Písek, Czech Republic

Písek is a pleasant riverside town of 30,000 people not far from where the waters of the Otava River join the mighty Vltava below Zvíkov castle. It's far from being Bohemia's most intact historic town, but Písek does have some outstanding individual pieces of medieval architecture and many of the modern buildings that interrupt the streetscapes are interesting and attractive in their own right.

Písek is the Czech word for sand and the name refers to the gold-bearing flat-bottomed river that was the main source of the town's wealth. Thanks to finds of ceramic utensils, archaeologists believe gold was panned at Písek as far back as the bronze age, but the earliest written record is from 1336 in the time of King John of Luxembourg.

Grandhotel Zvon | Ceske Budejovice | Room Tour

Whenever I travel i always enjoy to stay a night at a place. Not only to explorer the city I'm staying in during the evening and night but also to see the difference in quality and price you can get in different cities.

So for a hotel in Ceske Budejovice I wanted a hotel that was located at the main square. This was easier said than done. Sure there are plenty hotels but some of them asked a ridiculous price and so I came out at Grandhotel Zvon.

In this video I take a look at the room, reception and of course what kind of food they serve. As a side note the drinks in the minibar were indeed for free and that was a nice surprise.

As always thanks for watching. I hope you enjoyed the video and hope to catch you in the next one!

České dráhy (ČD) or Czech Railways is the main railway operator in the Czech Republic. In 2010 its consolidated revenues reached CZK 41.0 billion (€1.6bn, $2.1bn). Revenues from passenger transport amounted to CZK 18.7 billion (65% transfer payments from the government, 25% intra-state transport, 10% international transport), revenues from freight transport operated by subsidiary ČD Cargo amounted to CZK 11.8 billion, revenues from traffic control invoiced to state-owned railway infrastructure operator SŽDC amounted to CZK 5.2 billion. With thirty-eight thousand employees[1] ČD Group is the largest Czech company by the number of employees.

The company was established in 1993, after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia as a successor of the Czechoslovak State Railways. It is a member of the International Railway Union (UIC Country Code for Czech Republic is 54), Community of European Railways and the Organization for Railways Cooperation (Asia and Europe).

Until 1 July 2008, České dráhy was the biggest employer in the Czech Republic. After experiencing regular losses and requiring government subsidies, the railway reported its first ever profit in 2007 although it receives government subsidies. Attempts to make it more efficient are currently ongoing and a recent plan to move passenger transport to an independent subsidiary was approved by the Czech government in January 2008.

ČD operates trains; fixed infrastructure (such as tracks) is managed by SŽDC. In December 2010, the Czech government proposed bringing SŽDC and ČD together in a single holding company. The government has also changed the subsidies available to ČD and SŽDC.

ČD Cargo, the cargo subsidiary, mainly transports raw materials, intermediate goods and containers. As of 2009, it is ranked in the top five largest railway cargo operators in Europe.

Bike Ride Destination: Zvikov Castle

My 28th bike ride since I started MTBiking in April 2015. Destination: Zvikov Castle, South Bohemia, Czech Republic. The ride started in Pisek, where I currently live. I went with my Scott Aspect 940 (2015) through forest trails, fire roads, sandy riverside paths, paved roads, cornfields, etc, and the castle is the prize destination! Czech Republic: Trať 298 Osoblaha - Třemešná ve Slezsku, Narrow Gauge Class 704 departs Liptan

CD narrow gauge class 704 departs Liptan towards Osoblaha on the 1240 from Tremesna Ve Slezsku to Osoblaha. Recorded 11th September 2008

Třemešná ve Slezsku -- Osoblaha Railway
Railway line Třemešná ve Slezsku - Osoblaha is a narrow gauge line connecting Třemešná ve Slezsku on railway line Krnov - Głuchołazy with border town Osoblaha. It is one of the three remaining narrow gauge railway lines with regular passenger traffic in the Czech Republic and the last narrow gauge railway operated by state-owned railway company České dráhy.

In the 1870s the owners of sugar refinery in Osoblaha were looking for a railway connection of their town. On 14. December 1898 a line from Třemešná was opened. Since 1958 the trains are operated by diesel electric locomotives T 47.0.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Osoblaha ; German: Hotzenplotz; Yiddish: האָצ׳פּלאָץ (Hotz'plotz, Hots'plots); Polish: Osobłoga) is a village in the Bruntál District of Czech Silesia in the Czech Republic in Osoblaha Hook. The village is named after the Osoblaha River of the same name.

Osoblaha municipality is situated in the northern part of the microregion being the final stop of the narrow-gauge railway. The first mention of Osoblaha dates back to 1233 with gaining its town rights in 1251 which set principles to its economical development. However, small-town prosperity (Osoblaha had a population of nearly 5000 before World War II) was halted by World War II. Although Osoblaha was the first town to be liberated in the Czech lands - by Soviet troops on 22 March 1945, still at the cost of 90% destruction of all buildings in the town. The German name of the municipality is „Hotzenplotz as this name served the German writer Otfried Preussler for naming his famous fairy-tale character of Hotzenplotz the Robber. Osoblaha has a population of roughly 1133.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Liptaň (German: Liebenthal) is a village and municipality in Bruntál District in the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic.

Liptaň municipality lies in the centre of Osoblažsko region by the narrow-gauge railway. It is probably the most attractive municipality of the region due to its location in the narrow, steep Liptaň stream valley and well kept village character with the dominating feature of the neo-gothic church. Maybe that's the reason for the original German name of „Liebenthal (free translation of „lovely valley). The first mention of Liptaň is from 1256 and currently has a population of 476.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Bruntál District (Czech: Okres Bruntál) is a district (okres) within Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic. Its capital is Bruntál, but the biggest town is Krnov. Part of the district belongs to Moravia, while another part belongs to Czech Silesia.

Beroun ; German: Beraun is a town in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. The town is part of the Prague metropolitan area. It is located 30 km southwest of Prague and has a population of 18,930 (2011). It lies at the confluence of Berounka and Litavka rivers.

Despite its small size, it is an administrative center akin to a county seat, as the center of Beroun District. It lies on the D5 motorway, which connects Prague with Pilsen and, farther afield, with Bavaria, Germany.
Early history

Beroun was originally called na Brodě (by the ford), and received the name of Bern, Berun or Verona in the 13th century, when it obtained the privileges of a city from the emperor Charles IV, who was specially attached to the place, calling it Verona mea. Under his patronage the town rapidly prospered. In 1421 Jan Žižka stormed the town, which later on was retaken and devastated by the troops of Duke Leopold, bishop of Passau. During the Thirty Years' War it was sacked by the Imperial army, the Saxons and the Swedes in turn; and in the first Silesian war the same fate befell it at the hands of the French and Bavarians.
