🚀 The Strange Land of North Korea (DPRK) 👮

⛄ NORTHEAST PASSAGE ON ICEBREAKER 🧊 -
This is a film about a traveller in the strange land called North Korea or officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Tours to the DPRK are tightly scheduled and normally include a visit to the demilitarised zone, museums and statues to Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il, Pyongyang’s amusements parks, chandelier-laden metro system and showcase entertainment facilities such as the Circus and the SchoolChildren's Palace. In addition to these, I took a flightseeing flight on a Mi-17 helicopter over the DPRK's capital city of Pyongyang. As well, as my tour was an extended one, it also went the northeast of the DPRK to the tri-country area around the Rason Special Economic Zone where the DPRK, China and Russia conjoin.

The cult of the Kims is perhaps the most extraordinary feature of the DPRK. Images or statues of Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il are found everywhere. These graven images are effectively worshipped. This film shows scenes of the veneration of the Kims (Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il) that were witnessed.

The government guides control both what you can see and also what you can take photographs of. If you take a photograph of the military, construction or something that they feel does not portray the DPRK in a positive light then they force you to delete the photograph. On exiting the country, the border guards also reviewed photographs to see if they conformed to the aforementioned standards. Despite these restrictions, this film contains images that accurately portray the state of the country as I saw it.

The parts you'll see here are just across from the Chinese city of Dandong (Liaoning Province). The first place you'll see is called Sinuiju City (신의주시) and the second place is called Uiju County (의주군). Uiju is located just across from the Hushan section of the Great Wall.

map of North Korea

North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), is a country in East Asia, constituting the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. It borders China and Russia to the north, at the Yalu (Amnok) and Tumen rivers, and South Korea to the south at the Korean Demilitarized Zone. Its western border is formed by the Yellow Sea, while its eastern border is defined by the Sea of Japan. North Korea, like its southern counterpart, claims to be the legitimate government of the entire peninsula and adjacent islands. Pyongyang is the country's capital and largest city.

In 1910, Korea was annexed by the Empire of Japan. In 1945, after the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II, Korea was divided into two zones along the 38th parallel, with the north occupied by the Soviet Union and the south occupied by the United States. Negotiations on reunification failed, and in 1948, separate governments were formed: the socialist DPRK in the north, and the capitalist Republic of Korea in the south. The Korean War began in 1950, with an invasion by North Korea, and lasted to 1953. The Korean Armistice Agreement brought about a ceasefire and established a demilitarized zone (DMZ), but no formal peace treaty was ever signed.

According to Article 1 of the state constitution, North Korea is an independent socialist state. It holds elections, though they have been described by independent observers as sham elections, as North Korea is a totalitarian dictatorship, with an elaborate cult of personality around the Kim dynasty. The Workers' Party of Korea, led by a member of the ruling family, is the dominant party and leads the Democratic Front for the Reunification of Korea, of which all political officers are required to be members.

According to Article 3 of the constitution, Juche is the official ideology of North Korea. The means of production are owned by the state through state-run enterprises and collectivized farms. Most services—such as healthcare, education, housing, and food production—are subsidized or state-funded. From 1994 to 1998, North Korea suffered a famine that resulted in the deaths of between 240,000 and 420,000 people, and the population continues to suffer from malnutrition. North Korea occupies the northern portion of the Korean Peninsula, lying between latitudes 37° and 43°N, and longitudes 124° and 131°E. It covers an area of 120,540 square kilometers (46,541 sq mi). To its west are the Yellow Sea and Korea Bay, and to its east lies Japan across the Sea of Japan.

Early European visitors to Korea remarked that the country resembled a sea in a heavy gale because of the many successive mountain ranges that crisscross the peninsula. Some 80 percent of North Korea is composed of mountains and uplands, separated by deep and narrow valleys. All of the Korean Peninsula's mountains with elevations of 2,000 meters (6,600 ft) or more are located in North Korea. The highest point in North Korea is Paektu Mountain, a volcanic mountain with an elevation of 2,744 meters (9,003 ft) above sea level.[95] Considered a sacred place by North Koreans, Mount Paektu holds significance in Korean culture and has been incorporated in the elaborate folklore and personality cult around the Kim dynasty.

North Korea follows Songun, or military first policy, for its Korean People's Army. It possesses nuclear weapons, and is the country with the second highest number of military and paramilitary personnel, with a total of 7.769 million active, reserve, and paramilitary personnel, or approximately 30% of its population. Its active duty army of 1.28 million soldiers is the fourth-largest in the world, consisting of 5% of its population. A 2014 inquiry by the United Nations into abuses Pyongyang 평양직할시 (Chung-guyok)

Pyongyang, North Korea, peaceful land , Taedong River, korea Bay, tourist guides

Pyongyang (/ˈpjɒŋˈjæŋ, ˈpjʌŋ-/; (Chosŏn'gŭl: 평양; Hancha: 平壤), Korean pronunciation: [pʰjʌŋ.jaŋ], literally: Flat Land or Peaceful Land) is the capital and largest city of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (commonly known as North Korea).
Pyongyang is located on the Taedong River about 109 kilometres (68 mi) upstream from its mouth on the West Korea Sea and, according to preliminary results from the 2008 population census, has a population of 3,255,388.[5] The city was split from the South Pyongan province in 1946. It is administered as a directly governed city (chikhalsi, 직할시) on the same level as provincial governments, as opposed to a fter 1945[edit]
On 25 August 1945, the 25th army of the Soviet Army entered Pyongyang, and it became the temporary capital of the Provisional People's Committee for North Korea. A People's Committee was already established there, led by veteran Christian nationalist Cho Man-sik.[17] Pyongyang became the de facto capital of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea at its establishment in 1948. At that time, the Pyongyang government aimed to recapture Korea's official capital at that time, Seoul. Pyongyang was again severely damaged in the Korean War, during which it was briefly occupied by South Korean forces from 19 October to 6 December 1950. In 1952, it was the target of the largest aerial raid of the entire war, involving 1,400 UN aircraft.
After the war, the city was quickly rebuilt with Soviet aid, with many buildings built in the style of Socialist Classicism. The plans for the modern city of Pyongyang were first displayed for public viewing in a theatre building. On 27 July 1953 – the day the armistice between North Korea and South Korea was signed – The Pyongyang Review wrote: While streets were in flames, an exhibition showing the general plan of restoration of Pyongyang was held at the Moranbong Underground Theater, the air raid shelter of the government under Moran Hill. On the way of victory... fireworks which streamed high into the night sky of the capital in a gun salute briefly illuminated the construction plan of the city which would rise soon with a new look.[18]
In 2001, the authorities began a long-term modernization program. The Ministry of Capital City Construction Development was included in the cabinet in that year. In 2006, Kim Jong-il’s brother-in-law Jang Song-thaek took charge of the ministry.

Tourists must go on guided tours. As of June 2011, the northern border to China has been opened and Chinese citizens are free to drive their own vehicles to Luo, a small North Korean northeast border region where they are free to explore, mingle, and photograph. This is seen as a first step toward expanded tourism and development in that region.[citation needed]
For Westerners, there are a handful of private tour operators that help provide accesso see operating steam railways and the Pyongyang metro.
Travelers from Australia can make the journey on a small group tour with Travel Masters,[13] based on the Gold Coast, Queensland. Companies such as these are full-service shops that will take care of visas, flights, etc. for a single fee.
Since December 2013, North Korea has been open to tourists during the winter. The Masikryong Ski Resort outside Wonsan City in Kangwon Province opened in early 2014. While tourists have historically been restricted to Pyongyang, some tours[14] have recently been able to expand to other parts of the country such as Rajin (and the market there) and Chongjin.
Tourists can take the plane to Pyongyang from Beijing, Shenyang, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai and Vladivostok, and train services to Pyongyang

Bike Tour in North Korea: Day 4 - The Mountains are Calling

In the Autumn of 2019, Behind Handlebars and Above Borders arranged the first ever Danish bike tour in the country of North Korea. For six days, a group of 7 travelers was going to both explore the capital of Pyongyang, but also bike around the much more undocumented country side. A truly remarkable experience that gave an incredibly insightful view into a country that not many people get to take a look inside.

----

In the third video, we get out in the country side for some cycling. And we quickly find out, that on today's menu is climbing. Some serious climbing!

If you want to experience this yourself, Above Borders is arranging another bike tour in the Spring of 2020 that I definitely think you should take a look at. You can read everything about it here:

South Jeolla Province (전라남도) - South Korea

With the end of summer approaching, I headed down to Jeollanam-do (South Jeolla Province) with a couple friends for one last weekend on the beach. This is one of the most beautiful regions in South Korea, with lush mountains, rugged shorelines, and a large number of forest-covered islands. In this video, you'll see footage from Yeosu, a small coastal city known for delicious seafood and dramatic ocean views; Jangdeung beach, just one of many beautiful beaches in the area; and Boseong, and area renown for its terraced green tea fields.
