Where Locals Eat the Best Tacos at Taquería El Mexicano!
“You know what we do—Film, eat, repeat; let’s go find something tasty to eat!” 🇲🇽
In this episode of Melton's on the Move, we’re diving into the heart of Cozumel to uncover a local secret! After asking our host for a true local recommendation, we ended up at Taquería El Mexicano—a spot where Cozumel residents bring their families for the most authentic tacos on the island. 🌮
Forget the tourist spots! We wanted to experience real Mexican flavors, so we went all-in on the menu, trying everything from Pastor and Tripa to Buche and Chirroz. Each bite brought us deeper into the island's rich culture and traditions, proving that the best food is often just a few steps off the beaten path.
What We Tried:
Pastor – Perfectly marinated and packed with flavor!
Tripa – A crispy, savory delight for true taco lovers.
Mixto – A delicious combo showcasing a variety of flavors.
Buche – Smooth and tender, a must-try for adventurous eaters.
Chirroz – Seasoned to perfection, with that classic Mexican spice.
Every taco was made with fresh ingredients, expertly seasoned, and served in a no-frills setting that felt like a true slice of local life. Whether you’re a taco connoisseur or just looking to try something different, Taquería El Mexicano delivers on all fronts.
Why You Should Visit Taquería El Mexicano
Not only is the food incredible, but Taquería El Mexicano is also a welcoming spot where the locals gather to eat, laugh, and connect. We loved watching the cooks expertly prepare each dish with care and tradition. This taquería reminded us that some of the most memorable dining experiences come from small, family-run places that prioritize flavor and community over flashy decor.
So, if you’re planning a trip to Cozumel and want to eat like a local, let our video be your guide! Take a short trip inland, away from the main tourist areas, and discover the hidden culinary gems waiting for you.
Tips for Visiting Taquería El Mexicano:
Ask for Recommendations – Don’t be shy to ask locals what they love. You’ll often find gems like we did!
Try Something New – Step out of your comfort zone with a dish like Tripa or Buche; you might be surprised!
Bring Cash – Smaller, family-owned places often prefer cash, so come prepared.
Enjoy the Atmosphere – The best meals are enjoyed slowly; soak in the vibrant local vibe while you eat!

CANCUN, MEXICO | 5 Must-Do Day Trips from Cancun
Cancun is considered to be the heart of the Mexican Caribbean. At this beautiful destination, you’ll find spectacular white-sand beaches, a turquoise sea, and a vibrant nightlife, which attracts millions of tourists every year. But unfortunately most tourists don’t venture out of the famed Hotel Zone. If you’re staying in Cancun and looking for unique activities to do, we highly recommend you head out of the town at least once during your trip! Cancun is the perfect location to explore nearby towns, Mayan ruins, and natural attractions from. In this video we highlight 5 must-do day trips from Cancun:
5. Río Lagartos & Las Coloradas
Located about 3.5 hours from Cancun, Río Lagartos and Las Coloradas make for a great day trip. Río Lagartos is basically a fishing village located along the Gulf Coast. It’s filled with wildlife and pristine nature. You can explore its protected biosphere by taking a boat tour where you will observe hundreds of flamingos, crocodiles, and pelicans. Right outside the biosphere, you can find the pink water lagoons called “Las Coloradas”. These pink lakes are formed by salt mines and make for stunning pictures.
☑️ Book tour:
4. Tulum
From the Tulum Ruins to the unique Kaan Luum lagoon, the Calavera Cenote and the Gran Cenote, you have plenty of options here. Tulum is a 2 hour drive away from Cancun and can be easily reached by local collectivo or the tourist ADO bus. Alternatively, you can also book a day tour to get here.
☑️ Book tour:
3. Bacalar
Famous for its immense deep-blue lake, Bacalar is located in the south of Quintana Roo, near the border of Belize. It takes about 4 hours to get here by tour bus, so ideally spend more than 1 day here if you can. However, it’s still doable to get there and then back to Cancun in a day if you get an early start. It’s best explored during a boat tour, so you can experience and swim in the different colors and cenotes in the lake.
☑️ Book tour:
2. Isla Mujeres
Only a 20 minute boat ride from Cancun, Isla Mujeres is the closest day trip recommendation on our list. The island is a beautiful, peaceful paradise known for its white-sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and the friendliest locals in the Mexican Caribbean. It’s also a popular scuba diving and snorkeling destination, with the impressive MUSA Underwater Museum of Art and the beautiful Manchones Reef near the shore.
☑️ Book tour:
1. Chichén Itzá
Our favorite day trip from Cancun is to Chichen Itza, one of the 7 World Wonders. This archeological site is located about 3 hours away from Cancun by tour bus. Chichen Itza was once a thriving community of Mayan people and boasts an interesting history that you can’t miss.
