MAURITANIA - Ouadane to Chinguetti

One of my favorite Mauritania drives: through the desert from Oudane to Chinguetti. Both stunning, historic towns all even better with stopping at Tenouchert oasis and learning about proper local life.

Life In a Floating Slum in Africa - Makoko

The capital of Nigeria, Lagos, is home to a remarkable yet starkly contrasting community known as Makoko - a floating slum that vividly embodies both the resilience of the human spirit and the dire consequences of urban poverty. Beneath the surface of Makoko's waterborne vibrancy lies a harsher truth: the waters, a vital life source, are tainted with sewage and pollution. This environmental crisis is a daily battle for the residents, who face the constant threat of waterborne diseases. The lack of adequate sanitation facilities means that much of the waste and sewage from the densely populated settlement ends up directly in the lagoon, compounding the challenges of maintaining a healthy living environment. Poverty in Makoko is pervasive and profound. Yet amidst these hardships, the spirit of Makoko endures, presenting a deep and complex life narrative in one of Africa's most dynamic urban landscapes. Let us journey to Makoko, and explore how people live in the largest floating slum in the world.

map of Mauritania Africa

Mauritania ; Arabic: موريتانيا, Mūrītānyā, French: Mauritanie; Berber: Agawej or Cengit; Pulaar: 𞤃𞤮𞤪𞤭𞤼𞤢𞤲𞤭 Moritani; Wolof: Gànnaar; Soninke: Murutaane), officially the Islamic Republic of Mauritania (Arabic: الجمهورية الإسلامية الموريتانية), is a sovereign state in Northwest Africa. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Western Sahara to the north and northwest, Algeria to the northeast, Mali to the east and southeast, and Senegal to the southwest. Mauritania is the eleventh largest country in Africa, and 90 percent of its territory is situated in the Sahara. Most of its population of 4.4 million lives in the temperate south of the country, with roughly one third concentrated in the capital and largest city, Nouakchott, located on the Atlantic coast.

The country's name derives from the ancient Berber kingdom of Mauretania, located in present-day Morocco and Algeria. Berbers occupied what is now Mauritania beginning in the third century AD. Arabs conquered the area in the eighth century, bringing Islam, Arab culture, and the Arabic language. In the early 20th century, Mauritania was colonized by France as part of French West Africa. It achieved independence in 1960, but has since experienced recurrent coups and periods of military dictatorship. The most recent coup, in 2008, was led by General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who won subsequent presidential elections in 2009 and 2014. He was succeeded by Mohamed Ould Ghazouani following the 2019 elections, which were considered Mauritania's first peaceful transition of power since independence.

Mauritania is culturally and politically part of the Arab world: it is a member of the Arab League and Arabic is the sole official language. Reflecting its colonial heritage, French is widely spoken and serves as a lingua franca. The official religion is Islam, and almost all inhabitants are Sunni Muslims. Despite its prevailing Arab identity, Mauritanian society is multiethnic: the Bidhan, or so-called white moors, make up 30 percent of the population, while the Haratin, or so-called black moors, comprise 40 percent. Both groups reflect a fusion of Arab-Berber ethnicity, language, and culture. The remaining 30 percent of the population is made up of various sub-Saharan ethnic groups.

Despite an abundance of natural resources, including iron ore and petroleum, Mauritania remains poor; its economy is based primarily on agriculture, livestock, and fishing. Mauritania is known for its poor human rights record, most notably the continued practice of slavery, a result of a historical caste system between the Bidhan and Haratin. It was the last country in the world to abolish slavery, in 1981 and criminalized it only in 2007. Control is tightly concentrated in the executive branch of the central government, but a series of national and municipal elections since 1992 have produced limited decentralization. These regions are subdivided into 44 departments (moughataa). The regions and capital district (in alphabetical order) and their capitals are:

Cosa spinge questi uomini a rinunciare a tutto? E perché il Monte Athos resta uno dei luoghi più inaccessibili e misteriosi del pianeta?

Buona visione!❤

Mali Travel Overland in a Land Rover Defender (Djenne & Bamako)

We are continuing our Overland Africa journey as we drive our land rover Defender TDI from the UK to South Africa. We have survived nearly falling off the sand dunes into the sea in Mauritania and now from the remote city of Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania, on the western side of Africa we have to cross Mauritania to get into Mali, and from Mali onwards across the Sahara to Niger.

Now in the 1970s a road was built right across Mauritania from the coast all the way inland, linking up west Africa to east Africa with a road right across the southern Sahara desert and it was joyfully dubbed the Road of Hope. Now this was 2000 so we'd read about the road of hope so we thought this is our route, there really is only one route across the centre of Mauritania to get to Mali.

It was quite an amazing change as you go south because like Mauritania before a lot of Mali is also in the Sahara desert but also there's the big rivers that come up from the south of Mali, and as you come from the desert the barren desolate emptiness of the Sahara desert into lush green trees and it's so amazing to see the vibrancy of life that suddenly appears.

Mali is famous for the Monday market in Djenné, a market which is completely assembled and dismantled every week in front of the famous Djenné mosque by the locals who come in from all directions so that they can trade their goods with each other.

We dropped south down into Bamako, the capital of Mali, a big busy African city, and after getting our visas for Niger headed on to an amazing overnight experience involving the best chicken and chips meal ever and a sensational football match at a border town before crossing the border into Niger.

Land Rover Africa Overland
--------------------------------------------
Twenty years ago my wife and I packed up our life in the UK and set off to drive overland in our Land Rover Defender with the aim of driving all the way to the Cape Town in South Africa, a journey which will take us from coast to coast along the length and breadth of Africa.

Because this journey was twenty years ago, there were no smartphones, no google maps, and no digital cameras. The photos taken on the journey were on transparencies, designed to be projected. I have taken photographs of some of those slides for the purpose of showing in this video.

Previously in the Africa Overland Series:
Africa Overland Part 4: Mauritanian Minefields and Beach Drive
Having made it to Mauritania we face our biggest challenge yet as we dig & drive through a Mauritanian minefield, follow the railroad to the beach road and nearly lose the land rover to the Atlantic Ocean.

Buona visione!❤

Mauritania - A Three Week Itinerary

Chinguetti is the seventh holiest city of Islam and exudes a similar attraction like Timbuktu. Together with Oualata, Ouadane and Tichit it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Enough reasons to visit these cities on a private tour, since public transport is erractic in Mauritania. After a couple of days in the capital Nouakchott to acclimatize we head with our crew (Abdou, Khalifa, Mounir) in Eastern direction to Nema. From there it is all offroad to Oualata and Tichit and further on to Tidjikja, where we hit the tarmac again. On the way we get to explore the neolithic settlement Akreijit. After spending the night at the ancient trading post of Ksar El Barka we try to get a glimpse of the crocodiles at the Guelta de Matmata, but we are not lucky. Driving to Rachid and then to Terjit we pass by the impressive Chatou sand dunes and the Tifoujar Pass. We get to see Fort Saganne where Gerard Depardieu acted as an officer of the Foreign Legion. Finally we reach fabled Chinguetti and get to see one of the many libraries that survived from the town's heyday. After a trip to the Eye of the Sahara, that is even visible from outer space we are in Ouadane in time for the celebrations of the Mauritanian independence day. Then we head in Western direction and travel along the tracks of the legendary iron ore train that plies between Zouerat and Nouadhibou. Spending the night at the monolith Ben Amira is an experience of its own. After a short stop in the port of Nouadhibou we travel to Tafarit in the nature reserve of Banc d'Arguin. Eating fresh fish and sailing on a fishing boat makes for a nice change on our road trip. After returning to Nouakchott we spend time in the markets looking for African style fabrics that we can take back home.
