What Happened at Sandby Borg : Öland Sweden
Today we will visit the ruins of an ancient place called Sandby Borg on the island of Öland in Sweden, where a grisly massacre took place about 1500 years ago.
What Happened at Sandby Borg : Öland Sweden
------------------
Sandby borg is an Iron Age ringfort, one of at least 15 on the island of Öland, Sweden. It sits about 2 kilometers southeast of Södra Sandby village in Sandby parish in southeastern Öland. It is also close to the village of Gårdby.
The ringfort of Sandby borg is located adjacent to the shoreline on south-east Öland. Today, the structure consists of an eroded oval stone wall of 2–3 m height enclosing an area of approximately 5000 m2. The walls are made from local limestone with a fill of erratic boulders and pebbles. Three gates are visible as shallow depressions in the wall; crop marks visible in aerial shots of the site suggest the presence of a possible fourth gate. The original ringfort wall was 4 m wide and would have been approximately 4–5 m high.
Aerial photographs and geophysical surveys of the ringfort interior revealed buried stone structures, interpreted as stone house walls of 53 houses. The layout is similar to that of several other Öland ringforts, e.g. Eketorp, with houses radially placed inside the ring wall and a central block surrounded by a street.
To the west of the ringfort there is a structure consisting of numerous regularly placed rows of large erratic boulders, probably part of the defensive structure of the fort.

----------------------------
Now to the massacre that took place a long time ago:
Swedish archaeologists have found evidence of a 5th century massacre on the south-eastern island of Öland.
In a paper published in the journal Antiquity, the team writes about the 1,500 year old attack at Sandby borg.
Dozens of corpses have been found in the walled fort, their bodies left to rot where they fell.
All of the victims were killed with brutal force, team leader Helena Victor said. Some victims were found inside houses, others in the streets.
The archaeologists discovered decapitated bodies, blunt force trauma wounds to victims' heads, and even one person who seemed to have fallen into a fireplace in his final moments.
Even the corpse of a newborn was found among the dead, suggesting nobody was spared, the authors say.
The perpetrators of the massacre are not known, but it took place during a turbulent period of intense migration, when the Western Roman empire was collapsing and the Huns invading. The Baltic island of Öland was never under Roman rule.
Local authorities asked staff at the Kalmar Läns Museum to examine the area after treasure hunters found items at the site.
The first dig lasted only three days, but after the discovery of the walls of houses the team quickly found human remains.
Ms Victor says the bodies in the houses raised alarm bells, as historically corpses were usually cremated - and certainly were not left in people's homes.
You don't find people lying around in houses, Ms Victor told the BBC. [People] don't do it today, and didn't do it then.
While villagers normally lived outside the walled fort, they would shelter there in times of danger.
Between 200 and 250 people are thought to have lived in the fort, and Ms Victor says it does not look as if they defended themselves.
People seem to have been killed without defending themselves, said team leader Helena Victor. It seems like treason.
She suggests someone may have left a door open and let them in at night.

Eketorp Fortress : Öland Sweden
Eketorp Fortress : Öland Sweden
Eketorp is an Iron Age hillfort, located on southeastern Öland, Sweden, and extensively reconstructed and enlarged in the Middle Ages. Throughout the ages the fortification has served a variety of somewhat differing uses: from defensive ringfort, to medieval safe haven and thence a cavalry garrison. In the 20th century it was further reconstructed to become a heavily visited tourist site and a location for re-enactment of medieval battles. Eketorp is the only one of the 19 known prehistoric fortifications on Öland that has been completely excavated, yielding a total of over 24,000 individual artifacts. The entirety of southern Öland has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Iron age
The first fortress, Eketorp I, was built in the 300´s during a period of prosperity on the island of Öland. In order to defend their possessions, about 20 households got together and built the fortress. It became a common meeting place and a temporary shelter in times of trouble. Gradually it became a permanent settlement during the Eketorp II period. The diameter of the first fortress´ wall was smaller than what you see today. The fortress worked for a hundred years as a refuge fortress.
The next fortress, Eketorp II, was built in the 400´s and was inhabited until the 700´s. Eketorp worked as a fortified farming village for three hundred years. 150-200 people lived within the protective ring wall with their animals. Some buildings were built along the ring wall, and some were built in the middle of the fortress. 53 buildings were built in total; dwelling-houses, cattle sheds, storehouses and workshops. The reconstructed dwelling house has walls of limestone and a roof of grass. There was a meeting place in the western part of the fortress and in its centre some stones were found that may have been the foundation of a religious icon. The archaeologists made some of the fortress´ finest discoveries here: small thin gold foils of men and women, so-called ”guldgubbar” – golden men.
The middle ages
During the High Middle Ages, from 1170-1240, Eketorp III was used as a military garrison with a cavalry. During this time, more than a hundred buildings were contained inside the ring wall without a single fire except for a fire in the central kitchen.
Eketorp fortress was abandoned by its inhabitants in the 700s and was left to decay for almost 500 years. In the 1100s, new people moved in and started repairing the fortress defenses. The fortress wall was reinforced and a low outer wall was built. A centrally positioned kitchen and a number of workshops were built. Objects found in the fortress, including a large number of arrowheads, show that defense played a large role during this time.
Instead of buildings with stone walls, long rows of buildings with wooden walls that rested on stone were built. Many of the buildings served as stables and barracks, but it wasn´t only soldiers who lived in the fortress during this time. There were also woman and children, as soldiers brought their families when they moved into the fortress.
The well has been on the same site since the Iron Age and the garrison´s central kitchen was nearby. Food for all of the fortress´ inhabitants was cooked over a huge fireplace. A channel drain led from the well to the adjacent wetland to the east. The people who lived in Eketorp fortress were well aware of the fire risks that the fortress´ dense wooden buildings constituted. Because of this blacksmith´s forges were placed outside of the south gate in the area between the inner and outer walls.

This video contains two very interesting places on the northern end of the island. First part is about 8 minutes, but I suggest that you watch both, as they are very interesting sites. The first part of the video is about Långe Erik, an old lighthouse on the northern tip of the island of Öland. The second part is about a re-constructed longhouse from the Iron Age at Skäftekärr, a bit south from the lighthouse.
------------------------------------------------
LÅNGE ERIK Lighthouse at the northern tip of Öland
The lighthouse Långe Erik, officially Ölands Norra Udde (northern tip of Öland), marks the northern end of the Swedish Baltic island Öland. It stands on a small narrow island off the bay Grankullaviken, about 3 kilometers north of the village Nabbelund.
The limestone lighthouse is 32 meters high and was taken in operation in 1845. Contrary to its counterpart, the Långe Jan at the southern tip of Öland, the Långe Erik is quite exactly 60 years younger and almost 10 meters lower.
The lighting device of the Långe Erik initially consisted of an oil lamp, whose light has been amplified by standing mirror lenses. In 1906 the current lamp house was set up and equipped with a kerosene-bulb and a rotating lens apparatus. The rotation of the lens held in trransition by a clockwork in transition, which had to be wind every hour.
As early as 1935 the lighthouse was declared a national monument. The clockwork was taken out of service with the electrification of the lighthouse in 1947, but is still in the tower. A bridge to lighthouse island was built in 1965 and since 1976 the Långe Erik is unmanned and remotely controlled. The large lens apparatus was decommissioned and replaced by a smaller beacon on the balcony railing in 1991.
The Långe Erik is only open during the summer season (July to August) for visitors and you can climb up to the balcony in 28 meters. At the foot of the lighthouse there is a cozy kiosk, which offers coffee, soft drinks, ice cream and souvenirs.
---------------------------------------------
Skäftekärr Iron Age Village
In this part of the video, we will show you the reconstructed Iron Age Longhouse and its surroundings.
In Skäftekärr, near Böda on northern Öland, there is an Iron Age village with about 20 well-preserved stone house foundations distributed on about 10 farms from the period 300-700 AD. In the middle of the Iron Age village are the remains of a manor house with four house foundations. In the new Iron Age landscape, a reconstructed longhouse has been erected here, as it could have looked some 1,500 years ago and a fire ruin from a previously reconstructed house. In the restored Iron Age landscape, you can see how ancient Ölanders lived. Around the reconstructed farm there is a recreated Iron Age landscape with fenced fields, meadowland, felled trees, stone walls and sacrificial bog.

Eketorp`s fort / Eketorpi muinaslinnus/ Eketorps borg Eketorp fort is an Iron Age fort in southeastern Oland, Sweden, which was extensively reconstructed
The three building phases were:
Eketorp I (300-400 AD.)
Eketorp II (400-700 AD.)
Eketorp III (1000-1300 AD.).
Sandby borg is an Iron Age ringfort, one of at least 15 on the island of Öland, Sweden.
It sits about 2 kilometers southeast of Södra Sandby village in Sandby parish in southeastern Öland.
It is also close to the village of Gårdby.
From 2011 the fort has been subject of excavation, the results of which show that it was the scene of a massacre in the late 5th century AD.
The victims of the massacre were never buried but are found lying as they fell, inside the houses and scattered on the streets of the fort. This has resulted in a unique snapshot character of the archaeology at Sandby borg, providing new insights both to violence and conflict in the Iron Age but also concerning everyday life in the ringfort.
The ringfort of Sandby borg is located adjacent to the shoreline on south-east Öland. Today, the structure consists of an eroded oval stone wall of 2-3 m height enclosing an area of approximately 5000 m2. The walls are made from local limestone with a fill of erratic boulders and pebbles.

Eketorps borg
