A Walk Through Marshalltown, Iowa: A Charming Midwestern City
Marshalltown, Iowa was founded in 1851 by Henry Anson, a pioneer from Michigan. He was drawn to the area by its fertile soil and abundant water resources. Anson built a log cabin on a high point between the Iowa River and Linn Creek, and soon other settlers began to arrive. The town was originally named Marshall, but the name was changed to Marshalltown in 1862 to avoid confusion with another town in Iowa.

In the early days of automobile travel, this road was a segment of the Official Transcontinental Route.
Named the Lincoln Highway, the route was completed through Iowa in 1913.

Winterset is a city in and the county seat of Madison County, Iowa. Winterset was platted during a cool spell in the summer of 1849. The name was originally to be Summerset, but the unseasonable coldness made the commissioners reverse this to Winterset. It is the birthplace of actor John Wayne.
