Today we went to Joal-Fadiouth, the Seashell Island and cemetery in Senegal. The Island is made entirely of seashells.

No, it's not just covered in them. Fadeout is truly made of seashells. Clam shells to be exact.

More than 800 years ago, the claim harvesters started collecting all of the shells and over time built these 2 islands.

The main island holds 5000 residents. The other is home to their cemetery where Christians and Muslims rest side by side.

In fact, the religious make-up of Fadiouth is exactly opposite the rest of Senegal which is 90% Muslim. Fadeout is 90% Christian, mostly Catholic.

They all take pride in their shared religious tolerance and a total lack of conflict with these groups living side-by-side. They even share each others holidays.

That's one reason the cemetery is a point of pride.

And yes, the bodies are simply buried under shells. Christians in coffins, Muslims in shrouds, all beneath layers of seashells.

Definitely put Joal-Fadiouth on your itinerary when you come to Senegal. You won't regret it.

The Langue de Barbarie takes its name from an older name for the land of the Berbers. The Langue de Barbarie, a 600 km (370 mi) long stretch of sand from Nouadhibou in Mauritania to Saint-Louis, over a stretch of 25 km (16 mi) separates the lower Senegal River from the Atlantic Ocean. Its vegetation mainly consists of Filao trees, propagated to prevent soil erosion in sandy and salty soils.

National park of the ‘langue de barbarie’
This park, which is 20 square kilometres large, occupies the southern point of the Langue de Barbarie, the estuary of the Senegal river and part of the continent. It hosts thousands of water birds like cormorants, brushes, pink flamingos, pelicans, herons and ducks each year. Furthermore, that area of Saint Louis has one of the best hotels in the country; such as ‘Ocean et Savane’ and Zebra Bar Camping where one can experience the Atlantic Ocean, the river Senegal and some of the most beautiful views in the world.

Saly é uma área de resort à beira-mar na região de Thiès, na Petite Côte do Senegal, ao sul de Dakar. É o principal destino turístico de toda a África Ocidental e tem o status de comuna.

Driving on N2 Through Sebikotane, Thies, & Tivaouane En Route to Saint Louis, Senegal

I’m in a “sept place” taxi from Dakar to Saint-Louis, Senegal. We’re now starting on Route N2. Traveled on a modern multi-lane tollway east from Dakar but now on a two-lane regular highway. Passing through the town of Sebikotane.

5:00 p.m.: Just made a quick stop on the side of the road for some passengers to buy bags of oranges. The taxi was swarmed by orange vendors.

5:15 p.m.: Coming into the city of Thies. We make a left turn onto the VCN Bypass around Thies. Going north and then east to bypass the main part of the city to continue on N2.

5:28 p.m.: We are off the VCN Bypass and back on N2 continuing east-northeast on our way up to Saint-Louis.

5:48 p.m.: Coming into the outskirts of Tivaouane. Passed a gas station. I noticed the price was CFA 595 per liter, so that makes it $3.90 per gallon.

The high-quality ambience, the appealing gastronomic offerings, the numerous excursion options, swimming in the sea and getting enough sun convinced us and pushed the winter in Germany away from our minds. Daily entertainment programs and a variety of activities make the vacation very varied and West Africa is a newcomer to the tourist business, which gives many residents a job near the hotel.
