Port Hedland Drive, Western Australia, Australia - Part 1

#PortHedland #Hedland #WesternAustralia #Kariyarra #Marapikurrinya #PortHeadlandBeach

Port Hedland (Kariyarra: Marapikurrinya) is the second largest town in the #Pilbara region of Western Australia, with an urban population of 14,320 at June 2018 including the satellite town of South Hedland, 18 km away. It is also the site of the highest tonnage port in #Australia

Port Hedland has a natural deep anchorage harbour which, as well as being the main fuel and container receival point for the region, was seen as perfect for shipment of the iron ore being mined in the ranges located inland from the town. The ore is moved by railway from four major iron ore deposits to the east and south of the Port Hedland area. The port exported 519,408,000 tonnes of iron ore (2017-2018).[4] Other major resource activities supported by the town include the offshore natural gas fields, salt, manganese, and livestock. Major deposits of lithium are being developed and exploited south of the town as well. Grazing of cattle and sheep was formerly a major revenue earner for the region, but this has slowly declined. Port Hedland was also formerly the terminus for the WAGR Marble Bar Railway, which serviced the gold mining area of Marble Bar from July 1911 until closure on 31 October 1951. The locomotive from the Port Hedland to Marble Bar rail service is now preserved at the Kalamunda Historical Village in the south of the state. Located between Port Hedland and South Hedland are the large salt hills of Dampier Salt, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto. These large mounds have almost become a tourist attraction in their own right.

History :
Named after Captain Hedland, the Master of a ship that anchored there in 1863, Port Hedland was first developed in order to service the needs of the local pastoral industry in East Pilbara. The first jetty was built in 1896, this was extended in 1908 after the discovery of gold in the Marble Bar area.

Until the 1930s the port was predominantly used to import goods and stores for the local industries and to export pearl, shell, wool, livestock, gold, tin and copper. With the end of WW2 the port began exporting significant amounts of manganese.

The 1960s saw the development of the port by the iron ore and salt industries. Mount Goldsworthy Mining Associates, a company later absorbed by BHP Billiton, dredged an approach channel and turning basin for 65,000 DWT ships. Meanwhile, the Leslie Salt Company, from August 2001 Dampier Salt Limited (part of the Rio Tinto Group), built a land backed wharf and facilities to aid salt exports and fuel imports.

Further dredging was performed after the Mount Newman Mining Company, a subsidiary of BHP Billiton, chose Port Hedland as its export port. The new works allowed for ships up to 120,000 DWT.

Between the 1960s and today and extensive dredging and building has taken Port Hedland from a convenient anchorage to 15 berths capable of loading various ores and goods onto ships ranging from 25,000 DWT to 320,000 DWT

In 2005/06 Port Hedland became the first Australian port to export in excess of 100 million tonnes per year. In 2010/11 the port exported a record 199 million tonnes, making it the largest port by cargo tonnage in Australia.

Port Authority :
Port Hedland's harbour is managed by the Pilbara Port Authority, a state government instrumentality. The Port Authority's headquarters, control tower and heliport are at Mangrove Point, just to the west of The Esplanade at the western end of Port Hedland.

The tugboat pen, customs office and public jetty are at nearby Laurentius Point. The harbour's wharves are located on both sides of the harbour – Finucane Island to the west and Port Hedland to the east.

Geography :
The points are key references to the port and its composition. #Mangrove and #Laurentius points are already mentioned, Utah Point, and Anderson Point are located in the inner part of the harbour and exist within the complex of current berths.

Discovery Park, Port Hedland, Western Australia, Australia

#PortHedland #Hedland #WesternAustralia #Kariyarra #Marapikurrinya #PortHeadlandBeach #DiscoveryPark

From its humble beginnings with the first #Discovery Park in December 2004, #Discovery Parks Group is now the largest owner and operator of park accommodation in the country. Today we operate over 65 accommodation and holiday parks and boast more than 1,200 cabins; 2,500 powered and unpowered caravan and camping sites and 1,100 workforce accommodation rooms throughout 7 states and territories across Australia.

Our first acquisition was a portfolio of 3 parks in Western Australia (#Kalgoorlie, #Boulder and #Bunbury) closely followed by the acquisition of a further 5 properties in Victoria. The founders of Discovery had a vision of corporatising the industry and upgrading caravan parks into resorts and holiday parks through the addition of cabins and recreation facilities. A cottage industry largely owned by mums and dads, the industry has come a long way over the past 10 years.

PILBARA (WA): Global diversity hotspot🌏| Port Hedland to Onslow: Our MUST dos! ❤️

“Investment in travel is an investment in yourself” – Matthew Karsten

The epic Pilbara region has so much to offer. From vast expanses of open plains to pristine untouched beaches!

It is a mining powerhouse with hectic road and rail transport systems moving vast mineral resources between the Pilbara mines and port towns. Our adventures included over 500kms of travel through the coastal towns of Port Hedland, Roebourne, Karratha, Dampier, and Onslow, and included several free overnight campgrounds (Yule River, Cleaverville and Gnoorea Point). Our trek through the Pilbara ended at the remote Nanutarra Roadhouse, where we stopped for lunch and to refuel the car. We now only had 280km to travel to reach our next destination ... Exmouth.

Time to hit the road!

Western Australia will be Australia's biggest state with an aggregate land territory of 2,529,875 square kilometers (976,790 sq mi),and the second-biggest nation subdivision on the planet, outperformed just by Russia's Sakha Republic – be that as it may, a huge piece of it is inadequately populated.
