Places to see in ( Romsey - UK )

Romsey is a small market town in the county of Hampshire, England. Romsey is 7 miles northwest of Southampton, 11 miles southwest of Winchester and 17 miles southeast of Salisbury. Romsey is one of the principal towns in the Test Valley Borough and lies on the River Test, which is known for fly fishing, predominantly trout. Romsey Abbey, the largest parish church in Hampshire, dominates the centre of the town.

Romsey was home of the 20th-century soldier and statesman Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, the 19th-century British prime minister Lord Palmerston, and the 17th-century philosopher and economist William Petty. Romsey is twinned with Paimpol in Brittany, France, and Battenberg, Germany.

Broadlands later became the home of Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, known locally as Lord Louis. In 1947, Mountbatten was given his earldom and the lesser title Baron Romsey, of Romsey in the County of Southampton. Queen Elizabeth II's husband, Prince Philip, was his nephew and upon Philip's marriage to Elizabeth in 1947 they departed London for their honeymoon at Broadlands.

Mountbatten was buried in Romsey Abbey after being killed in an IRA bomb explosion in Ireland on 27 August 1979. After his death his titles passed to his elder daughter, Lady Brabourne, who thus became Countess Mountbatten of Burma. Her eldest son was styled by the courtesy title Lord Romsey until he inherited the title of Lord Brabourne in 2005, and then the earldom in 2017.

Embley Park, a country estate located on the outskirts of Romsey was the home of Florence Nightingale, known for her pioneering work as a nurse and sanitary reform during the Crimean war and for laying the foundation of modern nursing. Nightingale is said to have had her calling from God whilst sitting under a giant cedar tree in the grounds of Embley Park on 7 February 1837.

Romsey Abbey is a Norman abbey, originally built during the 10th century, as part of a Benedictine foundation, housing a community of Benedictine nuns. The surviving Anglican Parish church of Romsey, now the largest parish church in the county, is the town's most outstanding feature and is open daily to visitors. King John's House & Tudor Cottage was allegedly a hunting lodge used by King John of England whilst hunting in the New Forest.

The existence of Sadler's Mill, the only mill to be developed on the main course of the River Test, is first recorded in the 16th century. The White Horse Hotel is a Grade II* listed 18th century coaching inn which now houses a 4-star hotel and brasserie owned and operated by Silks Hotels.

Great Places #1 - Bordon, United Kingdom

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Portsmouth, Hampshire, England - city tour 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Portsmouth is a port city in the ceremonial county of Hampshire on the south coast of England. Located mainly on Portsea Island, 110 km south-west of London and 31 km south-east of Southampton, it is the United Kingdom's only island city.

The city's history can be traced to Roman times. A significant naval port for centuries, Portsmouth has the world's oldest dry dock and was England's first line of defence during the French invasion in 1545. Special Palmerston Forts were built in 1859 in anticipation of another invasion from continental Europe. By the early-19th century, Portsmouth was the most heavily fortified city in the world, and was considered the world's greatest naval port at the height of the British Empire throughout Pax Britannica. The world's first mass production line was set up in the city, making it the most industrialised site in the world. During the Second World War, the city was a pivotal embarkation point for the D-Day landings and was bombed extensively in the Portsmouth Blitz, which resulted in the deaths of 930 people. In 1982, the city housed the entirety of the attacking forces in the Falklands War. Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia left the city to oversee the transfer of Hong Kong in 1997, which marked for many the end of the empire.

Portsmouth is one of the world's best known ports. HMNB Portsmouth is the largest dockyard for the Royal Navy and is home to two-thirds of the UK's surface fleet. The city is home to some famous ships, including HMS Warrior, the Tudor carrack Mary Rose and Horatio Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory. The former HMS Vernon naval shore establishment has been redeveloped as a retail park known as Gunwharf Quays. Portsmouth is among the few British cities with two cathedrals: the Anglican Cathedral of St Thomas and the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St John the Evangelist. The waterfront and Portsmouth Harbour are dominated by the Spinnaker Tower, one of the United Kingdom's tallest structures at 560 feet. Nearby Southsea is a seaside resort with a pier amusement park and medieval castle.

Portsmouth International Port is a commercial cruise ship and ferry port for international destinations. The port is the second busiest in the United Kingdom after Dover, handling around three million passengers a year. The University of Portsmouth enrols 23,000 students and is ranked among the world's best modern universities. Portsmouth is also the birthplace of author Charles Dickens and engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

In this video you can see the Romsey Abbey Parish Office as well as River Test and lovely green area, sort of park really around it the residential area in Romsey. Later on in the video I stopped by St. Denys Church in Chilworth. And once again I'm cycling with my commuting hybrid bike Carrera Subway One I bought second hand. Hope you enjoy the video.

Romsey Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Hampshire, and around seven miles northwest of Southampton, is the town of Romsey.

In 907 AD a Benedictine abbey was founded in Romsey by Edward the Elder for his daughter, Princess Aelflaed, a nun at Wilton who became the first Abbess of Romsey. The abbey was destroyed by Vikings around the year 993, but was later rebuilt. In 1539 it was disestablished during Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries. The abbey buildings were purchased by the town in 1544 and to this day it serves as a parish church.

During the early 12th century, Romsey was granted its first market charter by Henry I. Early industries included wool and leather - much of which was transported to the neighbouring town of Southampton (city status didn't come until 1964).

From 1832 to 1835, Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston, or commonly referred to as Lord Palmerston, became Member of Parliament for Hampshire South, within which Romsey is based. In 1859 he became the first prime minister from the Liberal Party, which formed that same year. He served in this role until his death in 1865. A statue of Palmerston features in the centre of the town.

In 1847 the railway arrived in Romsey courtesy of the London and South Western Railway. Today it serves as a junction station, situated on the Wessex Main Line which runs between Southampton and Bristol, and the Eastleigh to Romsey Line.

In 1858 Thomas Strong purchased a brewery in Romsey and named it Strongs. Brewing became a major employer in the town up until the late 20th century. In 1969 Strongs were purchased by Whitbread & Co. Ltd, and brewing ceased in Romsey in 1981.
