Ep. 271: Iowa Great Lakes | RV travel camping
When you think of Iowa, you probably envision endless rows of corn. But there's a whole different side of Iowa that we share in this episode from Iowa Great Lakes, a major summer tourism area! This region is a plethora of lakes along the Iowa/Minnesota border surrounding the towns of Spirit Lake and Okoboji, formed 13,500 years ago by the Des Moines lobe ice sheet as it pressed southward into Iowa. You'll find all manner of camping, boating, dockside bars and restaurants, and even an old-fashioned amusement park that we'll explore from our campsite in a beautiful county park.

Cedar Falls, IA | A 4K City Walking Tour
Cedar Falls is a city in Black Hawk County, Iowa. Cedar Falls was first settled in March 1845 by brothers-in-law William Sturgis and Erasmus D. Adams. Initially, the city was named Sturgis Falls. The city was called Sturgis Falls until it was merged with Cedar City (another city on the other side of the Cedar River), creating Cedar Falls. Because of the availability of water power, Cedar Falls developed as a milling and industrial center prior to the Civil War. The establishment of the Civil War Soldiers' Orphans Home in Cedar Falls changed the direction in which the city developed when, following the war, it became the first building on the campus of the Iowa State Normal School (now the University of Northern Iowa).

Trout Fishing in Northeast Iowa
Fayette County is home to 10 spring-fed creeks that comprise over 13 miles of fishable water. Located in the heart of Iowa’s trout region, Fayette County’s tranquil landscape is home to some of the most popular trout fishing destinations in Iowa. Anglers are attracted to this area for its high concentration of prime trout waters, fish counts, trout stocking plants
and year-round opportunities to catch brook, brown and rainbow trout. Iowa DNR efforts have also contributed to making this region of the state a world-class trout fishery. On average, the Iowa DNR stocks approximately 31,000 catchable trout into catchable stocked streams within Fayette County from April 1 - October 31. Of the stocked catchable trout, approximately 83 percent are rainbows and 17 percent are brooks. The Iowa DNR also
stocks over 13,000 fingerlings in streams with public-owned access. Public streams stocked with fingerlings in Fayette County include Brush Creek, Otter Creek and Glovers Creek. In addition, excess brood trout, or adult trout that typically measure between 14 and 24 inches in length and weigh anywhere from two to eight pounds, are released into streams each year. For more information about trout fishing in Fayette County please visit our website: or call (563) 426-5740.
