Top 10 Things To Do In KOTA BHARU, Kelantan

Kota Bharu, colloquially referred to as KB, is a town in Malaysia that serves as the state capital and royal seat of Kelantan. It is situated in the northeastern part of Peninsular Malaysia and lies near the mouth of the Kelantan River.

The town is home to many religious buildings, various museums, the unique architecture of the old royal palaces (still occupied by the sultan and sultanah and off-limits to visitors but viewable from outside) and former royal buildings (which can be visited). It is served by Keretapi Tanah Melayu's East Coast Line at the nearby Wakaf Bharu Terminal Station, in the town of Wakaf Bharu across the Kelantan River and Sultan Ismail Petra Airport, located in Pengkalan Chepa.

Kota Bharu was founded during the late 19th century. Before the establishment, Kota Bharu was home to Kelantan's Royal Palace, then established by Sultan Muhammad II of Kelantan in 1844 as Kelantan's state capital who wanted the new state capital built in his honour. Prior to this, Kota Bharu was known as Kuala Kelantan. Before Kota Bharu assumed the role, the Kelantanese capital was divided into two which were Kota Kubang Labu and Kota Pengkalan Datu. During the 19th century, Kelantan was a prosperous and populous state with a population of around 30,000 to 50,000 people including a thousand Chinese. Production from within the state include gold, tin ore, black pepper, areca nut, rice, rattan, bamboo, agarwood and songket. Kota Bharu acts as entrepot for goods due to its strategic location beside the Kelantan River.

During World War II, Pantai Sabak, about 10 km (6.2 mi) from Kota Bharu, was the initial landing point of the Japanese invasion forces on 8 December 1941, beginning the Battle of Kota Bharu, the first battle of the Malayan campaign. Japanese forces captured the city and would go on to successfully engage the British in jungle warfare and ultimately capture Singapore.

Kota Bharu was declared as the Cultural City on 25 July 1991 by the late Sultan Ismail Petra on the basis of two important aspects – the history of Kota Bharu and the uniqueness of its local arts and cultures. Kota Bharu was rebranded as the Islamic City (Malay: Bandar Raya Islam) by the Kelantan State Government on 1 October 2005 through its Developing With Islam (Malay: Membangun Bersama Islam) policy.

The 3 HIDDEN GEMS of Malaysia — Kuantan, Kota Bharu, Langkawi | The Travel Intern

Think you’ve seen all there is to Malaysia? Think again. This time, we bring you to three of Malaysia’s hidden gems — Kuantan, Langkawi and Kota Bharu.

But it’s not so simple, no. We were given challenges by Scoot, to split up in teams of two, and in each country:

1. The search for the most thrilling and action-packed experiences

TEAM KUANTAN
00:41 - Bukit Panorama
If you’re up for a hike, this is it. No one else to disturb your quiet time with nature.

00:59 - Sungai Pandan Waterfall
After your hike up Bukit Panorama, head to this waterfall to cool off and ease the tension in your body~

TEAM KOTA BHARU
01:16 - Perhentian Islands (Three Point Snorkelling)
Just an hour away from the main city of Kota Bharu, there lies the beautiful Perhentian Islands, a snorkelling haven, if you must. :-)

01:27 - Windmill Point
The stairs can get quite sketchy, so be careful if you’re headed there. But at the top, you get this panoramic view of the teal-blue waters of Perhentian Islands!

TEAM LANGKAWI
01:41 - Umgawa Zipline
You get to zip past canopies and canopies and even a beautiful waterfall!

01:58 - Langkawi Skycab
02:05 - Langkawi Skybridge
Take one of the steepest cable cars up to the Langkawi Skybridge for the best views ever!

2. The hunt for the best dining experiences

TEAM KOTA BHARU
02:18 - Siti Khadijah Market
If you want local fare, this is where it’s at. Fresh produce and a whole load of other food stuffs for ya!

TEAM KUANTAN
02:35 - Restoran Hoi Yin
Probably one of the best curry in Kota Bharu — with the creamy curry and the tender meat. Absolute yumz~

02:47 - Kula Cakes
TRY THEIR MANGO CHEESECAKE!! ‘Nuff said.

02:55 - Ana Ikan Bakar Petai
Petai can come across pretty strong, but this particular dish served here is just SEDAPPPPP. Even the team who weren’t huge fans of Petai were converted!

TEAM LANGKAWI
03:11 - Sunset Dinner Cruise
The best way to end the day — not only with a cruise, but a SUNSET DINNER cruise. With the most gorgeous views along with a satisfied tummy.

03:33 - Pantai Cenang
The nightlife here in Langkawi is pretty damned hype if we have to say so ourselves!!

3. Visit to the most iconic attractions

TEAM LANGKAWI
03:52 - Kilim Karst Geoforest
Spend the morning speed-boating through the mangroves and visiting fish farms and caves.

TEAM KOTA BHARU
04:09 - Wat Phothivihan
This is where the largest reclining Buddha in Asia sleeps!
04:20 - Wat Machimmaram

TEAM KUANTAN
04:25 - Sungai Lembing Mines
Take a tour through an actual tin mine! Imagine if it were completely pitch black…

Kelantan is a state of Malaysia. The capital is Kota Bharu and royal seat is Kubang Kerian. The honorific name of the state is Darul Naim (The Blissful Abode).

Kelantan is located in the north-eastern corner of the peninsula. Kelantan, which is said to translate as the Land of Lightning (see alternate theories below), is an agrarian state with green paddy fields, rustic fishing villages and casuarina-lined beaches. Kelantan is home to some of the most ancient archaeological discoveries in Malaysia, including several prehistoric aboriginal settlements.

Kelantan cuisine is influenced quite a bit by the cuisine of Thailand and it’s popular among people from Malaysia. A lot of the visitors which Kelantan receives come to the area in order to taste its recipes, which are not available in other areas. One of the things which their kitchen is based on is sugar and the result is that most dishes from the area are sweet.

Another thing about it is the fact that it uses a lot of coconut milk, more than any other cuisine from Malaysia. Their curries are creamy and rich and their taste is based on the Thai cuisine.

Below are some of the incredible food that I have tried:

Nasi tumpang is rice dish that origin from Kelantan. Nasi tumpang is rice with different layer of dishes wrapped in a cone shape with banana leaf packed. Traditionally, it was staple food for travelers or farmers in Kelantan to bring to work. It is packed tightly consisting an omelette, beef or fish floss, and shrimp or fish local curry, sweet sambal gravy and cucumbers.

Akok is one of the famous traditional food in Kelantan, Malaysia. It can be eaten as snack or as a dessert. It is made with flour, sugar, eggs, and coconut milk.

Nasi dagang is a Malaysian dish consisting of rice steamed in coconut milk, fish curry and extra ingredients such as pickled cucumber and carrots. It is a well-known breakfast food in the states on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, southern Thai Malay provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat and across the Indonesian border in Natuna and Anambas, Riau Islands. The most famous nasi dagang comes from Tumpat in Kelantan and Kampung Ladang in Kuala Terengganu.

This video will discuss about Malaysia's Top 10 Destinations.

Although Malaysia is often ranked among the most visited countries in Asia, China consistently occupies the top spot. Malaysia is often avoided by long-term budget visitors as being too pricey (mostly because alcohol does cost more than in Thailand).

Number 10. Selangor.

Selangor is Malaysia's most developed and populated state, leading up to the sprawling urban sprawl of Kuala Lumpur. Here you may find a Formula One racetrack, the National Zoo of Malaysia, and enormous leisure complexes, including an indoor winter park.
The First World Hotel and Plaza is the world's largest hotel, with 10,500 rooms and a theme park.

Number 9. Langkawi.

Pulau Langkawi, situated off Malaysia's northwest coast, is one of the top island attractions for both foreign tourists and Malaysians.
Langkawi, Malaysia's answer to Phuket, Thailand's busiest island, has an airport, ferries connecting it to the mainland, and a massive tourist infrastructure.
Because beer is duty-free, it is often just slightly more expensive than bottled water!

Number 8. Tioman Island.

Tioman Island, located on Malaysia's east coast near Singapore, is a one-of-a-kind island resort. Accommodation and excellent diving are surprisingly inexpensive; development is modest for such a lovely island.
The most common way to travel between beaches is by boat, unless you're up for a jungle hike through the interior.

Number 7. Cameron Highlands.

Malaysia Goes Green Cameron Highlands is one of the few places in Southeast Asia where you'll need a jacket or a warm blanket at night. After sweating through tropical climates, you may appreciate the change in climate.
Strawberry farms, butterfly gardens, and flower greenhouses are all enjoyable diversion in Cameron Highlands.

Number 6. Taman Negara.

Taman Negara means national park in Malay, and that is precisely what it is! Taman Negara is Malaysia's first national park and one of the oldest tropical rainforests on the planet. A long canopy walkway allows visitors to see life in the trees that is not visible from the ground.

Number 5. Malacca.

Malaysia's Peranakan city of Malacca, spelled locally as Melaka, is a notable visit for cultural, historical, and colonial monuments. The historic town of Malacca seldom disappoints visitors.
Many Malacca businesses and organizations are closed on Tuesdays. So plan your visit accordingly!

Number 4. Malaysian Borneo.

A cheap, short trip away from exchanging polluted concrete for verdant jungles and plentiful animals! Visitors to Malaysia sometimes stay to the mainland, overlooking the natural delights of the world's third-largest island, which is just a short flight away.

Number 3. The Perhentian Islands.

Backpackers and budget travelers like Malaysia's Perhentian Islands, particularly Perhentian Kecil, the smaller of the two islands, where beautiful beaches and superb snorkeling/diving fill the day before the nightlife begins.
Accommodation on Perhentian Kecil might be difficult to locate during the busy month of July, although the islands are generally deserted during the winter months owing to rain and dangerous waves.

Number 2. Penang.

Malaysians are right to be proud of their large west coast island. Georgetown, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has plenty to offer in terms of museums, a seaside fort, historic homes, and, most importantly, a famous street-food scene.
Penang is regarded as one of the best places in Southeast Asia to sample various types of delicious street food.

Number 1. Kuala Lumpur

You'll almost probably fly into Kuala Lumpur if you visit Malaysia, so this is a no-brainer. Nonetheless, unlike some other large Asian cities where people come and go as quickly as possible, Kuala Lumpur is a great destination in its own right.
Kuala Lumpur offers a diverse range of neighborhoods to explore.

I stayed at the beautiful Senja Bay on Coral Beach, which was the perfect spot for relaxation and soaking up the sun. But of course, I couldn't resist exploring the rest of the island. I headed over to backpacker haven Long Beach, where the energy was contagious. There were so many fun activities to do, like beach volleyball and paddleboarding but of course I headed straight for the food.

One of the highlights of my trip was going on a snorkeling tour. The crystal-clear water was teeming with colorful fish and coral, and I even got to see a sea turtle up close! It was truly a magical experience. After all that swimming, I worked up quite the appetite. I headed over to the Fishermen's Village for lunch by taking a walk through the jungle that connects all the beaches through a series of paths, and let me tell you, the seafood was so tender. I also visited the Floating Mosque, which was simply breathtaking. The architecture was stunning, and the peaceful atmosphere was a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of the island.

Overall, my trip to the Perhentian Islands was unforgettable. The natural beauty and warm hospitality of the locals made it a trip I'll never forget. I can't wait to go back and explore even more of this amazing destination! Next time I'm heading to Redang!
