A trip down Main Street, Massena, NY
The township of Massena was officially created by Legislature on March 3, 1802. However, its first settlement is dated back in 1792 when Frenchmen came up the St. Lawrence River from Montreal in search of lumber for shipbuilding.
This sawmill was erected in 1792, and the site is now occupied by a stone house built by Captain Haskell in 1825. However, Massena did not have its official name until that day in 1802, despite the traffic that ran through it for the lumber. Prior to the town name of Massena, Mohawk Indians called the Massena settlement Nikentsiake, which with its meaning of “where the fish live”, lead many to assume that the once barren grounds of Massena were great for fishing along the St. Lawrence River.[1]
This official Legislature date means Massena is estimated to be about 215 years old now in 2017. Massena is named after André Masséna, a military commander under Napoleon Bonaparte and hero of the Battle of Rivoli (a key victory for the French against Austria), who was never actually directly involved with the United States.[2] In fact, he probably had no idea the town was even honored in his name.[3]

Lock Info:
The Eisenhower Lock is one of the seven canal locks on the St Lawrence River leg of the St Lawrence Seaway.[1] This lock provides a 38 foot lift for ships heading upstream.[2] It is one of two locks located near Massena, New York.
The lock was constructed to bypass the portion of the St Lawrence River known as the Long Sault. The US Army Corps of Engineers planned and supervised the construction.[3] Actual construction was performed by Peter Kiewit Sons Co., Morrison-Knudsen Co., Perini Corp., Utah Construction Co., and Walsh Construction Co.[4][5]
The lock was originally named the Robinson Bay Lock and was renamed after President Dwight Eisenhower after his term was over. The lock, and the nearby Bertrand H. Snell Lock are part of the Wiley-Dondero Canal. Construction was complicated by the need to not interrupt the waterflow to nearby hydro-electric installations.
The St. Lawrence Seaway was dedicated on 26 June 1959 at a ceremony in Montreal. Key speakers were President Dwight Eisenhower and Queen Elizabeth II.[6][7] The following day there was a second dedication ceremony at the Eisenhower Lock. Key attendees were Queen Elizabeth II, Vice President Richard Nixon and New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller.[8][9]
In 1972 a tanker, the MV Venus, exploded while transiting the lock.[10]
On June 18, 2015, the cruise ship Saint Laurent collided with the lock, causing it to be drained, and closed for almost two days.[11][12][13][14]

Crossing US-Canada Border- Driving From Massena NY, USA Into Cornwall Ontario, Canada
Cornwall Island is an island in the Saint Lawrence River, directly south of the city of Cornwall. The island is located completely within Canada, but it is also part of the Akwesasne Mohawk reserve, which straddles the Canada–United States border and the Quebec – Ontario border. The Seaway International Bridge, with a channel crossing on each side of the island, provides road access to Cornwall Island from both Canada and the United States.
Massena is a town in St. Lawrence County, New York, United States. Massena is along the county's northern border, just south of the St. Lawrence River and the Three Nations Crossing of the Canada–United States border. The population was 12,883 at the 2010 census.[3] The town of Massena contains a village also named Massena.
Cornwall is a city in Eastern Ontario, Canada, and the seat of the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry. Cornwall is Ontario's easternmost city, located on the Saint Lawrence River in the Quebec City–Windsor Corridor along Ontario Highway 401, and is the urban centre for surrounding communities, including Long Sault and Ingleside to the west, Mohawk Territory of Akwesasne to the south, St. Andrew's and Avonmore to the north, and Glen Walter, Martintown, Apple Hill, Williamstown, and Lancaster to the east.
Cornwall lies on the 45th parallel, approximately 100 km (62 mi) southeast of Ottawa, the national capital, 120 km (75 mi) southwest of Montreal, Quebec's largest city, and 440 km (270 mi) northeast of Toronto, the provincial capital and Canada's largest city. It is named after the English Duchy of Cornwall; the City's coat of arms is based on that of the duchy with its colours reversed and the addition of a royal tressure, a Scottish symbol of royalty.
Its largest industries include logistics distribution and call centres.
