In this video, I'll finally be visiting Afghanistan! This is a country you rarely see on anyone's travel list and I'll be visiting completely alone. I will be crossing the border from Tajikistan to Afghanistan and spending my first day in the city of Kunduz. Stay tuned to see how it's like to travel alone in Afghanistan under Taliban rule. Driving to the Panj River at the Afghanistan-Tajikistan Border - Kunduz Province
Sher Khan Bandar is the main border town and crossing with Afghanistan's northern neighbor Tajikistan. The town was captured by the Taliban on 22 June 2021 and at the time of the recording of this video, the town was still under control of the Taliban. This is the second video uploaded by the Orient Journal.
Sher Khan Bandar
Sher Khan Bandar is a northern Afghan border town and dry port situated at the border of Afghanistan and Tajikistan. It is located in Kunduz Province, next to the Panj River, approximately 56 km (35 miles) northwest of Kunduz city. The dry port links Afghanistan with the town of Dushanbe in Tajikistan. The town's former name was Qezel Qal'eh but has since been renamed after a local clan dignitary.
The town grew rapidly after the completion of the Tajikistan–Afghanistan bridge at Panji Poyon in 2007. This bridge allowed for easy transit to Tajikistan, boosting trade between Afghanistan and Central Asia enormously. Hundreds of cargo trucks pass through the town every day, carrying goods from one country to the other.

Sher Khan Bandar is the main border town and crossing with Afghanistan's northern neighbor Tajikistan. The town was captured by the Taliban on 22 June 2021 and at the time of the recording of this video, the town was still under control of the Taliban. This is the third video uploaded by the Orient Journal.
Throughout the video, large electricity towers can be seen. These towers likely bring electricity from neighboring Tajikistan into Afghanistan as the country imports about half its electricity from its three post-Soviet neighbors to the north: Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
From 1:04 to 1:15, an Afghan Kuchi dog can be seen. The large dog is likely a dedicated protector of this shepherd's herd of sheep, sticking with the group wherever they go.
The shepherd seen in the video is likely a nomad , or a Kuchi, who lives off of the animals in his herd.

Estimates place the Kuchi population in Afghanistan at 2.4 million. Few have birth certificates or other identity papers. Only four out of 100 Kuchis are able to read. Around 70% of the sheep and goats in the major livestock markets of Afghanistan come from the Kuchi, yet they only make up about 5% of the Afghan population. More than two-thirds of animals sold in Afghanistan are raised by nomads. The Kuchis are guaranteed 10 seats in parliament. During the previous rule of the Taliban in Afghanistan, Kuchis were staunch supporters of the Taliban and leader Mohammed Omar. The Director General of the Independent Directorate of Kuchis in Afghanistan, estimated that more than half of the Taliban are Kuchis as opponents of various Afghan governments have historically manipulated Kuchi dissatisfaction to incite revolution and fuel opposition to foreign involvement in Afghanistan.

The Kuchi (or Afghan, Pashtun call them Ghiljak or Kucchi) Shepherd is an Afghan livestock guardian dog, taking its name from the Kuchi [pastoral nomadic] people of Afghanistan. It is a working dog that is often seen following nomads, protecting caravans and flocks of sheep, goats, camels, and other livestock from wolves, big cats, and thieves. It is sometimes known as just a local variant of the Central Asian shepherd dog. Its status as a distinct breed is disputed, but its guardian presence in Afghanistan is undeniable.

Shērkhān Bandar (Pashto/Dari: شېرخان بندر) is an Afghan border town and dry port situated at the border between Afghanistan and Tajikistan. It is located in the Kunduz Province of Afghanistan, next to the Panj River, near the bordre with Tajikistan. The dry port links Kunduz and Kabul in Afghanistan with Dushanbe in Tajikistan. Its old name was Qezel Qal'eh. It was renamed after Sher Khan Nashir, Khan of the Kharoti Nasher clan.
The town has begun to grow rapidly after the completion, in 2007, of the Tajikistan–Afghanistan bridge at Panji Poyon. This bridge and the easy connectivity with the neighbouring country boosted trade between Afghanistan and Central Asia enormously. As many as 400 shipping trucks pass through the town every day, carrying trade goods from one country to the other. This trade has also made many local shop owners very rich.[1]
In November 2012, Afghan officials announced that they plan to build about 2,000 new residential houses, 41 business plazas including offices, shops and stores.[2]
