10 Best Seaside Towns in the UK

What are the best seaside towns in the United Kingdom? New towns are developing at the seaside across the UK in addition to those ancient towns and cities. All of these towns and cities are worming their way into the hearts of tourists from home and abroad. With due respect to these towns, and out of a deep sense of duty, we want to identify which of these towns are the best so that we can help the decision-making process for those having reasons to consider seaside towns. On the basis of that, we present to you the 10 best seaside towns in the UK.
Please note that most of these best towns in the UK have at one time or the other been the best in England.
10. Swanage, Dorset, England
The tenth place we’ll consider as one the best seaside towns in the UK is Swanage in South West of England. The town has been a popular seaside resort since Victorian times. Up till now, families have continued to enjoy its calm shallow beach. This seaside is also one of the 10 best seaside resorts in the UK.
With its panoramic views, the seaside resort offers relaxing luxurious holidays in self-catering accommodation in caravans and luxury hot tub lodges. If you want to own a holiday home, they’re available here with unrivaled views across the bay. The town is about one kilometer from the leisurely beautiful Swanage Railway. Its proximity to this and other parks, beaches, and castles makes it a good choice.
9. St Davids, Pembrokeshire, Wales
Stepping out of England, we find a small city and community in Pembrokeshire known as St Davids. It is the smallest location in the whole of the United Kingdom with city status. With its stunning coastal scenery unmatched in Pembrokeshire, it’s also the smallest urban area by local authority boundary.
One of the reasons for its inclusion on this list is its ability to blend its sacred status with its National Park. St Davids has a relaxed and vibrant atmosphere as you see surf shops, outdoor adventure centers, holiday cottages, and hotels in the shadow of its cathedral.
8. Southwold, England
When this town was found in the ninth position on the list of the most popular seaside destinations, we knew that it would be among the 10 best seaside towns in the UK. Now, it is the number 8 on this list. All year round, Southwold remains a tourist attraction, thanks to its dramatic coastline and beautiful architecture. Its cozy pub lunches and walks along its beach are charming.
As you walk along its pier, you will see spectacular views as you check in and out of many independent shops. You would love the charming seaside resort of Southwold. Though it’s almost an island, its sandy beach and hut-lined promenade offer a wonderful environment for holidaymakers and weekenders.
7. Filey, North Yorkshire, England
Ironically to some, Filey which is a town in the Borough of Scarborough considered unpopular by some people is one of the 10 best seaside towns in the UK. Truly, this beautiful seaside destination in North Yorkshire deserves a slot here as one of the most popular in the UK. It used to be a fishing village before developing into a popular resort with a very large beach that is playing a remarkable role in popularizing it.
It is quieter than most of its neighbors and most of the other coastal towns. This is because it has enough accommodations, seats, and transportation. There is no need for any rush here. You can just go there and enjoy your peace.

Berwick, Pennsylvania, USA

Berwick, nestled in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, forms a part of the picturesque Northeastern Pennsylvania landscape, just 28 miles southwest of Wilkes-Barre. Its population, recorded at 10,355 in the 2020 census, contributes to the vibrant Bloomsburg–Berwick metropolitan area, encompassing Columbia and Montour counties with a combined population of 85,562 as of the 2010 census.

Founded by Evan Owen, a Welsh Quaker and surveyor, Berwick draws its name from the English town of Berwick-upon-Tweed. Settled along the north bank of the Susquehanna River in 1769, the borough was officially founded in 1786 and incorporated in 1818.

Throughout its history, Berwick has thrived with a diverse industrial base. Notable companies like the American Car and Foundry Company and Wise Potato Chips have contributed to its economic vitality. The borough experienced significant growth, particularly after consolidating with West Berwick in 1917, witnessing a population surge from 5,357 in 1910 to a peak of 14,010 in 1950.

Berwick has gained acclaim beyond its industrial prowess, boasting successful high school sports teams like the Bulldogs football team, which has secured six state championships and three national titles. Additionally, the town celebrated its first-ever baseball state championship in 2008.
One of Berwick's cherished traditions is the Berwick Christmas Boulevard, a mile-long spectacle of lights and displays along Market Street since 1947, attracting thousands of visitors annually. The event, organized by the Jaycees, offers a festive experience, complete with the distribution of Wise Potato Chips by none other than Santa Claus himself.

Rich in historical heritage, Berwick hosts notable landmarks such as the Berwick Armory and the Jackson Mansion and Carriage House, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Situated between Luzerne and Columbia Counties, Berwick is bordered by Briar Creek Township to the north, Briar Creek borough to the west, Mifflin Township across the Susquehanna River to the south, and Salem Township in Luzerne County to the east. Its strategic location is enhanced by major transportation routes like U.S. Route 11 and Interstate 80, facilitating connectivity with neighboring towns and cities.

The borough's significance in transportation history is further exemplified by its past ties to the Susquehanna, Bloomsburg, and Berwick Railroad and the Pennsylvania Canal, both integral parts of the region's industrial legacy.
According to the 2000 census, Berwick had a population of 10,774, residing in 4,595 households, and comprising 2,802 families. The population density stood at 3,477 inhabitants per square mile, with 4,992 housing units at an average density of 1,611 per square mile. The racial composition was predominantly White (97.10%), with smaller percentages of African American (0.88%), Native American (0.28%), Asian (0.43%), Pacific Islander (0.05%), and individuals of other races (0.61%), along with 1.62% identifying as Hispanic or Latino.

Berwick experienced a significant influx of immigrants between 1890 and 1920, notably from Slovakia, Ukraine, Ruthenia, Lithuania, and Poland, contributing to the diverse cultural fabric that persists today, particularly within the Eastern Catholic and Roman Catholic communities.

Median household income stood at $27,442, while median family income was $32,357. Males had a median income of $26,467 compared to $21,061 for females. Per capita income was $14,538. Approximately 9.6% of families and 14.9% of the population lived below the poverty line, including 20.8% of those under 18 and 11.1% of individuals aged 65 or older.

During World War II, Berwick played a crucial role in the production of Stuart tanks, with over 15,000 of these tanks manufactured at an American Car and Foundry plant within the town. Not only did the plant contribute to the war effort by producing tanks, but it also served as a significant manufacturer of rolling stock for railroads. Today, Berwick remains home to Berwick Offray, a division of CSS Industries specializing in gift ribbon manufacturing. Additionally, Wise Foods, a renowned snack food company famous for its potato chips, was founded by Berwick native Earl Wise in the early twentieth century and continues to be a prominent presence in the borough.

Berwick hosts the Berwick Area School District, accommodating five public schools: Berwick Area High School, Berwick Area Middle School, Nescopeck Elementary School, West Berwick Elementary School, and Salem Elementary School. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education's data for the 2009–10 academic year, the district boasts a 94% regular attendance rate and an 88% on-time graduation rate.

U.S. Route 11 (US 11) is a key north-south highway stretching 1,645 miles from New Orleans, Louisiana, to the Canadian border at Rouses Point, New York. Established in 1926, the route retains much of its original path, passing through ten states and offering a scenic alternative to the faster interstates. It runs southwest to northeast, often paralleling I-81.

Louisiana: US 11 begins in the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge in New Orleans, crossing Lake Pontchartrain on the Maestri Bridge, built in 1928. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the bridge was the only eastern route into New Orleans. US 11 then parallels I-10 and I-59 before entering Mississippi.

Mississippi: In Mississippi, US 11 runs alongside I-59 through towns like Picayune, Poplarville, Hattiesburg, and Laurel. It serves as a vital regional route, providing access to local businesses, scenic areas, and historical sites. In Hattiesburg, US 11 passes the University of Southern Mississippi, and in Laurel, it moves through a historic downtown before crossing into Alabama at Meridian.

Alabama: US 11 parallels I-59 through Alabama, passing through Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Gadsden, and Fort Payne. In Tuscaloosa, the highway runs near the University of Alabama and in Birmingham, it passes through historic neighborhoods, offering a glimpse of the state's industrial past. The route crosses into Georgia after Fort Payne.

Georgia: The highway briefly enters Georgia, skirting the northwest corner near Lookout Mountain, with views of the Appalachian foothills before continuing into Tennessee.

Tennessee: In Tennessee, US 11 travels through Chattanooga, following I-75 to Knoxville, where it splits into US 11E and US 11W. US 11E runs northeast through Greeneville, Johnson City, and Bristol, while US 11W passes through Kingsport, meeting US 11E near the Virginia state line.

Virginia: In Virginia, US 11 runs through the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah Valley, connecting towns like Abingdon, Wytheville, Roanoke, and Harrisonburg. The highway follows the Great Wagon Road, an important colonial route, and runs parallel to I-81 through scenic landscapes, historic towns, and Civil War sites.

West Virginia: Entering West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle, US 11 travels through Ridgeway, Bunker Hill, Inwood, and Martinsburg. It runs parallel to I-81 and serves as a main road for these communities, offering a quieter alternative to the interstate.

Maryland: US 11 covers a short 12.83-mile stretch in Maryland, connecting Williamsport, Hagerstown, and Maugansville. It runs parallel to I-81, serving local communities and providing access to historical sites like the C&O Canal National Historical Park in Williamsport.

Pennsylvania: In Pennsylvania, US 11 enters near Greencastle, following I-81 through Chambersburg and Shippensburg. North of Carlisle, the highway passes the Miracle Mile, known for its traveler services. In Harrisburg, US 11 merges with US 15 and parallels the Susquehanna River, continuing through Danville, Bloomsburg, Wilkes-Barre, and Scranton before reaching New York.

New York: In New York, US 11 follows the Susquehanna River’s eastern edge from the Pennsylvania border to Binghamton, then continues through Cortland, Syracuse, Watertown, and Canton. The highway skirts the edge of the Adirondack Park, moving through rural landscapes before ending at the Canadian border in Rouses Point.

US 11 offers a unique travel experience, showcasing the history, culture, and natural beauty of the eastern United States. Unlike interstates, US 11 takes travelers directly through small towns and communities, preserving its original character while providing a scenic, slower-paced alternative to faster highways.
