Rochester, KENT England | Historic Place to visit
#rochester #holiday #kent #darrenniletravel
Our first visit to a beautiful historic Rochester, Kent .
Rochester is a town in the unitary authority of Medway, in Kent, England. It is at the lowest bridging point of the River Medway about 30 miles (50 km) from London. Rochester was a city until losing its status as one in 1998 following the forming of Medway and failing to protect its status as a city. There have been ongoing campaigns to reinstate the city status for Rochester.
Rochester was for many years a favourite of Charles Dickens, who owned nearby Gads Hill Place, Higham, basing many of his novels on the area. The Diocese of Rochester, the second oldest in England, is centred on Rochester Cathedral and was responsible for the founding of a school, now The King's School in 604 AD, which is recognised as being the second oldest continuously running school in the world. Rochester Castle, built by Bishop Gundulf of Rochester, has one of the best preserved keeps in either England or France, and during the First Barons' War (1215–1217) in King John's reign, baronial forces captured the castle from Archbishop Stephen Langton and held it against the king, who then besieged it.
Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham, Strood and a number of outlying villages form a single large urban area known as the Medway Towns with a population of about 250,000. These places now make up the Medway Unitary Authority area. It was, until 1998, under the control of Kent County Council and is still part of the ceremonial county of Kent, under the latest Lieutenancies Act.

Best 10 Places To Visit In Kent 2023, England
Best 10 Places To Visit In Kent 2023, England
Often referred to as the Garden of England due to its endless acres of orchards and lush gardens, the county of Kent offers no end of fun things to do for those willing to wander a little further off the beaten track.
Not only is Kent well-known for its relatively mild climate, it also boasts some of England's oldest and most important historic attractions. It was in Kent that the Romans launched their invasion of England some 55 years before the birth of Christ, and where, over 500 years later, the Christian faith was first introduced to the island nation. As a result of these events, you'll often find Roman ruins brushing up against important religious sites, as is the case in the cathedral city of Canterbury.
Kent also boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in England. Visit the east coast of Kent, and you'll see the famous White Cliffs of Dover looking out towards neighboring France, visible in the distance. This same coastline is home to some 50 or more Kentish beaches, most of them easy day trips from London.

A Day Trip To Rochester, Kent | ad
Rochester in Kent makes a great wintery day trip, just 45 minutes from central London with Southeastern Railway.
With a beautiful high street lined with historic buildings, Rochester Cathedral and Rochester Castle – one of the best-preserved and finest example of Norman architecture in England, there’s plenty of things to see and do.
It’s also filled with independent stores and hidden gems. There’s Pips of Rochester, a lovely local greengrocers selling local produce, Kiss Kiss Heart and Paloma Studio which sell gorgeous gifts and Dickens House Wine Emporium – a wine store in a building that was once the apothecary where Charles Dickens collected his medicines.
The food scene in Rochester is also pretty special. Topes is the place for the best food in the town, serving gourmet dishes including pigeon, mackerel and sea bream. Fleur De Thé is a cute tea room / gift shop. It’s super photogenic and wow do they make a good cuppa!
Another great hidden gem was Playopolis Board Games Café just around the end of the high street. Opened last year, this family run board game café has over 700 board games, plus they serve fun cocktails too including Butterbeer!

Situated on the River Medway and Watling Street, Rochester served as a strategically important royal castle. During the late medieval period it helped protect England's south-east coast from invasion. The first castle at Rochester was founded in the aftermath of the Norman Conquest. It was given to Bishop Odo, probably by his half-brother William the Conqueror. During the Rebellion of 1088 over the succession to the English throne, Odo supported Robert Curthose, the Conqueror's eldest son, against William Rufus. It was during this conflict that the castle first saw military action; the city and castle were besieged after Odo made Rochester a headquarters for the rebellion. After the garrison capitulated, this first castle was abandoned.
Between 1087 and 1089, Rufus asked Gundulf, Bishop of Rochester, to build a new stone castle at Rochester. He established the current extent of the castle. Though much altered through the centuries, some parts of Gundulf's work survive. In 1127 King Henry I granted the castle to the Archbishop of Canterbury in perpetuity. William de Corbeil built the massive keep that still dominates the castle today. Throughout the 12th century the castle remained in the custody of the archbishops.
During the First Barons' War (1215–1217) in King John's reign, baronial forces captured the castle from Archbishop Stephen Langton and held it against the king, who then besieged it. The Barnwell chronicler remarked Our age has not known a siege so hard pressed nor so strongly resisted. After resisting for just over seven weeks, the garrison surrendered. The castle had been greatly damaged, with breaches in the outer walls and one corner of the keep collapsed, and hunger eventually forced the defenders' hand. The castle did not stay under John's control for long: in 1216 it was captured by the French Prince Louis, who was the new leader of the baronial faction. John died and was succeeded by his son King Henry III in 1216; the next year, the war ended and the castle was taken under direct royal control.
Rochester was besieged for the third time in 1264 during the Second Barons' War (1264–1267). The castle's royal constable, Roger de Leybourne, held Rochester in support of Henry III. Rebel armies led by Simon de Montfort and Gilbert de Clare entered the city and set about trying to capture the castle. Again the castle's defenders resisted, this time with a different outcome. After a week, the rebel armies raised the siege in the face of relief from Henry himself. The garrison did not surrender, and the castle suffered extensive damage that was not repaired until the following century. The castle saw military action for the last time in 1381 when it was captured and ransacked during the Peasants' Revolt. As Rochester Castle fell out of use its materials were reused elsewhere and custodianship relinquished by the Crown. The castle and its grounds were opened to the public in the 1870s as a park. At various points during the 19th and 20th centuries repairs were carried out. The castle is protected as a Grade I listed building and Scheduled Monument. Today the ruins are in the guardianship of English Heritage and open to the public.

The earliest parochial altar of St Nicholas was from the late 11th century in the cathedral nave (probably at the east end of the north aisle).
In origin the altar of St Nicholas may relate to the then well-known moving of the body of St Nicholas from Myra in southern Turkey to the new Norman church at Bari in Southern Italy in 1089.
It is now the offices of the Board of Education

The Rochester diocese was founded by Justus, one of the missionaries who accompanied Augustine of Canterbury to convert the pagan southern English to Christianity in the early 7th century. As the first Bishop of Rochester, Justus was granted permission by King Æthelberht of Kent to establish a church dedicated to Andrew the Apostle (like the monastery at Rome where Augustine and Justus had set out for England) on the site of the present cathedral, which was made the seat of a bishopric.

KING JAMES II OF ENGLAND / AND KING VII OF SCOTLAND / STAYED AT THIS HOUSE AS THE GUEST OF / SIR RICHARD HEAD BEFORE EMBARKING / FOR FRANCE ON THE 23RD DECEMBER 1688 / WHEN HE FINALLY LEFT ENGLAND.
James II & VII was King of England and King of Ireland as King James II and King of Scotland as James VII. Members of Britain's political and religious elite increasingly opposed him for being pro-French and pro-Catholic, and for his designs on becoming an absolute monarch. When he produced a Catholic heir to the throne, the tension exploded, and leading nobles called on William III of Orange (his son in law and nephew) to land an invasion army from the Netherlands, which William did. King James II spent his last night as King at a house in High Street, Rochester, which became known as Abdication House, on account that in February 1689, parliament declared that James's flight constituted an abdication and William and Mary were crowned joint monarchs.
In March 1689, James landed in Ireland where, with French support, he raised an army. He was defeated by William at the Battle of the Boyne in July 1690. James died in exile in Saint-Germain in France on 16 September 1701.

Rochester has grown from a small Saxon village to one of England’s finest cities.
Romans came in 43AD and made Rochester one of their most important towns by building a stronghold and a bridge over the River Medway.
It wasn’t until 1088 after the Norman invasion that Rochester had its first stone castle built on the remains of the old Roman Fort.
The then King, Rufus asked his Bishop Gundulf, an architect, to build him a stone castle and later a magnificent cathedral, which is the second oldest in the country.
Bishop Gundolf also built a leper hospital namely St. Bartholomew’s which was the oldest hospital in the country, albeit the original hospital has since disappeared.
One of Rochester most famous connections is that with Charles Dickens.
His family moved to Chatham when his was five years of age...
Rochester was a city until losing its status as one in 1998 following the forming of Medway and failing to protect its status as a city.
I hope you enjoy the walk!!!

For over 800 years Rochester Castle has stood overlooking the River Medway in the historic town of Rochester. The castle is widely regarded as one of the most exceptional examples of Norman architecture in England. Its keep, in particular, stands as the tallest surviving tower of its kind in Europe. The castle played a critical role during the Barons Wars, the siege of Rochester Castle by King John in 1215 is one of the most renowned and well-documented episodes in English history.
