of Fife coast known as the East Neuk.
Perhaps the top attraction is simply tucking into a quality fish supper from the Anstruther Fish Bar, which in recent years has won a number of awards including UK Fish and Chip Shop of the year. Enjoy the locally caught fish by the harbour as fishing boats land their catch.
In the 1790s, salt was Scotland’s third-largest export, after wool and fish. The ruins at St Monans saltworks, adjacent to the Fife Coastal Path, is a reminder of this industry that was once very important to the Scottish economy. The windmill at St Monans—the last remaining windmill in Fife—was used to pump sea water into the salt pans, which were then heated by local coal.
Elie is a popular seaside town in the East Neuk of Fife.
A picturesque seaside resort, Elie is gathered around a curve of golden sand. The harbour, established in the 16th century, is a popular with yachts and small pleasure craft while the surrounding bay is popular with windsurfers and bathers.
The town is also home to two fantastic golf courses. James Braid, celebrated golf course designer and five times winner of the British Open Golf Championship in the early 20th century was born in Elie.
Aberdour Silver Sands is one of the most popular and attractive beaches on the Fife coast.
Silver Sands offers the freshness and variety of the seaside as well as the peace and tranquillity of the countryside. The shore, in its charming setting, looks out to the islands of Inchmickery and Inchcolm, where there is a famous abbey.
Aberdour Silver Sands is a great place for a family day out, with a kids’ putting green and a bouncy castle in the summer.
Historic Culross is one of Scotland's most picturesque towns.
It is believed that Culross was founded by St Serf, and is located in the south west of Fife, overlooking the Firth of Forth.
Wandering around this charming town is about as close to stepping back in time to the 16th century as possible. The whitewashed, red-tiled buildings are well preserved, such as the Town House, where witches were tried and held while awaiting execution.

Gullane is a town on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth in East Lothian on the east coast of Scotland. There has been a church in the village since the ninth century. The ruins of the Old Church of St. Andrew built in the twelfth century can still be seen at the western entrance to the village; the church was abandoned after a series of sandstorms made it unusable, and Dirleton Parish Church took its place.
Gullane Bents, the village's award-winning beach, is backed by large sand dunes that in recent years have become rather overgrown by invasive shrubs like sea-buckthorn. Gullane is part of the John Muir Way, a long-distance footpath along the coast between Musselburgh and Dunglass.
The local population consists of many elderly people. Urbanisation has led to some recent housing developments, and Gullane is gaining popularity as a commuter village for nearby Edinburgh (some twenty miles away). Amenities include the village hall and a variety of shops including a chip shop, German bakery and sweet shop. There is a primary school, and local children attend secondary school five miles away in North Berwick. The Scottish Fire Service College was located on Gullane's Main Street.
Greywalls Hotel was built in 1901 to a design by Sir Edwin Lutyens; the gardens were designed by Gertrude Jekyll. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service formerly had their training school based at Gullane.
Gullane is the home of Muirfield which has hosted The Open Championship on numerous occasions, most recently in 2013. In addition to Muirfield, Gullane is the site of several other high-quality golf courses in the village and surrounding area. At the Gullane Golf Club, to which many local residents are members of, three interesting eighteen-hole links courses straddle a large grassed-over volcanic plug.
