A Short Walk Around Siddiphur, Gujarat

Did you know that the Bohra are a third sect of Islam? They are a minority in Sidhpur and not accepted by the majority of the Muslim community. Sidhpur is a major center for the wealthy Bohra Muslims who primarily live abroad and only visit their ancestral homes for important social ceremonies.

Both sides of a long street in Sidiphur is filled with colorful Victorian mansions built in the late 19th-early 20th centuries in pastel hues. Gorgeous facades that emulate European styles. We felt as if we had been dropped into a street of English row houses. Each house expresses the owner's creativity. One empty, private residence, built for ONE family, had 360 windows!

What a treat just walking this unexpected street in India, of all places. In just one Incredible India Day, we visited Raniki Vav Step Well, a holy crematiion site and now admired Victorian houses... It's no wonder we keep returning to India....

Uttara Kannada | Top 15 Best Tourist Places in Uttara Kannada District | Gokarna | Karnataka

Uttara Kannada District is one of the largest districts in our State, boasting abundant natural resources. The district showcases diverse geographical features, including dense forests, perennial rivers, rich flora and fauna, and a lengthy coastal line spanning approximately 140 kilometers. It is bordered by Belgaum District and the State of Goa to the North, Dharwar District to the East, and Shimoga and Udupi Districts to the South, with the Arabian Sea forming the Western boundary. Out of its total land area of 10.25 lakh hectares, 8.28 hectares are covered by forests, while only around 1.2 lakh hectares (roughly 10%) are utilized for agriculture and horticulture. The District comprises 12 Talukas, namely Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar, Bhatkal, Sirsi, Siddapur, Yellapur, Mundgod, Haliyal, Supa (Joida), and Dandeli.

The district is home to 6 Assembly Constituencies, 4 Revenue Sub-Divisions, 3 City Municipal Councils, 2 Town Municipal Councils, 6 Town Panchayats, 19 Nadakacheri Offices, 239 Village Accountant circles, 35 Hobblies, 231 Gram Panchayats, and 1289 Villages. The major regional languages spoken here are Kannada and Konkani. Cultivable land in the District constitutes approximately 10% of the total area, with forests covering the majority of the land. In addition to its natural resources, the district also boasts some remarkable man-made structures. Notable among these are the Hydro Electric Power Project and Nuclear Power Project. Key Hydro Electric Power Projects include Supa Dam, Kadra Dam, Kodasalli, and Gerusoppa Dam, along with their generating units. Among the Nuclear Power Projects, the Kaiga Nuclear Power Project holds significance.

Uttara Kannada District experiences significant rainfall during the monsoon season. The district is home to several important rivers, including the Kali river in Karwar and Supa (Joida) Taluk, the Gangavali/Bedti river in Ankola Taluk, the Aghanashini river in Kumta, Siddapur, and Sirsi Taluk, the Sharavati river in Honnavar Taluk, the Venkatapur river in Bhatkal Taluk, the Varada river in Sirsi Taluk, and the Bedti river in Yellapur Taluk. These rivers have depths ranging from 9′ to 10′ and the height of their riverbanks is approximately 12′ to 15′.

The district is also known for its famous places of worship, such as the Madhukeshwar Temple in Banavasi, the Ulavi Channabasaveshwar Temple in Ulavi, the Siddivinayaka Temple in Idagunji, the Mahabaleshwar Temple in Gokarna, the Mathobara Temple in Murdeshwar, and the Marikamba Temple in Sirsi.

In addition, Uttara Kannada District boasts ancient monuments like the Jain Basti and Swarnawalli Math, Sonda Fort, and Mirjan Fort. The mosque in Bhatkal is also renowned for its magnificent designs.

The district is rich in traditional folk arts, including Suggikunitha, Holi Dance, Hulivesha, and Siddi Dance. Yakshagana, a traditional form of theater, is also highly regarded in the district.
