Exploring Europe’s MOST EXPENSIVE Chapel - Igreja de São Roque - EXPLORING LISBON
► VISIT TOURABUNGA.COM: Experience Lisbon like a local with Tourabunga. Insider tips, local recommendations, and all the information you need to discover the city's hidden gems. →
Yes, Europe’s most expensive chapel is here in Lisbon Portugal. After some tasty vegan, we explore the fascinating church Igreja de São Roque. Lisbon’s Igreja de São Roque (Church of Saint Roch) sports a deceptively plain white facade, but the interior of the 17th-century building is home to some of the most prized (and allegedly expensive) Catholic art and architecture in all of Europe.
Our journey begins at a tasty Vegan restaurant called The Green Affair. From there we pick up a bag of terrific coffee at Fabrica Coffee Roasters. We then duck into Landeau Chocolate in Chiado and treat ourselves to another slice of the World’s Best Chocolate cake. With our bellies full, we make our way up a hilly street to quite an incredible church, Church of Sao Roque (Igreja de São Roque). You’d never know it from the facade that the interior holds wonderment for the eyes.
Located in the Bairro Alto neighborhood of Lisbon, the site of the Igreja de São Roque was initially used in the early 1500s as a shrine for Saint Roch, who was the patron saint of plague victims. The site was (at the time) located outside of Lisbon’s city limits in a location that had been used as a burial ground for victims of the plague. When the Jesuits arrived in Portugal later in the 16th century, King John III allowed them to use the site of the shrine to construct a church on the grounds that Saint Roch would be given a chapel in the building and remain the church’s namesake saint.
The Igreja de São Roque still works as a functional church, but it is also open to the public and houses a museum highlighting the art and history of the church. It’s a highly suggested stop for anyone visiting Lisbon.
We discover a few other things and make a few friends along the way. Why not tell your neighbors across the street and have a watch party with the latest episode of Tourabunga. Thanks for watching!

Sao Roque Church in Lisbon PORTUGAL
The Church of Saint Roch was built by the Jesuits in 1533 and it represents the oldest Jesuit church in Lisbon. The church inscription is connected to an historical fact. In the 16th century a cemetery where to bury all the victims of the plague was built in an area located outside the city walls. In 1506 a temple dedicated to Saint Roque was built; he was the protector of the sicks. After thirty years the temple was entrusted to the Society of Jesus which built a bigger temple, keeping the original Chapel of São Roque. The project was designed by Filippo Terzi, an Italian architect and engineer who worked at the service of the Spanish and Portuguese royal families. In the 18th century a royal decree ordered the expulsion of all Jesuits from Portugal, and their goods became property of the Charity House of Lisbon. At the moment they belong to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia.
Most expensive chapel in Europe in Roca Church, Lisbon
Absolutely Amazing The Igreja de São Roque (Church of Saint Roch) in Lisbon. The most notable chapel is the 18th-century Chapel of St. John the Baptist (Capela de São João Baptista), a project by Nicola Salvi and Luigi Vanvitelli constructed in Rome of many precious stones and disassembled, shipped and reconstructed in São Roque; at the time it was reportedly the most expensive chapel in Europe.
