Tata→Tarján→Bicske→Etyek→Martonvásár (Hungary) (Full cycling route) [4K]

A hot summer ride on the hills between Tata and Martonvásár, first passing through the village of Agostyán, then rolling along the Tarján-Csabdi-Bicske-Etyek cycle path, and finally testing the newly completed Etyek-Gyúró-Tordas section of the Budapest-Balaton (BuBa) cycle path.

Date: 18 June 2022
Distance: 70 km
Difference in level: 700 m
Duration: 6 hours
Weather: 27°C, sunny
Departure: Tata, railway station
Arrival: Martonvásár, railway station
In between: Tata, Agostyán, Tarján, Csabdi, Bicske, Botpuszta, Etyek, Gyúró, Tordas, Martonvásár.

The tour starts at the railway station in Tata, from where we will cycle through some local streets along the Agostyán road, which was completed in 2020, to the village. From here, we continue on a low-traffic road along the longest climb of the route to Gorba-top, passing by the Eco-Village and the Agostyáni Arboretum. From the top, you can finally start rolling past Vértestolna all the way to Tarján, where the high-quality cycle path, opened in 2017, begins. Passing through ploughs, fields and rolling hills, we roll down to the Tarján fishing lake and continue to the Vasztély dam, where we reach the public road again, which has been completely renovated and has very little traffic.

After passing through Csabdi, we are back on the exclusive cycle path, crossing the M1 motorway and passing the Csabdi reservoir. On the outskirts of Bicske between the fishing lake and Galagonyás, we continue on the closed service road alongside road 1, which is not very good quality, to the junction with the traffic at Etyek. The road leads straight into Etyek, but it is worth turning off at Botpuszta to the lake for a break. If you choose this route, it is important to know that you can only cycle on gravel here. Shortly after the fish pond you will arrive in Etyek, where the newly built Budapest-Balaton (BuBa) bicycle highway passes through.

The BuBa from Budapest to Etyek is completely finished and officially opened, from here to Kajászó the final stage of the works is still in progress, but the road is passable. It's worth noting that the hills of Etyek can be sweaty, and the route between Etyek and Gyúró is not necessarily family-friendly due to the many hills.

Soon after Gyúro we reach Tordas, from where we can soon continue the BUdapest-Balaton journey to Lake Velence and all the way to Lake Balaton. Or we can roll on to Martonvásár, from where we can easily take the train to Budapest, Székesfehérvár or the Hungarian sea.

Fort Csesznek - Hungary 4K

This Hungarian fortress was built in the great castle construction period, after the 1241-42 invasion of the Tatars, by Jakab Cseszneky, the swordbearer of King Béla IV. Between 1326 and 1392 it was a royal castle, when King Sigismund offered it to the House of Garai in lieu of the Macsó Banate.

In 1482 the male line of the Garai family died out, and King Matthias Corvinus donated the castle to the Szapolyai family. In 1527, Baron Bálint Török became its owner.

During the 16th century, the Csábi, Szelestey and Wathay families were in possession of Csesznek. In 1561, Lőrinc Wathay held back successfully the siege of the Ottomans. However, in 1594 the castle was taken over and occupied by Turkish troops. In 1598 the Hungarians recaptured it.

In 1635, Dániel Esterházy bought the castle and village and from that time on Csesznek was the property of the Esterházy family until 1945.

Wonders of Hungary - Brunszvik Manor House and surroundings, Martonvásár

The Brunszvik Manor in Martonvásár is not only interesting for its architecture but also an important site in terms of cultural history since Beethoven, the famous composer, maintained a good relationship with the noble family that owned the building and visited them several times, so it is no coincidence that there is a memorial museum within and that music events are held regularly in the beautiful 70-hectare park. But the location is also appealing for another reason: the manor is under the management of the Agricultural Research Center of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, so an agricultural exhibition has been created here, which is at least as interesting as the cultural attractions. Our series Wonders of Hungary continues with this beauteous location; we hope you will love this episode too.

The castle and park where Beethoven spent a'lot of time ,Martonvasar, Hungary

Castle park walking tour
Beethoven, as the piano teacher of the Brunswick girls, visited the castle several times. In 1799, Baroness Anna Seeberg, born Antalné Bruszvik, a widow, went to the imperial city with her 24-year-old daughter Teréz and 21-year-old Jozefin with the undisclosed aim of marrying one or the other of her daughters. It was then that he asked Beethoven to teach the girls to play the piano. Beethoven did not like to teach. He was of the opinion that those who cannot compose should teach. But he made an exception with the girls. Beethoven dealt with the girls for 16 days. Through the girls, Beethoven met Ferenc Brunszvik, the girls' brother, who later became his friend and patron. He visited Martonvásár three times until 1808. In 1806, he finished the Appassionata here, which he dedicated to Ferenc Brunszvik. Beethoven had tender ties to Jozefin, as evidenced by the 14 letters that were found at the beginning of the 20th century. And Teréz Brunszvik deeply respected Beethoven.

Martonvásár - Brunszvik / Habsburg - Dreher Castle - Beethoven Museum

This castle, built in 1785, was for many years the family seat of Count Antal Brunswick. It is said that one of his children, Ferenc, became friends with Beethoven, to such an extent that he was one of the rare people to be able to use the familiar you form with the master. In the castle, the Beethoven Emlékmúzeum provides a reminder of the composer's stays in the house. Restored in 1870, the castle is today neo-Gothic in style. Every summer, concerts are held in the castle grounds on the island in the middle of the lake.

Hungary’s only Beethoven Memorial Museum created in the castle presents Beethoven’s correspondence with the female members of the Brunszvik family and also documents connected to the lives of the artist and the family.

BRUNSZVIK CASTLE 4K | Beethoven Museum | Brunszvik-kastély | Hungary

Full tour of the Brunszvik Castle, Beethoven Museum, and the Castle Park.

The construction of the snow-white-walled castle began in 1784, but it was not until the early 1800s that the estate passed into the hands of the famed Brunszvik family, who then changed the edifice, which originally contained Baroque-style components, for decades.
At the turn of the century, brewer Antal Dreher purchased the building, which had been transformed into a military hospital during WWII. Currently, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences manages both the castle and the surrounding property.

The 70-hectare English garden, designed by Ferenc Brunszvik, is the most beautiful portion of the castle. It contains rare trees such as dwarf almonds, cedars, swamp cypresses, Japanese acacias, sycamores, and alders. Heinrich Nebbien, who also designed City Park, was the landscape architect of the English Garden.

The water of the Szent László Creek, which runs through the park, has been dammed, and an island has been built in the middle of the lake. The island also has an outdoor stage where concerts are staged on a regular basis.

New updated ticket prices are:

2500 HUF (6.2 EUR) for adults
1500 HUF (4 EUR) for children

Parking is free.

Castle of Sirok - HUNGARY - 4K

The fortress stands on the border of the Bükk Mountains and the Mátra Mountains over the place where the valley of Tarna creek becomes wider. Its Slavic name may originate from here: Sirok. It was built in mediaeval times in the valley of Tarna creek where it was possible to block and check the Northern roads, although it was mainly a squire's private castle with very little strategic value.
The settlement was founded later; written sources first mention the castle in 1267, while the name of the settlement first appears in written form in 1302 as Sirák.

The castle is divided into two different parts. The upper castle originally had inner columns, and its ground-plan was irregularly shaped. It was protected by a stone wall 10 metres below its level, carved into the rocks surrounding it. The lower castle with its three right angle ground-plan, ancient, Italian-type forts was erected later. Excavations proved that it had been a private fortress first and it became part of the border castle system later. Its oldest part is the residential keep, which was placed in the middle of the upper castle. The double barrel vaults, which can still be seen in the middle of the upper castle, make one conclude that as a rule with these types of fortresses it contained a bigger hall (knights’ hall) for receptions and conclaves, probably in the residential keep.
Real protection was provided by the lower castle, where three ancient Italian forts were erected. The forts on the corners were built of broad stone.
The rocks below the castle contain some hive niches that can be seen in other parts of this region as well.
