Three Colours, 2022

In wartime, the Bulgarian flag was turned upside down – with the red stripe at the top. During a period of mourning, the national flag is lowered to half-mast. In times of crisis, the artist Ivan Moudov proposes that the flag be symbolically disunited and presented in three separate colours.

For the project “Three Colours”, Moudov installs one flag on each of the three flagpoles in front of the National Palace of Culture – white, green, and red. They can be read as a “deconstruction” of the national flag into a freer, purely artistic interpretation. The gesture is simple and follows the formal logic of the tricolour itself.

The “liberation” of each colour from the iconicity of the tricolour allows the history and the symbolism of each of the separate elements to unfold and opens up room for thought. What stands behind the construct of national identity, what is its power today, and what is it that determines our identity right now?

The shape and colours of the Bulgarian national flag were determined in the Tarnovo Constitution of 1879. It did not, however, provide an explanation of the symbolism of the colours. The choice of the colours is attributed to Georgi Rakovski. According to some interpretations, Rakovski himself wanted to connect the symbolism of the flag with Indo-Iranian sources. It is believed that the three colours and their placement symbolize the basic strata in ancient societies and their hierarchy: white is the clergy, green – the workers, and red – the warriors.

The symbolism of the colours of the national flag, as we perceive them in Bulgaria, is more abstract and corresponds to that of many other European states – white stands for purity and freedom, green – for hope and the country’s beautiful nature, and red – for the blood of those fallen, for the fighting spirit.

The interpretations of course do not stop here. The white flag is internationally recognized as a symbol of armistice and negotiations; in many other states, green is a symbol of Islam, but in Bulgaria, it is the flag of the April Uprising; the colour red is connected with combativeness and revolution, but also with self-sacrifice.

In separating the colours of the Bulgarian flag and using them for three different flags, Ivan Moudov does not simply reflect the division of the nation. He opens the Pandora’s box of the emotions with which we charge the symbols. The three separate colours in the installation briefly allow for the symbols to “breathe” in their abstract potentiality, while we, as viewers, can sense a new resonance of the ideas behind them.

▶ Vitosha Boulevard (from Wikipedia)
Vitosha Boulevard, often called Vitoshka, is the main commercial street in the centre of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, which is abundant in posh stores, restaurants and bars. It extends from the St Nedelya Square to the Southern Park. Many high-end fashion labels have outlets on Vitosha boulevard and the neighbouring streets: Versace, Escada, Bulgari, D&G, La Perla, Lacoste, Van Laak, Ermenegildo Zegna, Tru Trussardi, Moreschi, Marella, Max Mara, Gianfranco Ferré, Emporio Armani, Tommy Hilfiger, Boss, Baldinini. Among the notable buildings, located on the boulevard are: The National Palace of Culture, The Palace of the Courts, the house where the famous Bulgarian poet Peyo Yavorov lived and died. The corner of Vitosha and Patriarch Evtimiy boulevards, so called the Pharmacy (Аптека), is a popular place for meetings.
The boulevard is named after Vitosha, the mountain just next to Sofia. It was an unadjusted street during the Ottoman rule of Bulgaria and acquired the name Vitoshka ulitsa (Vitosha Street) after the Liberation, in 1883. The street was initially built up with low one-storey houses, but turned into an imposing trade street in the Interwar period as massive public buildings were constructed, changing Vitoshka's appearance completely.
According to a 2007 Cushman & Wakefield, Inc. study, Vitosha Boulevard is the world's 22nd most expensive trade street.
In May 2007, a renovation of the boulevard was announced, which aimed to restore the style of 1930s Sofia. Historical benches and street lights were added, as well as Art Nouveau round kiosks, more green areas, fountains, open-air bars, and a clock tower at the St Nedelya Church displaying the time in various world capitals.
In March 2013, reconstruction works on the boulevard started.
In summer 2015, there was another renovation of the boulevard completing the entirely pedestrian zone of the boulevard between Patriarch Evtimiy Blvd. and Alabin Str.

▶ Sofia (from Wikipedia)
Sofia is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria. It is situated in the Sofia Valley at the foot of the Vitosha mountain in the western parts of the country. The city is built west of the Iskar river, and has many mineral springs, such as the Sofia Central Mineral Baths. It has a humid continental climate. Being in the centre of the Balkans, it is midway between the Black Sea and the Adriatic Sea, and closest to the Aegean Sea.
Known as Serdica in Antiquity and Sredets in the Middle Ages, Sofia has been an area of human habitation since at least 7000 BC. The recorded history of the city begins with the attestation of the conquest of Serdica by the Roman Republic in 29 BC from the Celtic tribe Serdi. During the decline of the Roman Empire, the city was raided by Huns, Visigoths, Avars and Slavs. In 809 Serdica was incorporated into the Bulgarian Empire by Khan Krum and became known as Sredets. In 1018, the Byzantines ended Bulgarian rule until 1194, when it was reincorporated by the reborn Bulgarian Empire. Sredets became a major administrative, economic, cultural and literary hub until its conquest by the Ottomans in 1382. From 1530 to 1836, Sofia was the regional capital of Rumelia Eyalet, the Ottoman Empire's key province in Europe. Bulgarian rule was restored in 1878.

Bulgaria is a country with beautiful landscapes on the Black Sea coast. Bulgaria features attractive cities and resort towns that fascinate every traveler with their own character and aura, with mountains and rivers on one side and sun-kissed beaches and azure sea on the other. There are several attractions to visit in Bulgaria, ranging from castles to forts, museums to amusement parks.

Sofia, Bulgaria's capital, is one of the most beautiful sites to visit in the country. In Sofia, there are a variety of locations to visit. Sofia, with its 2000-year-old churches, municipal buildings, and cathedrals on one hand and modern museums, art galleries, city parks, and boulevards on the other, is a faultless fusion of ancient city and new township. Tourists flock to this largest Bulgarian city, which is nestled at the foothills of the Vitosha mountain.

Experience a taste of Sofia's rich great architectural history, then hit the road for short driving day trips further afield to be amazed by Bulgaria's rich history, wonders, and beauty.

▶️ While travelling BulgariaI have visited the following places in Sofia:

• The Russian Church (Church of St Nicholas the Miracle-Maker): is located in the center of Sofia, at the crossroads of Rakovska and Tsar Osvoboditel It is one of Sofia's most notable structures. It was built between 1907 and 1914 on the initiative of the Russian Embassy and on the land of Russian architect M. Preobrazhensky.

• Ivan Vazov National Theater :is Bulgaria's national theatre, as well as the country's oldest and most authoritative theatre, and one of the most important landmarks in Sofia, Bulgaria's capital. It is in the city center, with the facade facing the City Garden.

• Former headquarters of the Bulgarian Communist Party: is located in the Sofia, Bulgaria. Until August 1990, this was the headquarters of the Communist Party's Central Committee. Crowds protesting against communist rule set fire to it in the summer of 1990. Based on the designs of P. Zlatev.

• Bulgarian Archeological Museum: is a sector of the National Archaeological Institute, which is part of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. As such, the Institute serves as the national coordinator of archaeological research in Bulgaria, supervising excavations and research in the prehistoric, Thracian, Classical, and medieval periods.

• President Building: is at the main street in downtown Sofia, as well as the National Assembly, the Council of Ministers and others. Add The Presidency Building and other sights to your Sofia trip.

• The Church of Saint George: is a red brick rotunda that is thought to be the oldest in the city. This is Sofia's oldest structure, dating back to the 4th century. The Early Christian church stands among the ruins of Roman structures such as public buildings with hypocaust floors, a basilica, and a street.

• Ruins of ancient Serdica:The spectacular ruins of an ancient Roman city can be found in the heart of Bulgaria's capital, providing an intriguing glimpse into the region's history.

• Banyi Basha Mosque: is Sofia's only operational mosque, a relic of Bulgaria's nearly five-century Ottoman rule, and is used by the city's Muslim community. Mimar Sinan, a well-known Ottoman architect, designed the structure, which was completed in 1566.

• Sofia Synagogue: in Europe is located on the corner of EkzarhYosif and G. Washington streets in the old central part of Sofia. This is Sofia's only Jewish prayer house. The Sofia Synagogue is one of Bulgaria's most beautiful architectural monuments.

SHORT WALK THROUGH GEO MILEV DISTRICT | SOFIA BULGARIA | 4K |

A short walk through Geo Milev district beginning from the Romanian Embassy and ending at Nikolay Kopernik street.

Geo Milev, named after the famous Bulgarian poet, is one of the oldest districts in Sofia - built in the 1930’s. It is a rather quiet district and despite being near the city canter the air is clean mainly due to the fact that “Geo Milev” park is located there.

The video captures only parts of the neighborhood - the main walk is along “Shipchenski Prohod” boulevard where we pass by some of the buildings of the Bulgarian Academy of Science, 01 Regional Police Station and Shopping Centre “Galaxy”.
