Top 10 Things To Do In TAIPING, PERAK Malaysia | 4K
TAIPING is a town located in Larut, Matang and Selama District, Perak, Malaysia. It is located approximately 48 km (30 mi) northwest of Ipoh, the capital of Perak, and 78 km (48 mi) southeast of George Town, Penang. With a population of 245,182 (in 2013), it is the second largest town in Perak after Ipoh, the state capital.
Taiping took over Kuala Kangsar's role as the state capital from 1876 to 1937, but was then replaced by Ipoh. Its growth slowed after that, but in recent years the town has been developing rapidly again. Perak State Museum is located in the town.
Taiping also receives some limelight for being the wettest town in Peninsular Malaysia.citation needed] The average annual rainfall is about 4,000mm in Taiping while the peninsula's average is 2,000mm – 2,500mm. Its unusual rainfall has also led to a fertile collection of flora and century-old rain trees in the Taiping Lake Gardens.
The area developed quickly in the 19th century when tin was discovered. The mines attracted large numbers of settlers, particularly Chinese. Feuds began between the different groups of Chinese immigrants and became so bitter that in the early 1870s, the British intervened and assumed control of the town.[6] Taiping was the capital for the districts of Larut, Matang and Selama in Perak. Before 1937, Taiping was the capital of the state of Perak and the centre of a long and drawn out war resulting in a change of rulership for the state. Taiping used to be known as Klian Pauh – Klian meaning mine while Pauh is a type of small mango.
Long Jaafar has been historically credited with the discovery of tin in Larut in 1848. According to legend, Long Jaafar had an elephant named Larut and he used to take this elephant with him when journeying between Bukit Gantang and Lubok Merbau. One day the elephant went missing and when the elephant was eventually found three days later Long Jaafar noticed tin ore embedded in the mud that was on the elephant's legs. It is said that this was how Larut got its name.
Top Places To Visit in Taiping, Malaysia
The name Taiping is made up of two Chinese characters 太 (tai - 'great') and 平 (ping - 'peace'). The discovery of tin deposits in the area in the 19th century attracted settlers from China, who were organised into two feuding groups around the Cantonese Ghee Hin(義興) society and the Hakka Hai San (海山) society. British intervention in the early 1870s put an end to the feuding and the town, which used to be known as Klian Pauh, acquired its present name. The British made Taiping the administrative centre for the state of Perak in 1875. The town served this function until 1937 when the state capital was moved to Ipoh.
The town sits on a coastal plain at the foothills of the Bintang Range. This topography is responsible for the copious rainfall for which the town is known. Locals do not wonder whether it will rain on a particular day; they wonder what time it will rain. This is my personal picks for the top places to visit when you're in Taiping, Malaysia

15 Things to Do in Taiping, Perak
Taiping is the second-largest city in the state of Perak, Malaysia. Historically, it was the first capital of Perak before the capital was shifted to Ipoh in 1935.
Before the completion of the North-South Expressway, Taiping was the middle point of travel from Ipoh to Penang Island. After the highway was completed, travelers could bypass Taiping by using the highway to travel from Ipoh to Penang. As a result, travelers have less commonly visited Taiping. However, it still has a rich history, and many of its heritage elements are still maintained.
We purposely diverted to Taiping to visit this historic town during a trip from Kuala Lumpur to Penang last month. There are still plenty of things to see and places to visit. We stayed there for half a day on the way to Penang and then stayed overnight in Taiping on the way back. In this article, we will also include some lesser-known places that are worth visiting, which we discovered two years ago. Let's delve into the details of our itinerary.
