How big can volcanic lava flows be? We pull off the road to follow the signs to a natural lava bridge that has been carved out by a fast moving river. This a small part of our road trip across Southern Africa. A trip from Tanzania and the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic off the coast of Namibia.

Kiwira Volcanic Bridge Video Details
We zigzagged our way along a fast moving river until we spotted the lava bridge in the distance. Ben volunteered to cross it to give me perspective. It turned out to be a huge chunk of lava. After a few snaps we headed back to the main road.
Near the boarder we stopped for supplies and then an overland expedition truck pulled up behind us. Groups of strangers spend up to 6-weeks travelling between Nairobi and Cape Town crammed in the back of these trucks. Our Land Cruiser for two seems way more comfortable now.
But before we crossed into Malawi we first needed to perform the ritual money exchange. Let the haggling begin. You never win in these deals. The best you can hope for is to get rid of your money and get the next country’s money without suffering a major loss or rip-off.

KAPOROGWE WATERFALLS”Adventure! Discover the Hidden Gem of Tanzania
The waterfalls are 25 metres high and the waters are sourced from the Kala River, a tributary of the Kiwira River.
Kapologwe Falls is a great scenic attraction found in Isuba village, about 15 km from Tukuyu town. There is a cave that allows access for visitors to enjoy the view of these majestic falls from inside, adding to the falls’ already aesthetic appeal. The waterfalls are about 30 metres high and the waters are sourced from the Kala River, a tributary of the Kiwira River
Kapologwe waterfalls were originally known as Kala falls. However, local residents decided to change the name after a young boy named Kapologwe fell from the cliff-top into the pool 35 meters below. Despite the height of the falls and suffering somw bruises, Kapologwe miraculously survived. Since then the falls started to be addressed by his name
To further add to your adventure, apart from sightseeing the falls from afar, you can carefully descend the falls, enter tunnels hidden behind the curtain of water falling down in front of you, and then descend further down and swim in the pool below
Behind the falls, there is a natural cave and a concrete wall that the Germans are believed to have used as a fort or a hideout during the First World War. Stone tools such as axes and knives were also found nearby, making the region around the falls a prehistoric site as well

After about a 45 minuite hike in on the Poroto Ridge we come a clearing in the forrest where the view is absolutely stunning. A further 2 hour hike takes you to the waters edge.
