Bago, formerly Pegu, is a city and the capital of Bago Division in Burma (or Myanmar). It is located 50 miles (80 km) from Yangon and has a population of 220,000.
According to legend, two Mon princess from Thaton founded Bago in 573 AD. It was written in the chronicles that eight years after enlightenment, Lord Buddha along with his disciples flew around the Southeast Asian countries. On his return journey while crossing the Gulf of Martaban, which happened to be at low tide, he saw two golden sheldrakes sitting, female on top of male, on a peak of land protruding out of the sea just enough for a bird's perch. Viewing this strange phenomenon, he predicted to his disciples that one day a country where his doctrine would thrive would come into existence in this vast sea area. That part of the sea, when it was silted up and ready for habitation approximately 1500 years after the prediction, was colonized by Mons from the Thaton Kingdom. Thus, the Mons became the first rulers of this country known in history as Hongsawatoi (Pali Hamsavati). Other variations on the name include Hanthawaddy, Hanthawady and Handawaddy; and in Thai หงสาวดี Hongsawadi.
The earliest mention of this city in history is by the Arab geographer Ibn Khudadhbin around 850 AD. At the time, the Mon capital had shifted to Thaton. The area came under rule of the Burmese from Bagan in 1056. After the collapse of Bagan to the Mongols in 1287, the Mon regained their independence.
In Lower Burma, a Mon dynasty established itself first at Martaban and then at Pegu. During the reign of king Rajadhirat (13831421) Ava and Pegu were involved in continuous warfare. The peaceful reign of Queen Baña Thau (Burmese: Shin Saw Bu; 1453-72) came to an end when she chose the Buddhist monk Dhammazedi (1472-92) to succeed her. Under Dhammazedi Pegu became a centre of commerce and Theravada Buddhism.
From 1369-1539, Hanthawaddy was the capital of the Mon Kingdom of Ramanadesa, which covered all of what is now Lower Burma. The area came under Burman control again in 1539, when it was annexed by King Tabinshweti to his Kingdom of Taungoo. The kings of Taungoo made Bago their royal capital from 1539-1599 and again in 1613-1634, and used it as a base for repeated invasions of Siam. As a major seaport, the city was frequently visited by Europeans, who commented on its magnificence. The Burmese capital relocated to Ava in 1634. In 1740, the Mon revolted and briefly regained their independence, but Burmese King Alaungpaya (or U Aungzeya) sacked and completely destroyed the city (along with Mon independence) in 1757.
Bago was rebuilt by King Bodawpaya (1782-1819), but by then the river had shifted course, cutting the city off from the sea. It never regained its previous importance. After the Second Anglo-Burmese War, the British annexed Bago in 1852. In 1862, the province of British Burma was formed, and the capital moved to Yangon. The name Bago is spelt peh kou literally. The substantial differences between the colloquial and literary pronunciations, as with Burmese words, was a reason of the British corruption Pegu.
In 1911, Hanthawaddy was described as a district in the Bago (or Pegu) division of Lower Burma. It lay in the home district of Rangoon, from which the town was detached to make a separate district in 1880. It had an area of 3,023 square miles (7,830 km2), with a population of 48,411 in 1901, showing an increase of 22% in the past decade. Hanthawaddy and Henzada were the two most densely populated districts in the province.
Hanthawaddy, as it was constituted in 1911, consisted of a vast plain stretching up from the sea between the To (or China Bakir) mouth of the Ayeyarwady River and the Pegu Yomas. Except the tract of land lying between the Pegu Yomas on the east and the Hlaing river, the country was intersected by numerous tidal creeks; many of which were navigable by large boats and some by steamers. The headquarters of the district was in Rangoon, which was also the sub-divisional headquarters. The second sub-division had its headquarters at Insein, where there were large railway works. Cultivation was almost wholly confined to rice, but there were many vegetable and fruit gardens.
Today, Hanthawaddy may be considered a district of the city of Bago.

Traveling to Myanmar? Watch this video to discover Myanmar's highlights!
Are you traveling to Myanmar for your next holiday? Are you still undecided on which countries to choose for your trip to South East Asia? If it is going to be your first time in Myanmar, do not miss these highlights!
The mostly Buddhist country of Myanmar is a mixture of hundreds of ethnic groups, ancient and colonial architecture and culture, and stunning landscapes. Myanmar is obsessed with drinking tea, and you will find thousands of teahouses sprawling throughout the country. Previously known as Burma during the British-era, Myanmar changed its name one year after a bloody uprising in 1988. Today, most of the country is safe to travel, except for a few areas that are closed to visitors.
Visitors come to Myanmar primarily for the archaeological site of Bagan, an ancient city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with temples from 11th to 13th century. Archaeologists have found over 2,200 temples in the vast 100-sq-km area, which is believed to have had over 10,000 temples in its heyday. Close to Bagan, Mount Popa makes for an excellent day-trip. Climb the 777 steps to the hilltop Buddhist temple for breathtaking views. Mrauk U is another great archaeological site in Myanmar, but since it is not as popular as Bagan, only a handful of people visit the place, and you are likely to have the place all for yourself.
At the foot of Mandalay Hill, lies the thriving Mandalay city with great markets and Buddhist, Hindu and Islamic monuments. Mandalay was bombed flat during WWII and much of what you see today has been rebuilt from ruins. Northeast from Mandalay, the historically rich town of Hsipaw will make it difficult for you to say goodbye, with its relaxed vibe and authentic trekking opportunities. It is easily reached from Mandalay by train, a ride that could probably be one of the world's most scenic train journeys.
The Inle Lake region, to the south of Mandalay, has been a tourist favourite for years now. A scenic boat ride on the vast lake through stilt villages and Buddhist temples is a must-do activity for nature lovers. Nearby, Kalaw with its relaxed atmosphere, offers an authentic hill station experience. It is an excellent location to unwind, explore colonial architecture or go on some amazing treks.
Myanmar's former capital Yangon (formerly Rangoon) is the country's biggest city and a major commercial hub. The city's skyline is characterized by British colonial and modern architecture, and Buddhist pagodas, the most notable of which is Shwedagon Paya. Around 80 km northeast of Yangon lies Bago, a historical city dotted with ruins and religious sites, and makes for a good day-trip from Yangon. You could stop overnight at Bago and continue onward to Mawlamyine, across the Gulf of Martaban, where you will feel as if time stopped and the place got stuck in the 20th century. Beaches and caves blend here with fading colonial architecture.
Even though Myanmar has had a tumultuous past, it is pretty safe for visitors now. It is a perfectly laid-back destination, with just enough things to see and do, which makes this country so appealing to the visitors.
Must visit places and experiences in Myanmar: Bagan, Inle Lake, Mandalay, Yangon, Mawlamyine, Mrauk U, Bago, Kalaw, Mount Popa

A Train Journey from Yangon to Mawlamyine, Myanmar
Edit: 1:47 it's actually the world's second-tallest seated Buddha statue in the world, after the one in Thailand. Though in Myanmar they still call it the world's largest! ¯_(ツ)_/¯
On the 19th of January 2020, we decided to do something new and try to take a train instead of hitchhiking. We left Myanmar's capital city Yangon to Mawlamyine, nearly 300 kilometers southeast around the Gulf of Martaban.

DISCOVERING MYANMAR • A journey through this mysterious country (ITA sub ENG)
Isolated by a military dictatorship for years, Myanmar is today one of the poorest and less developed countries in the world but also one of the most interesting with an ancient culture and a beautiful authenticity.
This is the story of my journey through this amazing country.
BURMA : Yangon Towntown 2010
Yangon is located in Lower Myanmar at the convergence of the Yangon and Bago Rivers about 19 miles (30 km) away from the Gulf of Martaban. Its standard time zone is UTC/GMT +6:30 hours.
MAP OF MYANMAR
hello my friends. this is a map of Myanmar. Myanmar is bordered in the northwest by the Chittagong Division of Bangladesh and the Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh states of India. Its north and northeast border is with the Tibet Autonomous Region and Yunnan for a Sino-Myanmar border total of 2,185 km. It is bounded by Laos and Thailand to the southeast. Myanmar has 1,930 km of contiguous coastline along the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea to the southwest and the south, which forms one quarter of its total perimeter.
In the north, the Hengduan Mountains form the border with China. Hkakabo Razi, located in Kachin State, at an elevation of 5,881 metres , is the highest point in Myanmar. Many mountain ranges, such as the Rakhine Yoma, the Bago Yoma, the Shan Hills and the Tenasserim Hills exist within Myanmar, all of which run north-to-south from the Himalayas. The mountain chains divide Myanmar's three river systems, which are the Irrawaddy, Salween , and the Sittaung rivers. The Irrawaddy River, Myanmar's longest river at nearly 2,170 kilometres , flows into the Gulf of Martaban. Fertile plains exist in the valleys between the mountain chains. The majority of Myanmar's population lives in the Irrawaddy valley, which is situated between the Rakhine Yoma and the Shan Plateau. thats all. please comment and subscribe for the best maps. goodbye.

FROM BURMA TO THE RIVER KWAI - English • Great Railways
Producer NICK LERA explores the infamous ‘Death Railway’ built by the Japanese during the Second World War to provide overland access to Burma in support of their ill-fated advance on India. In Thailand we travel by steam train across the creaking wooden trestles beside the Kwai River, and visit the Hellfire Pass where thousands of Allied prisoners and Asian conscripts died in forced labour conditions hacking the line through solid rock. In present-day Myanmar we travel behind classic British steam locomotives from Rangoon towards the Thai border, pausing at the Sittang river where the British lost the bridge to the Japanese in 1942. The exotic settings belie the trauma of their recent history. Filmed in 1999 before steam power was discontinued.
