Explore Semonkong Waterfall & Dinosaur Footprints in Lesotho | Overland Honeymoon Ep. 6

Our final chapter...
We spent our last 2 nights in Lesotho at Semonkong Lodge and hiked to the magnificent waterfall. Just before we crossed the border into South Africa we stopped and viewed 230milion-year-old dinosaur footprints in Quthing. Our journey through Lesotho came to an end as we drove off to The Nest in Aliwal North.

The next morning we packed up and drove through the beautiful landscapes of the Karoo, and witnessed an incredible thunderstorm. We booked in for the night at Abrahamskraal before we head home the next morning.

We had an incredible journey, looking forward to our next trip, and can't wait to see where the wind takes us this time.

Episode 58 - Qacha's Nek to Maseru - Lesotho

This majestic road is called the A5 and runs from south of Lesotho all the way up to the capital Maseru for 225 kms. It was all paved, however I managed to find a good stretch of dirt during the last stretch that was really enjoyable.

In November 2021 I left Malta 🇲🇹 for a solo trip around the world on a Yamaha XT600e.
Throughout my journey, I am also visiting a number of missionary projects supported by Missio Malta which projects may be e.g. boreholes, houses, churches, medical equipment, renovations, educational programmes etc…

Maseru in Lesotho, travel, hotels, holiday, business, resorts, Basotho Hat shop
,Maseru has a total of six hotels, two of which, the Lesotho Sun and the Maseru Sun,.[18][19] During the 1960s, prior to the relaxation of South Africa's g were popular attractions among South African visitors, but the interest in them has since waned.[19] The Basotho Hat shop at the city's entrance is a popular source for souvenirs.[5]
The main tourist attractions of Lesotho, Lancer's Gap, Sani Pass, Afriski resort, Katse dam, Thaba Bosiu and the Maluti Mountains are located a short distance from Maseru. However, distances are deceiving in Lesotho as even a 120 km trip can take over 3 hours due to the rugged terrain.

Most of the traditional thatched-roof mud-brick houses, called rondavels, have been replaced with modern housing and office blocks which have a tint of traditional architecture. There have recently been some new buildings in the center of the city, particularly the building across LNDC center which now houses Good times cafe, a Vodacom shop, offices and the new building of the Ministry of Health which was completed in late 2007.

Tsoelike Pass, Lesotho - Mountain Passes of South Africa

This amazing and very steep (mainly) gravel pass descends steeply to the dual bridges over the Tsoelike River. The newer on is a concrete bridge already showing signs of flood damage, whilst the older, graceful suspension bridge spans the river well above the flood peak level, still stands intact and in surprisingly good condition, considering it was built in 1930 by German missionaries.

The pass is located in the southern quartile of Lesotho, fairly close to the border with South Africa. GPS S30.024641 E28.722584

The climb out to the northern side of the valley is much steeper and peppered with tight hairpins. The photo right at the end of the video puts it all into perspective.

Lesotho Road Trip to a Remote Mountain Village via Semonkong

This has to be one of the most breathtaking scenic road trips I have done. The trip from the Eastern Cape of South Africa to Semonkong in Lesotho and then up into a remote mountain village is an incredible experience. Some friends and I went to support a local church up in the mountains, by taking blankets and clothes just before their winter cold and snow moved in. The trip from Semonkong to the mountain village of Ha Rameno is only 25km, but due to the wet conditions and occasional drivable roads, it took us 4hrs of 4x4 offroad driving to get there. The footage of the 4x4 driving here is on the good roads 😊. I was too busy helping build tracks and helping navigate some of the paths to film the difficult sections, and my cellphone stabiliser, couldn't handle the bumps and g-forces either. I was grateful for the Toyota 4x4 vehicles, they really proved how tough they are.

The road trip through this part of Lesotho to Semonkong is a landscape photographers dream. We travelled at the end of April after there had been some good rainfall. The rivers were flowing just under their normal capacity, but it was wonderful to see so much water. South Africa has been experiencing severe drought, and I can’t tell you when last I saw a river flowing in full force. From the customs officers to the shepherds, the Lesotho people are kind and friendly. The road from the border post to Semonkong is in excellent condition. I have added this trip to my bucket list of places that I am going to ride on my bicycle. You just keep climbing and climbing as one mountain range leads to another.

The countryside is clean and has little villages neatly spread all over the landscape where small subsistence farming is the main activity. Sheep, goats, horse, donkeys and cattle are everywhere, being carefully watched by young shepherd boys and their mountain dogs. I had such a deep feeling of peace driving through this land. Life is simple and slow, but peaceful. There are hardly fences anywhere, something you don’t see in South Africa.

Seaka Bridge in Quthing, Lesotho

Moyeni is also referred to as Quthing and is the only town in this region. Moyeni, or Quthing, is the capital town of the Quthing region and has a total population of around 130 000 residents in the area.

Seaka Bridge is one of the iconic places in Lesotho. The bridge is a colonial legacy. The bridge was manufactured in Worcester, England and erected at Commissioner drift, over Caledon River in 1882, having been brought up from the coast on ox wagon and re-erected in Seaka with the help of a grant from the United Kingdom Colonial Development and Welfare Fund. It was officiated and opened on the 12th December 1959.

Seaka is one of the most attractive places in Lesotho. It has two iconic bridges one build during colonial period and the new one build in the early 1990s.

Village Hike, Lesotho, South Africa

This video was taken on a hike we did in the small south African country of Lesotho. It is a very rural country where 75% of people still have no electricity, most are working in agriculture and they wear mainly blankets and woolen hats.

There's like a 60% chance the car will make it up this hill - a Lesotho traveller's proverb.

As the 5 Drive team arrives in Lesotho, Nick questions the rental car's ability to make it up the notorious mountain pass. Thankfully, they arrive safely at Afriski - a little slice of snow right here in Southern Africa. In this episode, they're mostly cold!
