Best spots on Thakhek Loop in Laos 🇱🇦 #shorts
We did the Thakhek loop in 4 days / 3 nights and it was really amazing! ✨
⭐️ The landscapes along the route are beautiful and change a lot. Here is a small list of our favorite places on this loop:
First stop at Tham Nong Pa Fa, a small hut on the edge of a magnificent lake with locals fishing. We stayed 15 minutes watching them ☺️
Followed by the Xieng Liap Cave which we crossed on foot for a little adventure.
We then rode directly to our accommodation for the evening at Phosy garden Bungalow and admire the sunset over the lake with hundreds of dead trees in the water (it looks creepy but it's really cool !) 🌅
The next day we left for the Konglor cave: we made a first stop at the Dragon cave 🐉
Little cold spring bath to cool off: the spot is impressive, the water is so clear 😍
We then drove straight to reach our guesthouse at Konglor cave before nightfall.
The next morning at 9 am, we left for a 3 hour visit to the cave by electric motor boat, it was super quiet 🤫
We then took the road on our return to do the same route but in the opposite direction because the rest of the loop is of no interest and is borderline dangerous.
We had lunch at the restaurat of the dragon cave, a very nice little place 🌸 We continued on the road to enjoy the sunset over the lake again. This time we slept in the bedroom part of Phosy garden and not in the bungalows: the first night was very cold it was 6 degrees 🥶 So we had the luxury of sleeping in a room for 4€ more.
We finished the loop the next day by stopping at the Tham Nang Aen Cave which had no great interest except for being lit with LEDs.
Assessment:
⛽️ €12 gas
🛵 €14 rental of a semi-automatic scooter
🛣️ 600km traveled
⏱️ 12 hour drive

Thakhek Loop - Laos | 15 Things to Do | Travel video | DJI Mini 3 Pro & GoPro 12
In April 2024, I embarked on an incredible journey through the Thakhek Loop in Laos, completing the adventure in just 3 days. On the first day, I started in the city of Thakhek and continued my ride to Thafalang, Xieng Liap Cave, Tham Nang Ene Cave, Song Sa Waterfall, and the Orchid Path to Reservoir Viewpoint. That night, I stayed at the Sabaidee Guesthouse, where I was lucky to experience the vibrant Laos New Year celebration—an unforgettable night of festivities. On the first day, I covered around 110 km on my motorcycle.
The second day was a bit more relaxed, but I still managed to visit key attractions along the Thakhek Loop. I explored the Flooded Forest Viewpoint, Sandstone Buddha Rock Sculptures, Dragon Cave, Cool Pool, Kai Waterfalls, and the Scenic Overlook, covering approximately 170 km by the end of the day.
My third day began with a visit to the famous Konglor Cave, the highlight of the Thakhek Loop. I highly recommend exploring this breathtaking cave. Later, I visited the Limestone Forest before concluding my journey back in Thakhek, where I ended my adventure at the Phathat Sikhottabong Stupa. On this final day, I rode about 200 km.
CZ:

It’s also one of the regions longest fully traversable cave rivers; the distance from the downstream to upstream entrance is 7.5 km. The traverse is completed in motorised, flat bottomed, long tail boats (similar to the Thai long tails but with a shallower draft).
TOUR FEES: These must be purchased at the office at the main gate (approx. 500 meters from the cave entrance) and presented to the ticket kiosk next to the lagoon. As of February 2020, the tour price is approximately US 8 dollars per person with a minimum of two paying customers per boat. Life jackets are included in the tour price. Headlamps can be hired at the lagoon kiosk for 5000 LAK. The operating times for the boat trip are 08.00 – 17.00, daily.
TOUR DURATION: The round trip will take approx. 2.5 hours (this also includes the stop at the formations plateau). For safety, the maximum number of passengers per boat, is three. Life jackets must be worn at all times while in the boat. If you don’t have your own flashlight it’s highly recommended you rent a headlamp. The cave has a large internal dimension and can be very dark without a light.
THE HIGHLIGHT: After traveling approximately 1 km into the depths of the cave, sightseers can alight at an underground beach where the tunnel opens up into a massive void (the cave ceiling is 40 meters above the river level). This is probably the most impressive section of the cave. There is a wide plateau (approx. 300 meters long and 50 meters wide) which rises 20 meters above the river. For viewing safety a cement trail has been put in place to provide sure footing as you work your way across the plateau. Handrails and barriers are also in place to keep sightseers at a distance from the fragile speleotherm. The trail eventually leads back down to the river, on a solid stairway, where sightseers can re-join there boats for the continuation of the tour.
THE UPSTREAM SIDE: From the formations plateau it’s another 6.5 km to the upstream entrance (exit point). As the boat approaches the exit point the glow of daylight penetrates well into the cave. After exiting the cave the boat continues on to a lost world, beyond the upstream entrance. A place where jungle clad, jagged peaks encroach on the river and groups of water buffaloes graze along its banks. Approx. 1 km from the upstream entrance, there’s a landing point where passengers can alight and stretch their legs around the nearby encampment.
THE RETURN RUN: After relaxing for 20 – 30 minutes at the encampment, sightseers on the standard tour will re-join the boat for the 45 minute run back through the cave. Once again the world of daylight is left behind as one enters the darkened, primordial world of Kong Lor Cave; an experience which is a highlight of a tour through Laos and perhaps, even South East Asia.

CONTENT: A high quality adventure and travel 4k video featuring the renowned Thakhek Loop Tour in Khammouane Province, Laos. This video is filmed as a motorbike road trip, starting in Thakhek, and includes all the highlight attractions such as Nang Ene Cave, the Sanseda Viewpoint, the Thalang Sunrise Boat Tour, Dragon Cave, Cold Springs, the Rock Viewpoint Zip-line Circuit and the renowned Kong Lor cave.
ABOUT: The Thakhek Loop is an off the beaten track travel experience and is gaining notoriety as one of the best motor bike touring trips in South East Asia. In years gone by it was considered an arduous undertaking, due to some long stretches of dirt road along hwy 1E. That is no longer the case. As of 2016, all roads on hwy 1E are sealed.
BOTH SEASONS: It is now possible to do the trip comfortably during the wet (monsoon) season. Having completed it in both seasons, it’s my considered opinion the end of the wet season (October) is actually the best time to do the loop due to the amazingly scenic rice fields (just before the harvest) along the karst corridor between Na Hin and Lak Sao.
DURATION & DISTANCE: The full distance, including a side trip to Kong Lor Cave, is 442 km. With that in mind I would recommend 4 days to complete the trip to enable a more satisfying, unhurried sightseeing experience. Additionally if you’re inexperienced on a motorbike, I suggest allowing more time. Some information sources on the web will say the Thakhek Loop can be completed in 3 days. While that is true, you will definitely feel rushed and not have much time to enjoy the attractions on the way. For example, a trip through Kong Lor Cave, followed by a visit to the Rock Viewpoint zip-line circuit will encompass a full day. In this regard an extra night at Na Hin Village is recommended before undertaking the ride back to Thakhek. At a minimum, this will make your loop trip a 4 day/3 night circuit.
