We drove from Almaty to Taraz in May, it was our first road trip in Kazakhstan. It was quite warm, and it was absolutely beautiful. Be sure to pack all you need before you hit the road, anything from food, water, tissue, hand sanitizer etc. since it might be really hard to find them on the way. Also, beware of all the speed limit, it can change from 80 to 20 within a hundre meters, and there might be road police nearby. So be very careful! If they do catch you though, don't overpay your fine. ;)

The friends will also visit a desert island, a historical place associated with the name of the brave Otegen batyr.

In Tekeli and Taldykorgan there are many spontaneous markets. Products can be bought from local farmers, but if you do not know the proven vendors, then it's better to go to the bazaar. The place offers a good choice of meat, dairy products, vegetables and fruits.

Ridder is a small town with approximately 50.000 inhabitants. It's one of the biggest towns of the East Kazakhstan Region and it's located in the Altai mountains.
Ridder emerged from a mountain village in the 18th and 19th centuries and was called Leninogorsk during the Soviet era.
Риддер — небольшой город с населением около 50 000 человек. Это один из крупнейших городов Восточно-Казахстанской области, расположенный в горах Алтая.
Риддер возник из горного села в 18-19 веках и в советское время назывался «Лениногорск».
Риддер - шамамен 50 000 тұрғыны бар шағын қала. Бұл Шығыс Қазақстан облысының ең ірі қалаларының бірі және Алтай тауларында орналасқан.
Риддер 18-19 ғасырларда таулы ауылдан пайда болып, Кеңес Одағы кезінде «Лениногорск» деп аталған.

I just decided to drive through the region and take pictures of the roads, some of them I have not driven on for a long time, and one of them I drove on for the first time at all.
To be honest, I'm impressed by the beauty, I hope you enjoy it too...

Almaty region (Almaty oblysy, Almaty oblysy) - region in the southeast of the Republic of Kazakhstan. It was formed on March 10, 1932 as part of the Kazakh ASSR, with the spelling Alma-Ata region adopted until 1992. The administrative center of the region was the city of Alma-Ata/ In April 2001 by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan the regional center was moved to Taldykorgan. Since the middle of 2022 the center is to be Kapshagay. Population of the region - 2 059 200 people (at the beginning of 2020)
History of region.
In 1867 the Semirechenskaya region of the Russian Empire was founded, in 1897 it was transferred to Turkestan Governorate-General.
On April 30, 1918 Semirechenskaya region became part of Turkestan ASSR. On October 22, 1922, the Semirechenskaya region was given the name Jetysu. On October 27, 1924, as a result of national-territorial division, it was divided. The northern part of the region became Dzhetysu province of the Kirghiz ASSR, the southern part of the Kara-Kirghiz AO, directly subordinated to the RSFSR.
In January 1928 Dzhetysu province was abolished and its territory was distributed between Alma-Ata and Semipalatinsk districts of the Kazakh ASSR. In December 1930, the districts were abolished, the districts were enlarged, and were transferred to the direct subordination of the republican authorities.
On March 10, 1932 Alma-Ata region of Kazakh ASSR (as a part of RSFSR) was formed, from December 5, 1936 - as a part of the Kazakh SSR with the center in Alma-Ata and consisted of 18 districts.
At the end of 1939 a part of districts was given to Djambul and Semipalatinsk regions, 23 districts, including 7 newly formed ones remained in the Alma-Ata region.
In March, 1944 it separated from it Taldy-Kurgan region, where 11 districts were passed to.
At the end of 1959 the city of Alma-Ata was separated from the region. In the same year Alma-Ata and Taldy-Kurgan regions were united, then in 1968 Taldy-Kurgan region was singled out again.
The last unification of two oblasts - Almaty and Taldykorgan regions occurred in 1997.
The region includes 17 districts and 3 cities of regionaly subordination (cities Taldykorgan, Kapshagai, Tekeli).
In accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan No. 585 of April 14, 2001 On Relocation of the Regional Center of Almaty Region, the city of Taldykorgan became the regional center.
On September 2, 2019, an area of 10.92 km² was excluded and transferred to Zhambyl region.
According to President Tokayev's decision, in 2022 the city of Kapshagay should become the new center of Almaty region, and the new Zhetysu region will be separated from its composition.

Burkhan-Bulak is the highest waterfall in Kazakhstan, located in the Yeskeldinsky district of the Almaty region in the mountains of the Dzhungarsky Alatau in the gorge of the Kora river above the regional city of Tekeli, 130 km from Taldykorgan. The total height of the 4 cascades is 168 m, and the visible part of the three lower cascades is 114 m.
Бурхан-Булак — самый высокий водопад Казахстана, расположен в Ескельдинском районе Алматинской области в горах Джунгарского Алатау в ущелье реки Кора выше города областного значения Текели, в 130 км от Талдыкоргана. Shot in 2023, this is a street walk along the central axis of the new Astana, from the Khan Shatyr Shopping Center along Nurjol Boulevard to the Presidential Palace, passing Baitirek Tower, the most important monument of Kazakhstan’s capital.
Nurzhol Boulevard was designed by renowned architect Kisho Kurokawa. Along the boulevard is a row of buildings designed by well-known domestic and foreign architects, including Norman Foster, Tolegen Abilda, Roy Varacalli and Manfredi Nicoletti.
The city has had many name changes. Its first name Akmola was replaced by Akmolinsk in the 19th century, before under Khrushchev's government of the Soviet Union it became Tselinograd. In 1991 following Kazakhstan's independence, it became Akmola again. In December 1997, the city replaced Almaty (check out my Almaty walking tour at as the capital of Kazakhstan, and in May 1998, it was renamed Astana, which means capital city in Kazakh. In March 2019, when the long-ruling President Nursultan Nazarbayev stepped down, the capital was renamed to Nur-Sultan after his first name. This move was unpopular with a large part of Kazakhstan’s population and in September 2022 the name was reverted to Astana.
The city lies on the banks of the Ishim River in the north-central part of Kazakhstan, within the Akmola Region.
